I am not so sure how do you calculate. I calculate like this, 26/hr times 7 hr a day, NY prebs dont pay for the 1hr lunch time, so after times 7hr, it is 182 a day, and times 5 days a week, it would be $910, and 52 weeks a year, so times 52, it is 47320, so mostly it is 48K.

Yes,lol, that is true. 22 is the acutal number. but the exact acutal number is, for me, I guess they will tax me 30%, i am single, nothing, so i guess income tax is 30%, for me, sign, the exact acutal number is 22 times 70% is 15.4 hahah,so bad. So r u working in hospital in long island now? do u know what private hospital pays more? I had a classmate is working in long island private hospital now, he is making 55K, but i forget what hospital he mention.

I am going back to school for billing because I just did not want to feed into the loop that once you start working for rotten, if you want to call it pay, you are stuck in that field. Once you work you have no hours to go back to school and the bills have to be paid so you can't stop working and any classes you take can no longer transfer because you've been out of classes for years. You can't get a different type of job either because the only thing you have on your resume is that crazy thing. No other job uses lab tech skills. Jobs for lab tech are so limited and require 2 years experience. Now they want you to have a BA in medical technology to work. I had a BA in Biology when I took the license. There is always one more reason I can't be hired. So, that was it for me. I'm turning to billing.

Medical Billing personnel make less than MLTs, and push papers all day.

If you want to go to school so you can be paid $14/hr to file claims with insurance companies all day, be my guest.

Certified coding specialists make 18$ an hour and only 37 1/2 hours per week. MLTs make 30,000$/yr and you have to work 40 hrs. per week. It is actually the MLTs who earn 14$/hour. You should not lie.

Try another job field. A license or certification does not replace the experience. It is an employer's security that you won't screw up. In this field they simply won't give a chance to new people. They want to keep the same people even after they quit or die. When they interview they tell you,"Boy, do I miss the person who just left. See I have her picture on a shrine." Or go to another state. The cost of living is cheaper and they can't wait to get their hands on you.

i agree with you, the reason average age of MT is high, is they only hire " experienced" MT. Young MT will never have chance to have their experience.

Actually, I think a lot of labs want new grads. I have not received job offers in this city because I have too much experience and they don't want to pay me the salary. Try brushing up on your resume and see if you can make it stand out just a little more. Also try using a recruiter (local not national) if you haven't already. It costs you nothing and they can possibly help to get you an interview.

The problem is not too much experience. They don't want to hire a Mr. Know It All, someone who does not take the authority well. If you have so much experience why didn't you stay with the people who trained you? Whether you're old, young, experienced, inexperienced, licensed, unlicensed, nice, mean, fat, short, bald or green with orange polka dots this field does NOT want to pay you.

I dont know how to say! all you guys said is true and reality, but just part of it, and ur guys' reality experience really scare new graduate people like me:"difficult to find a job in MT field." LOL, however, there is another part of postive reality is very easy to find a job in MT field since it is shortage now, I had several classmates(more than 10 already that i know) got a job in nyc and long island already and good paid too. I am going to find opportunitiy after i pass ASCP soon. So, Hey, be positive, except those negative reality, we still have a a lot of positive reality here. But, anyway, LOl, u guys still scare me that I cannot got a job after i pass ASCP, classmate is classmate, they find a job donest mean i can. But hey, be positive, a good person, act like strong candiate, i believe they will hire u and paid u. one of my classmate can make up to 60K now evening shift, and he is still dont pass ASCP yet and got a limit now. So, this field is not negative, but only negative people here!

60,000$/year is not that great for night shift. If you work that graveyard shift you should be getting night differential, say an extra 10%. So, 60,000$/yr/52 weeks per year=1153.84$/week. 1153.84$/40 hours per week=28.846$ per hour. This 28.84$/hour is with night differential. Without night differential that is 28.84$-10%(28.84)=26$/hour. What is so great about that? One also must ask is overtime included in this 60,000$/year. If so, then the base hourly rate is even lower.
But, why don't you find where your classmates work and get a job there? And let us know where these jobs are too. I'm not seeing this shortage. I don't see any jobs being advertised in the newspaper or on the internet for this field in nyc. Any openings I've seen have been per diem and the graveyard shift, loved by everyone.

My lab just hired an 11-7/12-8 Mon.-Fri. The jobs are out there. 50K a year seems to be the going rate for new grads in NYC. How can overtime be included in the salary since you have no idea how many hours of overtime you will be working in any given year? Or do you mean differential and not overtime?

You mentioned you "could" get $60,000. Do you mean "could" or "will".If you are doing 11pm-7AM or12AM-8AM you need to be making NIGHT DIFFERENTIAL. That is the graveyard shift. You should be getting at least base +10% for graveyard. It is possible the $60,000 is with overtime. I inquired about an MT job and the woman told me 52,000 a year working 10:00-6:30PM (day). So if there were night shift differential for that position it would be 52000$+ +5,200= 57,200$.

NYC does NOT pay more than 50,000/year. I inquired about a job out on Long Island and they told me over the phone that the technologist job in Hematology is 52000/year AND they have the nerve to want supervisory experience. I looked at a NYC Civil Service job site at a chemist job for lab technologist and they said minimum of $40000=REALLY SUCKS and they want two years of experience. Having the state license is the minimum passing score to apply for the job. Your score increases with experience. Many insurance jobs get $40000/year only working 37 1/2 hours per week. Many government jobs earn $50000/year doing less and working 37 1/2 hours. The fact that you'd expect NYC to pay more because of the high cost of living and they don't pay it speaks volumes about the poor, pitiful pay for these jobs.

yes james, i agree, that kind of pay is unbelievably low for one of the most expensive places to live in the US. i recently moved here to accept a position in the city as a technologist and was very disappointed at the starting salary..i could have stayed where i was and start at that rate with a lower cost of living. since i just signed a lease i have to stay put for at least one year, but i'm already looking into states out of the northeast..i've had it with the high cost of living and relatively low pay.

50K a year in NYC is a joke, did you try Preby on West Side Highway?

I thought they paid pretty well, and the annual increase was suppose to be pretty good.

Only thing about living in NYC is that they will tax you to death, especially the NYC tax along with state and federal.

Entry level Brooklyn (Maimo, Interferon, Lutheran, Methodist) hospitals pay in the 26-30/hr range. Hospitals in the city pay 30+. Staten Island, theres only two hospitals anyway, pay 24-26/hr.

Melrose,
If you are 90K in debt I don't think that moving to California, which I believe is a very expensive place to live. Someone in this forum wrote that he gets the same pay in NY that he did in Kentucky. In NY the cost of living is higher though. So the money does not go as far. If you must move, move to a city with a low cost of living and maybe cheap housing. If you buy a house maybe you can rent it to someone else. Where did this 90K come from??? Classes don't cost that much.

A few of the 1199 hospitals closed: St. Vincent's, Saint Mary's, St. John's. This made 1199 relocate their workers, so finding a job in one of those hospitals is tough and you need to be a member of their union for them to consider trying to help you.
As for 60,000$/yr, that is working 40 hours/week +2 1/2 / week lunches. Nurses only work 37 1/2 hours/week + 2 1/2 hours/week lunch and get the same pay. If you are a lab tech you have to work more hours to get the same pay as a nurse who has 2 years of school.
Go sell cars. You can earn 100,000$/year. Even waiters earn more per hour than lab tech.

sorry but 3 hours does not consitute the patient care and stress nurses go through, and that's very bogus. Most nurses do very long shifts, they can't exactly leave when the clock hits the 8th hour, they do alot of overtime hence they make more money that way per year as opposed to just their base salary. Everyone can make a little more money if they put in more hours, it's just how it is. They also do 12 hour shift/3 days, which is very very dreadful compared to a standard 8 hour/5 days.

as i know, it dosnt matter how many college credits or even you have a master degree, you still could not get the license. because you have to take the medical tech program in order to get the license.

You need a BS to get Medical technologist licensure. In NY it has to be in Medical technology so you're looking at 125 credits in a regular college. Now, maybe one of those cheekie non-traditional colleges can do better for you. Especially if you're on unemployment benefits you can get tuition reimbursement or free tuition from them. Within the traditional college you would also take the med tech. courses.
Do yourself a favor though. Don't go into lab technologist. Go into nursing. There is no demand for lab techs. It is hard to get in with no experience. The pay is no good. The hours SUCK! They are mean to you also. All they care about is the RNs. Go for nursing!
