I am a registered medical technologist in the Philippines. I am currently visiting the US. I am much interested in obtaining a medical technologist license in California. What do I need to do? Please help me.

It's a joke. Anyone who uses it might be arrested or laughed out of the building. Seems years ago someone printed an advertisement with their secretary's Social Security number on the ad and the woman had to get a new one because so many people saw the ad and started using it (40,000 of them). It is now an invalid number and the Social Security folks know it is invalid.

You don't need to get the board exams sa pinas! pls check out this website www.ascp.org/international. i think all you need to do is to have your transcripts evaluated by a certifying agency here in the states such as WES.If you're planning to work in California, you need to take ASCP international...pero if not naman I think AMT will do kase di pa tayo pwede kumuha ng ASCP. At least amg AMT recognized din sa ibang states..pero not in California. I've been here in Georgia for 10 months now...and still reviewing for the exams! pls e-mail me if you have some more questions...books you can refer on the ascp website! Good luck! Hello! And hi Maria! I also came from Cebu and obtained my BSMT there (VC). Actually, it depends on the hospital that you want to apply. Some would prefer ASCP certified. Others, ASCP or equivalent registry-which is AMT or NCA. I'm still trying to rview for my AMT but planning to take the ASCP as well. Keep in touch.

Hi there! Just visit the amt website (www.amt1.com) and there you can find under the reference materials the reviewer to be used and how to order it online. It's by Cuveillo (2 volumes). This is what most of my friends used who also took the AMT. Take care!

Thank you for the info. So you mean to say I can take the ASCP even if I acquired my bachelor's degree in th Phil? It just confused me since a friend told me that I should take the ASCPi since I'm a foreign graduate.

The type of certification you need will depend on the state where you want to work. Each state have their own requirements., i.e. California only recognizes ASCP and AAB certifications.

If you are in the Philippines, there is a Medical Technologists organization called PAMET. They are very active in the field of MT and have contacts with the PAMET USA organization. Since they are in Manila, they may be able to provide you with more guidance.

Hi Jay,Im Glenn.Do you still remember me? Your friend in MCU.Im a registered medtech in the Philippines but right now Im staying here in Los Angeles, CA.About your question, if you want to work here in California you have to take ASCPi or AAB.

AAB is also a certifying organization just like ASCP.They are both recognized by California.But as far as Im concerned,there's no AAB in the Philippines yet.You can take the ASCPi and it is also being recognized by the state of California.You said that you already passed AMT.Why dont you look for other states like Iowa and Florida.I think they are accepting AMT.

Hi Julie! I bought mine online at AMAZON.COM. ALL of these books are worth like $200.00 (rough estimate only for I dont remember anymore the EXACT prices of these books). The most expensive is the Koneman's. other alternative is you buy them USED, in that way, you'll not pay that much.

Hi. I didn't use any reviewer when I took the AMT exam. Madali lang naman yung exam eh, mas mahirap di hamak yung sa PRC. I just used my college notes. Maraming nagsasabi na mahirap daw yung ASCP, pero I know someone who failed the PRC exam but passed the ASCP here!

visit the DOH website in florida and click on medical quality assurance. they have a list of requirements there. if i can remember correctly, you need to pass a copy of your SS#, TOR, license verification from ASCP, medical errors and HIV/AIDS courses (which you can get online thru anderson continuing education website), download the application form (attach a list of duties and/or tests you performed during your current/previous employment and have this signed by the lab manager), and of course, pay the fee of $205?? (not sure!) hope this helps...

Florida no longer offers their own exam, you simply need to take a qualifying exam (I took the AAB exam because it is recognized in all states that require a license). But be aware that it can take several weeks for them to verify that you met all of Florida's qualifications for getting a license. Also, if you have a BS it will make the process much easier otherwise you have to prove from your various employers that you have the minimal experience needed. We also have a blood banking specialist license to which you will need if you work for a blood bank and not license in all areas.... if I remember right criminal history can possible keep you from obtaining a license.

what state do you plan to work for?If you plan to work in california or new york (you also have to have a newyork lisence by DOH), better finish your ascp exam because they usually ask for it. You have the advantage of being in the US if a potential employer calls you for an interview however remember that the H1B filing starts on April 1, so you should have a willing employer/sponsor before filing starts so that all your documents will be ready by then. Apply online to as many hospitals as you can and better if you can set up an interview date before April so that you will have ample time for processing your papers.
