Are you in east coast? I thought getting a job there as a CLS is much easier there as long as you have your ASCP certificate. I dont know which state youre applying to but in some state, you need to have your ASCP certificate converted to a state cls license, for example, mine i need to apply for the CA CLS license. I am a newly licensed here in California. I just got my CA license last month and hopefully, I will get a job soon, because here, they require a local experience which I dont have because I just came here in the US last year.

Are you from the Phils? Try those reference labs, they'll take you in .Lab corp and quest has a lot of openings for CLS I.

Hi, everyone. I was hoping someone here could help me out clear some questions I have about ASCP. I am a BS Med Tech graduate from Philippines but that was back in 2002 and I never took board exams there in Philippines. I went to medical school but now am thinking of just going back to MT field. I emailed ASCP about this but I'm not sure if they really read my question carefully because they just emailed me the link to certification exam. Some say if you graduated outside US take AMT not ASCP. Here in Minnesota, I believe hospitals take ASCP certified MTs so I don't think AMT certification will help me. Anyone familiar with my situation? Do I go through the same process as everyone else who graduated outside US even though I graduated a long time ago? Does it make any difference if I am already a US resident? Help me out please. Thanks in advance.

hi, confused!

so let me get this right: what you want to do now is work as a med tech/clin lab scientist(for some states) here in the states, right?

most states these days would require that you have an MT state license to be able to work as one. there are some states that only require you to be CERTIFIED. certification and licensing are two different things.

u get an MT certification when you pass any of the certifying orgs out there, be it AABB, AMT, or ASCPi. as of late, hospitals and non hospital laboratories have favored an ASCP certification over the others. ASCP has now become the standard certifying org. the process of getting certified is unique for every certifying org out there. i am only familiar with ASCP's process, having personally undergone through it(btw i was also a US resident at the time of my application). the steps are on the ascp site. if i remember correctly, you only need the ff to successfully apply for the ASCPi(since you graduated in the phils, you will be taking the ASCPinternational certifying exam) exam:

1. an evaluated TOR...

...cont.

1. an evaluated TOR. ascp will want to have your credentials assessed by a US-accredited evaluating agency (AACRAO in this case, the link is on the ascp website). AACRAO will require you to have ur school registrar send them directly a sealed copy of your MT TOR(this may take some time, depending on how prompt ur registrar is. in my case, i had a relative pick up my sealed TOR from my school and my relative fed-exed it to AACRAO, just to speed things up. note that the sender's address must be the school's). simultaneously, you have to have AACRAO send ASCP an extra copy of the evaluated transcript.

....

i think thats about it. while waiting for AACRAO to evaluate ur transcripts(takes about 2weeks-1month), apply meanwhile for the ASCPi certification exam through ROUTE 1. (since u don't have a PRC license, etc.).

nxt part would be waiting to get the eligibility letter from ASCP. depending on how fast AACRAO evaluates ur transcripts and sends them to ASCP, this part shouldnt take so long. when you get notified about being eligible to take the exam, you can then schedule your ASCPi exam anytime within the next 3 months.

NOW the state LICENSURE part.

as i mentioned earlier, some states would require that you have a state license on top of your certification. and i just checked out lab openings in minnesota, and apparently they only need the certification! lucky you! (some labs there even hire you sans the ascp certificate, as long as you can get certified within 6 months of ur hire date! that's a pretty sweet deal).

but just for information's sake(in case anyone who happens to be in a state that requires a state MT license has the same querries), state licensure application will vary from state to state. ie, here in california, we apply to Laboratory Field Sciences(CA LFS) for a CLS(clinical laboratory scientist--what MTs are called here) license= they require us to send them a copy of our successful ASCPi passing, yet another sealed TOR mailed directly from our school, another copy of an AACRAO-evaluated TOR, and $200. then after a long and tedious wait of 3-6months, and after being deemed eligible to be a CA CLS, we take this 10-item online quiz on california CLS laws, and when we pass, voila, we have a CLS license.

and as to your being a green card holder, yes having an SSN is an advantage when you apply for MT jobs.

and graduating in 2002 wouldnt be a factor at all; as long as you have completed MT internship, you should be good to take the ASCPi exam.

best of luck to you! hope i did not confuse you more.

should you have more questions, feel free to email me at adel_aloba@yahoo.com
i'd be happy to help

Wow! Thanks so much, Adel! Yes this helped a lot. I did do internship but again that was back in Philippines. Our curriculum in UST includes internship. Would that be enough? If if it is, wow sounds like it's very doable. Greatly appreciate your help. I will definitely contact you if I have more questions. You seem like you really know this inside out. :)

I'll work on that transcript evaluation process... Thanks!

yes your philippine internship should be fine(i did mine back home as well, and they had no questions about it), as long as your TOR indicates your internship rotations. otherwise i think you can ask your registrar to include a certificate of internship/list of your internship rotations, just to be thorough about it... again the ascp site is the best go-to for the exact details, they might have changed some stuff in the last couple of years :D

no worries at all!:) im glad to have helped in some way. btw, our stories are almost similar, i too went to med school, i just didnt finish it haha :D

Good for you.. That is a good start. I suggest you work in a large hospital that way you will get a good training and experience does make a big difference if you want to come to US then take the ASCPi and pass the test. If you are gonna spend some $ might as well make the most out of it ASCP is recognized everywhere. You want to take the international because you are educated outside US and no US experience just yet. The regular ASCP requires five years US working experience. Then work on getting VISA screen once you have it thats the only time you could start applying for a job. Its a very long process but it is so worth it.
Good Luck

Just got my California CLS license couple months ago, never had to go through ACCRAO I was told by their supervisor that if you graduated from the PHils then you dont need evaluation. Dont waste your $200 plus for nothing.

is that true? well like i said, i did all that jazz a couple of years back. does the AACRAO bypass hold true for ASCPi exam application as well? i checked their new website just now; and exam eligibility requires you to have it evaluated still by AACRAO UNLESS you already have taken the phil boards and have in ur possession a PRC no. in both my and confused from minnesota's case, we didnt get to take the phil boards, so TOR evaluation by AACRAO was mandatory for me then, and will be needed for her coming application.

ok, ok, I have a question for CLS/MT's that are in the field. I've posted maybe twice (not on this thread) but on the same topic of CLS/MT here on indeed. I'm in so cal,CA and I have a criminal conviction from LA county-Torrance Superior Court Branch. I was convicted of misdemeanor domestic battery (aka domestic violence), in which, I served 9 days in County Jail and the disposition was a 1 year battery course (I completed that already) and a 3 year unsupervised aka summary probation. Now this was June 2010. I figure I do 2.5 years of CC @ my local JC starting this upcoming semester, spring 2012. Now 2.5 years, in terms of semesters, would place me to transfer to LLU spring of 2014 for fall entry of 2014. Now June 2013 I would be done with my probation and eligble for expundgement, as this conviction was my first (and last) offense. Furthermore, if I transfered into the program Fall of 2014 that would be an anticipated grad. date of Spring 2016. My question is, since my offense would be 6 years old from the date of conviction to grad. date/license exam and I would be off probation for 3 years from termination of probation to grad. date/exam date, including expundgement, would both boards (either CA-CLS/MT and national ASCP) look in disfavor of my past? I was wondering since I will show proof of rehabilitation and an effort to have my record expundge (although I know I might have to state on the application ANY conviction I have had on paper),will the boards take that into consideration? I know they will conduct a THOROUGH investagation and it MAY take several weeks or even months, but I know that honesty is the best policy, so I will disclose all info as needed. I would be sad and mad in a way if they reject me and didn't give me my license knowing that I've done all that hard work. I assume since time will have elapsed since the conviction (6 years) and probation (3 years)they would honor that. Can anyone comment? Thanks in advance..
