1. Day shift people never quite. You would have to wait and wait and wait until someone dies, retires, or gets fired to land a day shift job. Night shift is not tough. You do have to train your body for it. The first month will be the hardest. Decide on if you will sleep right after work (7am until the afternoon) or before work (12pm until 1hr before work). I recommend taking your daily shower as soon as you get home. That way when you oversleep you can roll right on out of bed and head out the door. |

I, along with many of my classmates, got day shift jobs immediately upon graduation. it just depends on the area i guess. |

You should come to Texas. We will hire you with no problems as an MLT. My bro is an Mlt. Also the pay is low here for MT's starting out it is almost the same as MLT pay. It is easy to find a day job as an MLT in Texas, just do an Indeed job search for Houston,Tx and you will see. I think that the starting salary ( based on knowing people that are currently working) is anywhere from 16-19/hr as an MLT and that is without shift diff. Working the night shift you would get paid more ( about 1.50 to 2 more). I am a student so I cannot say but this is what people I know are telling me. |

Thanks I made this observation to an MT and they thought I was nuts. I don't understand either why MLT's are smart enough to work off shifts and weekends with little or no supervision, but day shift techs have to have a BS either in Med Tech or some life science, MLT's need not apply. It does depend on shortage of MT's, some areas have more MT's than others. I have been doing this for 40 years. Keep looking in other areas, Dr's offices, independent labs other than hospitals. They have a lot to offer like less drama and more patient ciontact, more opportunities to see all aspects of the lab because of lower niumber of employees |

My hospital keeps day shift filled with mostly veteran MTs. That's when the inpatient population is tested, where we encounter most of our unusual results (they're the sickest). I'm one of the few MTs on second shift, as I work with mostly MLTs handling routine outpatient testing. Night shift is staffed by anyone with a pulse...the MTs and MLTs who volunteer for that shift get special treatment (very flexible hours and fewer weekends/holidays). |

Any idea, what's the job market in Chicago for MT's?..well, kinda decided to move there, for career change and be closer to my family as well. I work in a critical access small hospital here in Oklahoma as generalist , night shift position for 5 yrs now. I am AMT and ASCP certified.
