i'm quite willing to relocate. I did submit an application to a hospital in Texas where a lot of my college friends are working. I just feel bad for my husband because he would have to relocate with me or I would have to leave him for a while. Another hang up I have is that I haven't taken the ASCPi certification exam yet because some employers here allow you to take it within a year of employment and I want to have some clinical experience first before I take it.

How long does it usually take to get a response when you send an application? How long did it take you to get a job here?

exactly right! I live in a really small town here in Alabama and I have sent my applications to all the hospitals in the area and none of them were on this website hehe I just go to this website to look for BS jobs hehe

@ecmaddox: did you pud your MD education in your credentials? If so, maybe you should just keep it to yourself. Maybe because you're an MD, employers will be hesitant to hire you because they feel you are overqualified. I have two colleagues who were MD also back in PI but they did not put it in there credentials. Also, you can try recruiters, most recruiters here in the US don't charge anything unlike back home. Wish you luck in you job hunting. Jobs are available and we H1b holders are not taking those jobs from you.

can you tell me what recruiters?

i really don't know what to believe right now.. i didn't want to omit anything because I might come out as being dishonest. i'm just putting in applications for anything and everything I am qualified for so hopefully something, anything will come up! i got a job interview though for a BS job paying minimum wage and it's a fun job but I don't know if i'm gonna take it coz it's a seasonal thing and the place is 50 miles from where i'm at.

hello guys! need advise. i'm a med tech graduate from the phils 10 years ago. i didnt work as a med tech for some reasons but now wants to try a career as a medical technologist/CLS with lots of issues wih the application process.

1) am i eligible to take AMT or ASCPi even if i've graduated 10 yrs ago?
2) do i need lab/clinical experience in US? i only have internship as my lab experience.

i'm trying to go through ASCPi online (using route 1. actually tried all routes) but i dont know what to put/choose in the Accredited Program Information. is the work experience they're asking should be clinical lab experience? my credentials were evaluated and they're ok.

with AMT application, on part V. RECOMMENDATION FOR CERIFICATION, it is stated that if i have graduated from healthcare training program more than 3 yrs ago, this part should be completed. should this be a lab-related experience? please advise! thanks!

need advise. thanks! goodluck to all who will be taking the exam!

I need an employer who can sponsor an H1B visa. I don't have an agent and right now I am looking for an agent to help me out with my employment. I am ASCPi certified and have years of experience as a medtech. Thank you and hope an agent in here can help?

I am also a Filipina and currently taking an MLT program here in NC and hopefully to graduate by May 2011 after my clinical rotation at VA. Kahit sa lugar namin, it is hard to find a job in clinical lab, mostly they prefer MT's. I think, bigger cities have more job opening for MLT/MT here in NC particularly in reference lab. I am applying for CLS in Univ of Cincinnati this coming summer 2011. I am also applying at Winston Salen State University, and they told me that I would be accepted after I graduate but I am still confused because my instructor prefer the Univ of Cincinnati.

Damnbuilder in Los Angeles, California said: Im afraid not. When you pass your ASCPi. California state will require you to go through steps to be State Licensed. California only allows the ASCPi to be licensure exam for their state, if you pass it you dont automatically be state licensed coz you need to go through steps and part of that is requiring a social security number. Since you plan to come here as a tourist, you are not eligible to have one. You need to find an employer to file you an h-1b visa which in cali is a slim chance. Good luck.

I agree with damnbuilder, u need SS number to apply registration at LFS California for CA CLS licensed, if u want to work in US try other states that do not require state license.. hospitals and ref labs will not sponsor working visa this time..

Hi. I am a resident of Canada, registered and licensed to work as a Medtech here but finding it difficult to look for job because they usually prefer Technologists with Canadian experience or students who have studied here. Out of frustration, I took ASCPi and luckily passed the exams. Does anybody know what visa is needed for a Canadian resident or Canadian citizen to work in the US? Do I still need to undergo the H1B visa process? Please advice. Thanks.

Yes passiondrifter. H1B visa is your permit to work in US (non-resident/immigrant of US) and you must need an employer to petition or sponsor you. If they are interested on hiring you, they take care the filing of the visa. Depending on your employer they might finance everything, or you get to share or the worst is u pay everything. If you have an agency u usually undergo a placement program. Well it all depends on what you are signing in your contract (just giving u an idea). Visa screen (CGFNS/ICHP) and an English test (prob u might have them both already) will also be part of the process. It's good that you have a NCA accredited certification for MT (ur ASCPi) but most states will require you to have a state license. U can check this site www.lablicense.com., click the state licenses, there will be information there on acquiring a license from different states. You are close to NY, check the "grandparenting program", you might be qualified for getting a state license without taking exam (i bet you will be qualified). Check this site and look for the license options. www.op.nysed.gov...U know that you can convert ur ASCPi certification to California license for MT right,if no check the ASCP website.

Thanks so much for your reply CLS@NYS, it's very helpful. One more question if you don't mind-- How's employment opportunities for Medical Technologists in the US these days? Is it also difficult to look for a job especially in my case living outside of US? I wish to move to California but I read some comments that they are freeze hiring.

Hey bud don't be discouraged about the talks about the hire freezing, you are not even suppose to be worrying about this. Just focus on what you want, be hired and get the chance in moving here. Keep in mind there is gonna be work for you it's just a matter of time (if it's for u, it's for u), effort (be resourceful, ur doin it right now, be patience and optimistic), strategies (u can increase ur chances, broaden ur options) and meeting their requirements(yes u can find a way to work on these). Those info about the hiring freeze will do you no good, ignore it, but there is gonna be frustration, it's part of the process (not everyone has the same luck) but never lose ur spirit, it's all about looking and looking and not stopping until you find an employer or they find u. Remember, lab is one of the areas where skills are not easy to find and it generates revenue for the company so strategically they will continue hire people in this department, they will hire whatever the financial status of the institution or the economic situation once the department calls for it.

Well I'm thinking I could be probably of help more BUT I guess you have not fully decided yet what state license you'll be getting (CA?). May I know beside from the ASCPi and Canadian license, what credentials/ certification u have now?How about experience? Why not consider volunteering from those Canadian lab or hosp (look for non-profit organization, they will pretty much consider ur application)and show them ur potentials, they might consider hiring you instead and the
experience will favor u alot.

Hi CLS@NYS. Thanks for encouraging me. I am fully decided on getting work in California coz my relatives are there. I only have the ASCPi and Canadian license. The very latest experince I have as a Technologist was in 2007 in Haematology but not that good experience either bec somebody else does the manual procedures (like morphology and stuff) which is a skill to learn in that area. After that, I just mostly worked as a technician. So, I can't say I really have a good experience though I have all the licenses. Hospitals accept volunteers here in Canada but they will be the one to assign which area you should be put in which is not usually the lab bec there are students helping out already. Anyway, I will heed you advice and just continue looking for opportunities. Thanks again.

Well my advice is while you keep on looking for a job in Canada (because you have their requirements anyway except you are lacking on the experience part and as you said before, they prefer canadian experience, they kind of profiling) work "NOW" on your English test (IELTS) then apply for the CGFNS (Visa Screen), and while waiting for this to be processed deal with your concerns on the technical skills of the prof(like diff and morph) because of the limited experience u have right? Check for Lab Training Org that offer virtual, face to face or hands on education activites. Apply for programs (like 6 months or so for training) that prepare u as a generalist tech esp those areas u think you are lacking or not comfortable of doin at all or check some school or universities that you can apply for internship (they'll just prob evaluates ur edu/creds). And just what I've said before just try looking for non profit org that may put u in the lab for volunteering (there might be a company out there) so just to get the experience.Unfortunately u gonna be using alot of ur resources but still explore ur options,u know there is gonna be competition out there,so start doin something 2day.

You need SS number for California CLS license...you can get that ss number if you are legal immigrant/US citizens, try first other States that does not require license, only certificates(AAB,AMT,ASCP). Hospitals/labs in California, do not sponsor CLS/MT this time..good luck.

my fellow Filipinos keep on believing and reaching for our dreams! For those of you who want to be license in the state of California, here is the complete detail of my CLS application:
8/20/2010-filed online application for ASCPi exam paid $200 using credit card (route 1). Only your PRC number is needed. I prepared for 3 mos. using books of Hubbard, Polansky, Cuviellos, and LabCE,
11/30/2010- took the exam in Pearsonvue Makati, Phil and successfully passed.
We migrated here on 1/2011. I waited 3 weeks for my Social Security Number
1/20/2011-applied for CLS license thru CDPH website and paid $203 using credit card
1/24/2011-received attestation page and mailed it back to CDPH
2/1/2011-requested my school registrar to forward my OTR and hours of clinical rotation/internship to CDPH
2/14/2011-Requested ASCP-BOR to directly forward my satisfactory rating to CDPH
3/11/2011-received the qualification letter for the online quiz and took it at 10pm the same day. It was 10 question for an hour very easy quiz., just print the 6 pages tutorial California Lab. laws. 7 out of 10 is the passing score.
4/27/2011- I saw my license detail in the verification window of CDPH website
5/2/2011-received the copy of my license (nakaprint sa hard bound 1/2 bond paper hehe)
Hope this helps..Thanks and Good Luck to all of us!

I don't want to deal with the stress of being a doctor anymore!

@ Ivy in Hampton and Jek in Charlotte;
I don't think finding a job as an MT is difficult. if you have the license, experience and legal authorization to work in the US you must have a job. Maybe you should work harder in your job search, prepare a very good resume (try the book KNOCK 'EM DEAD), don't be choosy, I mean applying in a suburb area is fine for a start, small lab. is fine too.
The competition is very stiff, yes it is, but hey we Filipinos are very competitive!
when I got my license on April 27, I started applying right away ( I did it at night when everybody is sleeping so I can concentrate bcoz some applications require 5 pages Q&A), at least 20 job postings in the net, I looked at primarily in indeed.com, simplyhired and craigslist, and on May 6 I got my first interview in a Hospital Lab. here in cali and luckily got the job offer afterwards.
Don't lose hope..believe in yourself.. be positive..you can do it!
Goodluck!
:)

Hi! I'm from the Philippines, but currently reside here in the US. I graduated BSMT just this year. I've just applied and has already paid online for the ASCPi exam 5 days ago. I am now lost as to what to do next.

Do I really need my transcript to get evaluated by an agency? I only sent a notarized copy of my transcript to this email address. ascpinternational@ascp.org 'coz it says here www.ascp.org/pdf/VerifyEducationPhilippines.aspx that I could just do that instead.

Also, do I still need to submit a reference form(the one where the number of laboratory training hours is indicated)? if it is already indicated in the transcript that I have completed a year of laboratory internship? Although I do have a certificate of internship with the hours indicated there which I also sent via email to that address. This was signed by our internship coordinator, department chair, and our dean. I'm actually worried for this one 'cause it would be difficult for me to obtain a letter of authenticity and have it signed by someone in the philippines while I am here. So, I'm wondering if what I sent is already enough.

Could I just send everything via email or will I need to send them a hard copy of the documents using the form with a barcode they gave me after I paid online. Thanks for any help you can give me in my application. I'm really lost as to do what to do next.

Umm, does passing the ascpi mean that I can already work here in the USA? If not, what do I need to have to have a work here?

Thank you so much for any info you can give me.
