I have been a medical transcriptionst for 27 years and not a day goes by that I don't check one of my Stedman books or the Internet for help, or call one of my MT buddies when I am really stuck. I would be terrified to try to get a job with only a home-study course under my belt. When I worked in the hospital I had my co-workers to depend on in the beginning and after a while (many years) I was an old-timer and everybody asked me. I guess what I am saying is that you are really going to have to beat the pavement to find a job. I know you have probably spent a lot of money on your course but I think it would be extremely hard to start out working at home without the backup of other MTs. Also, just wanted to say if you do get a job do not ever work where you will be having dictators with foreign accents. That is the worst scenario I can imagine. I refuse to do foreign dictators--too much frustration and you can't make any money cuz your nose is always in the books trying to figure out what they are saying. Good luck. I am going to retire in a month and I wish I could give you all my knowledge and experience. |

How do you get into the hospital field? I would be willing to work at a hospital in the beginning. I just graduated as well from a tech school and took a course in medical transcribing. The hospitals won't even hire you without 2 years' experience under your belt. I am at wits end trying to figure out how to get a job doing this. patscrabeck@hotmail.com in Goodyear, Arizona said: I have been a medical transcriptionst for 27 years and not a day goes by that I don't check one of my Stedman books or the Internet for help, or call one of my MT buddies when I am really stuck. LOL yes, if only we could choose NOT to transcribe foreign accents, as they can take twice as long to transcribe meaning you are only earn half as much as you could. Very frustrating and one of the reasons I so much want to escape from this job. |

I am a recent graduate from Rasmussen college with an associates degree in medical transcription. I graduated in September 2009 and am still looking for work. I have severe scoliosis so I need to work from home. I am looking for anyone who is willing to hire me to work for them from home. I am a fast learner and fast typist. I can type over 65 WPM. I am flexible with hours and am willing to work on the weekends as well. I hope someone out there is willing to hire me. Thank you |

have you found a job yet? |

No. Not even in the regular work field. |

The requirement from most companies and hospitals is that you type 80 to 100 minutes every day. They have software that checks the time you hands are actually on the keys typing and when you take them off, they know and aren't afraid to ask you what you were doing when you weren't typing. I have been a transcriptionist for many years and was lucky to start in the old days when other MTs in the office would help out with words you didn't know or understand. Those days are gone--everyone is out for themselves and no one wants to give help because it cuts down on their transcription. |

Graduated from Penn Foster, not AHDI approved school. Is there any hope for me to get an entry level job anywhere? |

I have been a MT for 27 years and I feel there is no way you can learn this profession by taking a course while staying at home or over the Internet. I had the help of many transcriptionist to go to for questions. I was lucky to find a job with no experience except being a good typist and speller and that was on a Selectric IBM typewriter. I am sorry to say those jobs are no longer in existence. Everyone want experience and computer skills. I have been working for my same doctors for the last 15 years and my work is done over the Internet. There are still doctors out there in the smaller clinics that dictate their chart notes but with the increase in computer-aided transcrition, that is coming to an end. Voice recognition is taking over in the hospitals and they are still shipping our work to India. The business schools don't even teach medical transciption because they see the handwriting on the wall. Sorry to give you such dismal news but it is not good no matter what the internet schools are saying. I wish you luck. |

You're full of negativity. What's wrong? It's obvious that you cannot handle the onslaught of new MTs. There is no writing on the wall. There is room for all of us. Learn to share! |

I have had a medical transcription business for 15 years - I feel very blessed and had no idea that the writing for our demise was written on any walls. I lost a company to India for 4 years ago -- guess what - they came back to the U.S. and to me. I certainly hope your wrong. I need to work another 15 years and can only hope and pray that my personal approach and my faith in God will hold it together for me and the 15 girls to whom I subcontract with. |

I do admit I could be somewhat jaded. I have had several friends lose their jobs to VR and outsourcing to India. It is very sad when I read about people completing their course and then find out that employers only hire experieced transcriptionists. I apologize if I hurt anyone's feelings but I just don't see transcription as a growing field for anyone to get into. Transcription has been wonderful for me over the years. I worked really hard and am still working, not because I really want to but because I have to. I know lots of seniors who still have to work because they didn't manage their money (me) and spent it on their kids. If I wasn't a transcriptionist I don't know what I would do right now. Sorry for being negative--my kids tell me that all the time. Peace |

HOW DO YOU EVEN GET INTO THE CONTRACT BIZ. I HAVE 4 BABIES AND NEED TO WORK AND BE AT HOME WITH THEM. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I worked in a hospital while going to school, it actually took me about 10 years of doing that before I was brave enough and confident enough to venture out on my own. I had a lot of good solid experience and a few contacts that helped to lay the foundation. Your in a difficult situation with 4 babies to raise (which are and should be your priority), so I don't know what to tell you to do if you don't have any foundation to build off of. I bet your a great mommy what about home childcare? |
|
scrazyp in Goodyear, Arizona 20 months ago |
You have a very difficult situation. If your babies are all at home trying to do transcription is almost impossible, and when just starting out there are so many questions that need answers. I didn't go home until I had almost 10 years in a clinic situation under my belt and it was just me and the dogs, so no bothers. With four little kids--well, I just can't think of anything harder. Employers will not put up with any mistakes--they want perfect work and no excuses. They are fickle and will drop you if you don't perform to their liking. It is a tough world out there. Good luck to you. |

Sir, In response to your request, your wife would need to have medical terminology, anatomy, and some pharmacology knowledge to get an entry level position. I am not sure what classes she has taken and if she has had any experience typing medical reports, that would be the best place to start. I do not employ outside of the United States so I am not sure what other information I can provide. Good luck in your endeavors. Sharon |
