Hi Gmalori: You are the first person I've heard on here that graduated from Allied. I will be finishing up their course shortly. I have 2 lessons left and the final. It's good to finally hear of someone who has done their MT course. I, too, have been concerned about being able to find a job after finishing. I would like to talk with you further. Feel free to e-mail me at sassyboutiquegirl@yahoo.com. Welcome to the forum! Angie |

Hi! I am a newbie, I guess. I took a transcription course about three years ago. I am currently transcribing practice files through a company. I have been doing this for over a year now. I am ashamed to say what company but put it this way you can never pass the test to get "live work." I have tried to apply for jobs that I have learned about through this forum but I did not get any bites. I did try to test with MedQuist but I guess I did not pass the test because they did not hire me. I am a Medical Assistant which does not make a difference in the transcription field. I am currently working for a GYN doctor in the clerical field. I really would like to gain a part time position as an at home transcriptionist. Does anyone have any advice on how to get my foot in the door? Thanks |

I took a 9 month course at a local community college, CPCC, in Charlotte. Received my certificate August 2007. A week after getting it, I was offered my local Chiropractor's account. Even though it is a low volume account, it is work, and I am so grateful that it came so soon. For now I am applying with national companies but may begin to just send out business cards in the local area to drum up direct business. It is a slow go, but I feel in time things will pick up. I have over 25 years of office/clerical work experience including medical/claims background. I have always loved the medical field. Good luck to everyone here. |

Thanks, everyone's situation will be different, but in the end, if one's determination and patience persists, then they'll end up with work. It may take longer than expected, but it will happen in due time. |

There is a company online called Medscribe that I wanted to know a little bit about. Has anyone worked for this company? Has anyone heard anything about this company? Do they hire newbies; it does not specify on the website? Can someone give me a rough estimate of how many pages 6000 lines would be? I have no idea what kind of time that would require. I currently have a job, but I received a medical transcribing certificate in 01, and I would really like to do a very light load of part-time work on the weekends while I continue at my current job. I am wanting some experience under my belt, and am not concerned with getting a large paycheck. Any suggestions. Anywhere I can get some real practice in, for a company so that I can later use them as a reference? Please let me know of any suggestions. |

There are more than one division of Medscribe. I believe they have a location in Florida and in Utah. I have a friend who is working under a sub contractor now who works for Medsscribe, ironically I am to get in touch with Medscribe later this month for work, per their request, as I was told end of November they would be hiring then. I have read and heard that they do hire newbies. The division I am dealing with is the Utah branch. You might consider Medquist also, they hire alot of MT's and it's my understanding their always getting new accounts. Check out the updated job listings at MTDAILY.com. Also MTSTARS.com, is another great forum. Good Luck.... :o) |

"Can someone give me a rough estimate of how many pages 6000 lines would be? I have no idea what kind of time that would require." When working full time as a newbie, 1000 to 1200 lines is considered average for an 8-hour day. |
|
MomtoCamNC in Belmont, North Carolina 54 months ago |
I would divide 6,000 by 65 (character line per page) and then divide the number of those pages by a 5-7 day work week, depending on your individual work week frame of time. Everyone's work week, line count, production, typing speed, etc. will vary. I am only looking at doing part time given my medical problems, arthritis, and a soon to be non functioning shoulder in a couple of months(which is due from years of data entry/production work) Anyway I hope this helps. Good Luck in your job search. I am still looking for part time. The one and only local account I now have is minimal and gives me work usually once per month. |

I would move on elsewhere, there are hundreds of other sub contractors and companies out there in MT land. I can recommend DIT Transcription in South Carolina as well as MTRecord in North Carolina. They both hire newbies and have wonderful platforms for hands on learning as you work and train. Good luck. |

Hi! Melissa I just finished taking another dredded test. I am going to keep testing with this company just to practice in hopes that I will eventually get a job. I cannot believe that I am not alone. I am so sorry that you are also going through the same thing. I know how you feel about being stuck. I have been at it for over a year now. All they give me is rheumatology dictation. I am really at a stand still. I guess that I will need to just transcribe for a private Dr. who specializes in this field. I am going to try to send out some resumes to different doctors locally. Like I said I did take a course three years ago but as far as I can tell that does not help because it was so long ago. Anyway, I wish you the best. Thanks for responding to me. Let me know how you are coming along. Thank you! Thank you! MomtoCamNC for the job sites. I will give them a try. Does anyone else have any other job sites that hire newbies? |

MomtoCamNC in Belmont, North Carolina 54 months ago |
You're welcome......I am too searching for steady work, although I landed a local account the week after I got my certificate this past summer, although it is a low volume acct, it is work and a good reference on my resume. I have a potential job prospect coming up in the next couple of weeks, thanks to a great online friend/MT. Isn't that the way things usually go? Not what you know but who. Hang in there everyone. I'll keep checking in here and just keep remaining persistent. There are some really great job sites out there, MTDAILY, MTSTARS, MTBOT........ |

Hi Donna Yes, I too am going to start sending out my resume to a bunch of different companies and see what happens. Someone is bound to hire me eventually. I think we need to just go out on our own and try to find someone who will give us a chance. I wish you the best of luck also. I will let you know if I get hired somewhere. Let me know if you get something. Thanks MomtoCamNC!! Thanks for all of the job sites and info. I am going to MTJobs.com and going to send out my resume to a bunch of these companies. I am persistent but patient, so I know I will eventually get something. Best of luck to you also in your job search. It is nice to know some people who are in the same boat with you. |

Cassandra Lavender in Warner Robins, Georgia said: How does a recent graduate in the field of Medical Transcription obtain a job? Seems no one wants to provide an answer and/or there seems to be no jobs available to those who have just recently graduated. The reason is that the field of MT is a dying one and pays very poorly when weighed against all you must know and learn in order to be proficient. 9 cents a line is tops. As an entry level MT, expect 4 or 5 cents. |

mtathome in Yorba Linda, California 54 months ago |
"The reason is that the field of MT is a dying one and pays very poorly when weighed against all you must know and learn in order to be proficient. 9 cents a line is tops" Beg to differ with you - I make much, more more than that, a very comfortable income, and MT isn't dying out. |

Ebony in Cedar Hill, Texas 54 months ago |
Hi mtathome, Is that because you have been in the field for a long time? I am also a newbie. Not making hardly anything right now but I'm hoping that will change with experience. Ebony |
|
mtathome in Yorba Linda, California 54 months ago |
Yes, you need experience to get faster enough to make good money. Some people dabble in MT for a while and give up, then tell other people that you can't make any money at it. Perseverance pays off. |
|
Ebony in Cedar Hill, Texas 54 months ago |
I understand. I'm not going to give up right now. I'm a pretty good typist and I have been in the medical field for a long time. Only problems I have is when I can't understand a doctor with an accent. That is what I thinks slows me down the most. |
|
mtathome in Yorba Linda, California 54 months ago |
Do you get samples for your ESL dictators? It's much easier to hear what they're saying when you have some of their past reports to look at. |
|
Ebony in Cedar Hill, Texas 54 months ago |
Hi mtathome: I'm not sure who this comment was meant for, but I will respond. Yes, I get samples and let me tell you, it helps! I guess because the doctors say the same thing over and over they just speed right on through. Without them I'm not sure if I would have figured out what they were trying to say. Ebony |

I am now disabled and I cannot sit for long or stand for long periods of time. I've always wanted to do something in the medical field but now I am limited. I am considering medical transcription or medical billing and coding. I would like to work at home so I can get up and move around when ever I want too. I live out in the country and only have dial-up or sat. internet. I don't know if I am able to work at home with that. I've taken a lot of medical courses already and love to learn. What websites or books out there will help me decide which one to go into. Send your resume to employment@jlodge.com they hire individuals with disabilities and have a Medical Quality Analyst Position avail. You work from home and they help you stay under your SSDI income limits. Make sure your resume reflects this and all education, and medical terminology info. |

Hello, Just joining in here and slightly sorting through all of your posts. Everyone speaks of resumes and I have been in the medical field for a long time, including being a transcriptionist... Does someone have any sample resumes that I can build mine from? I have several resumes already but I get the feeling that transcription resumes have different qualities. Thank you so much!!

I checked out Trans Am Associates and passed the transcription test. Then, I fould out they wanted $450 from me. Needless to say, I did not take a position with them. So be very careful with this company, unless you don't mind paying $450. Good luck in job search. I haven't found one yet either. |

I've been an at-home-mom for the past 13 years. Since my youngest is now 10, I decided to take a course in MT. Now I'm finished but want to work at home so that I'm still available for them. The course that I took gives great advice for getting jobs locally with pick up and delivery, but I was really hoping for a job that's totally on-line. Any suggestions? |

Why don't you 'Google" Medical Transcription" jobs in India.? I would start there. There are many US comapnies that outsource to India, but I am not familiar with which ones do. Good Luck. |

I am a newby and am having a difficult time finding an MT job. I have 21 years of experience in the medical field, but no experience as a transcriptionist. I am getting a little discouraged at this point. I have the course work I needed but need someone to take a chance with me and help me to obtain the training that I need. I would greatly appreciate any advise or help I can get. Thanks Melissa |

MomtoCamNC in Belmont, North Carolina 53 months ago |
I believe Mrecord in Raleigh North Carolina offers a 30 day training/work period. I had a friend who mentored with them for about a month, and soon after got an offer with another company. You can find out lots more info at www.mtstars.com or search for jobs at MTDAILY.com. Also join one of hundreds of MT groups, like Yahoo pages, I belong to 3 now and have learned so much from other's in the field. I finished classes last summer and was able to acquire a 'local' acct. with my chiropractor. At present time I am now testing with a couple of online companies. It just takes patience and perserverance. Good luck........:o) |

Hey everyone! It's been a long time since I've posted or checked out all the new posts. Since then, I did get hired on at a company called Millenium Business Services, LLC, based out of Florida. BIG MISTAKE! I signed the contract and got to work transcribing, and was told we would be paid on the 1st. of each month. I started in November, and have never received one paycheck. Well, I was getting pretty disturbed, as you all can imagine, so called her and bugged her and emailed her. Then, a few weeks ago, got onto my account to see if any jobs were available to transcribe, and guess what...my login and i.d. don't work anymore. So...to say the least, I think it's a scam. I did all this work for her and never got paid. It looked like a legite job, but come to find out, wasn't. So, I'm pretty bummed and on the search for a job again. Have any of you ever heard of this company before? The website is onlinembs.com, if you want to check out. Sarah |

I would locate the Better Business Bureau in the state this company is located in and turn them in, if nothing else, a file will be created on them with negative information. I would also contact Consumer Fraud online. I have a friend that had a similar situation happen as well, different comp, MTSO, she worked for about a few weeks and never got paid....... |

I wish I had good news but like all the post being a newbie seems to be the glitch. You have to be very careful as the ones that seem interested in hiring a newbie are not always on the up and up. Other gals have apparently had the same problem. Check out all the post and which business to stay away from. Apply or contact the ones listed that are safe. I have gotten so I look them up through better business bureu before I contact them on a job. This forum has been the best thing I have done as everyone gives great suggestions and has really helped me stay focused and keep trying so definetely stay in touch on this. Good luck, stay positive. |

Thanks for the advice. I think I am going to start getting my resume out there locally and see if I can land a job. Even if I do end up having to pick-up or deliver. (or be stuck in an office)Have to be willing to start somewhere. After all, it's not my like my kids are babies anymore. (Praise the Lord)

My son is 10, so I can't work outside the house, only if it were between the hours of 8am and 2pm, due to his school hours. That is my delima. The one local acct I have presently, I pick up the work and deliver. The round trip drive is around 17 miles. But only have to drive there usually once a month. Their work has slowed down quite a bit, but should pick back up later this month. Use networking in the field as much as you can. Best wishes.... :o) |

In my trainig they kept pounding the importance of fast turn around time. So what is the reality of turn around time to getting reports done? |

MomtoCamNC in Belmont, North Carolina 53 months ago |
The doc I work for usually only has tapes ready for me once a month, and I have 3-4 at one time. He leaves time constraints tup to me, but usually I have all his work done within a week or so. So I actually am making a trip to his office once to pick up, once to deliver. Most of the reports are not needed 24/7. The last reports I completed in two days, and sent back files via email. Being I am one of his patients, I simply return the tapes back to him on the day of my appt. (CHIRO ADJUSTMENT) So far all works out great......... |

Are you a member of either the OC-AAMT or a local chapter? I am having trouble finding information on how to go about doing that. I have put inquiries out there but have gotten no response. I have found one on-line but it cost $55. I don't have the money for that right now, hence, the need to locate some work. Any ideas? |
|
MomtoCamNC in Belmont, North Carolina 53 months ago |
www.ahdionline.org/scriptcontent/new_chapters.cfm You should be able to locate a chapter here. I don't belong to a chapter but a classmate/friend of mine does. Personally I don't feel the money involved in this is worth my while, but other's do feel differently.

Melissa H. in LosAngeles, Hi! Its Donna in New Orleans. Have you had any luck in landing a job? I hope that you have had better luck than me. I am still trying to pass these tests that are impossible to pass. I will take another on the 7th of this month (not that it matters). Are you still trying to pass? You seem to be the only person training with the same company. I guess everyone else checked it out first and knew better. Can you tell me what field your are transcribing? They have me doing rheumatology. I feel like I am going nowhere because they are only training me in one field. I have taken a few tests online with a few companies but because I am so limited (rheumatology expierence only) I cannot pass them. I am so frustrated. I have tried to send out my resume to a local rheumatologist but there was only one listed. Oh well! I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks, Donna |

I have already been searching for a job and have run into the same problem as everyone else. I live about 35 miles west of G.I. (near Ravenna) so when I saw you were my "neighbor" I thought I would check to see if you had any luck. Please let me know. Thank you. Julie |

Check out MRecord in Raleigh, NC too. They hired a friend of mine right out of school, although she was able to land another acct locally that paid more cpl about a month later. DIT Transcription in Ft Mill SC, try them as well. www.dittranscription.com Use the internet much much much. Networking online with other MT's is your best resource. There are many MT forum groups, ex. with Yahoo. I belong to 2 of them, and have learned alot from those that have been in this field for many years. Email me if you would like the groups I am now a part of. (3). :o) Currently I am handling one local acct, obtained right out of school last summer. I also hope to pick up some more part time work, but currently find that due to a shoulder issue my time in front of the keyboard is slowing down. This field has its ups and downs, but there are rewards to be had in the end. Everyone's situation will be different, and I have found that most of the newbies starting out might be disallusioned in the starting pay, but if you hang with it long enough and work yourself up to at least 1-2 years of experience, the sky will be the limit. God BLess
