I have 20+ years of experience doing medical transcription, including inpatient and outpatient clinic notes. I have now partially retired but would like to do transcription at home, online preferred. I am finding that the earnings are fairly meager for doing home based transcription for large services. Therefore, I am interested in marketing my experience and skills to small primary health care organizations or specialty practices, but have to keep my hours as part-time. I would appreciate suggestions about how I might accomplish this. |

Although the above ad was not generated by myself and I don't fully understand its origin,it is essentially correct in content except for a couple of points. I have never lived in Huntington, VT, and I will only do transcription out of my home office, online or tapes. Please make these corrections. Thank you. |

I am an RN and have recently graduated from At-Home Professions Medical Transcriptionist Course and am having difficulty in finding a part time postions working from home. It seems that most places want you to pay them to put out lists of postitions available. They don't take into account that I have been an RN, mostly hospital based in OB/GYN for 30 years. If anyone is interested, e-mail me at kbrzuch@buckeye-express.com |

In order to gain a certificate, as in Certified Medical Transciptionits (CMT), you need two years experience before you can even test to become a CMT. A certificate from a school is essentially same as a diploma. |

Yes, I am still seeking employment. I have not been pushing it too much this summer because I am so busy, but starting in August, I will be pushing for a position like crazy. Do you have something or some employment agency in mind? Kahry |

Hi, You probably should go to the Medical Transcriptionist Site and see what schools are endorsed by them if you decide to take classes from home. You also can get a book published by the Medical Transcriptionist Association and after reading up on transcription, try hospitals, doctors offices, and look in the phone book for transcription services and get a resume together and contact them to see if they could use your services. Good luck!!!!! |

Lynn: Trans Am is better known as Transcam. They will charge you $500 and promise a job upon meeting their requirements. Yo never will meet them, no one does. Check out the Better Business Bureau website and u will find all nothing but negativity. Do not give them money it is a waste of your time and money. Also, you will probably need a refresher if you have not done it in 20 years. MT is not an easy field to get in to without the proper, current MT training. Good luck |

Hi, I have been transcribing for 9 years in a small town but never received a certificate. I have a multitude of experience including hospital surgeries, admissions, discharges, opthalmology, and mainly chiropractic, which is all that I do now. I'm looking for full time work over the net. Should I take an MT course, or would someone give me a chance? I have references. Thanks. |

Ever read the papers? People are losing their homes here, I think outsourcing is a disgusting practice. |

I agree Joy. Why should Americans work to cushion the pockets of companies in India or other countries. Americans work for/in America. |

Kathryn Brzuchalski in Toledo, Ohio 15 months ago |
Give it a try, you never know what you will come up with. Doctor's offices and clinics may give you a try especially since you have references. |

Hi Im currently taking an at home course with UScareer Institute. Has anyone ever heard anything about them ? I will get a diploma upon completion of the course. I understand that I need to become certified before I can begin work. Is this true ? If so how do I become certified ? My course is self paced and I may take as long as 18 months to learn the material. Almost every job listing I see requires atleast 2 years experience. So how will someone like me even get started . I will have hands on experience later in the course but will that count as job experience ? The uscareer institute claims to help with job placement ..again has anyone heard anything about this school? Im investing a lot of time and money into my training so Im hoping its legit. |

Hello, No, I cannot say I've heard of your school, but then you may be from an entirely different part of the country. I live in Barre, VT. The answer to some of your questions should come from the school, ie, what they actually do to help place you in a position upon completion of the course. I would call and talk to someone in placement. On your own, you can drop off your Resume' at local hospitals and doctor's offices, and locate online companies who are hiring by googling. Secondly, the certification is a good idea and perhaps the school's requirement if they try to place you, but generally, you don't have to be certified - that's up to your potential employers. For someone just entering the field, again,it is the best choice because if you pass that test it is proof of your qualifications. You can become certified through AAMT (American Assoc. of Medical Transcriptionists). You can pull up their website on the computer by google and get the information you require from them directly. AAMT has a magazine you might want to subscribe to. There is a fee to take the test, I believe, but if I were you I would wait until you're almost finished with your course and studying to take it; otherwise there's always a chance you might have to take it again if you don't past. As to your question about experience - you will have to find an employer who are willing to hire at entry level, and your school should be helping with that. Best of luck to you in your new career. |

Yes, but I do not want to work for a transcription service again. I tried it and found I wasn't making enough money to even motivate me to work. I would perhaps work directly for a hospital or medical practice, but it's difficult to find good part-time jobs. |

Okay Lynn - I understand. This is for a transcription service - it would only be maybe 10 hours a week - basically just back up for me and another typist who share accounts. We both also do other jobs outside the home and sometimes get behind in work and need help. I'm sure there is someone out there who just wants to work a few more hours a week as a backup on call for help. It is always nice to work directly for the doctor though - I'm sure it is better money! I thought I would throw the question out there and then discuss it with the gal that I work for to see if we could bring on another person to do backup work. I see they like to change the location you are from on this board - :o) |

Many channels and requirements to hit before they are approved. My own school is trying to get approval right now but is not on the list yet (Kaplan University). If you have any questions about your school and it's actual approval you can always contact AHDI directly and inqure to them if they have made the list but are just not listed yet. I've been working with AHDI and AHIDSA for the past year. I hope this has been helpful :) Allison |

Peg, back-up work is prn work (you work when needed as a backup when there is overflow we can't get to and need help). It is rehabilitation hospital discharges and pulmonary. I thought I found someone but am waiting to hear back from them now. |

Sandy in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania said: Are you still looking for part time work at home? Yes, I would be interested in possibly doing transcription at home, but have found that many if not most of the hospitals and larger outpatient clinics send out their transcription to companies who then hire the transcriptionists at a much lower rate of pay to allow for company profit. When I tried working for an online transcription company, I felt like I had been essentially demoted because I was working for 8 cents/line compared to ll.5 cents a line 11 Anyone who has done transcription paid by the line will realize what a huge difference that is.
