I've read so many mixed reviews on getting into the field of medical transcription, and I'm more confused now than ever! I'm looking for a part-time job that I can do at home, while still being able to care for my kids. I know the job is very demanding of your attention/time, but I could work in the evenings when my husband is home (and I'm a night owl who is used to being up until 1 or 2am anyway). I am currently a student at our local university, working towards a degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, so I already have classes in anatomy (which should help me in that area of the course atleast). My husband's career has really taken a hit with the economy the way it is, and because of this I'm not sure I will be able to finish my degree and internship right now. I'm not looking for a quick money maker and am not overly concerned that transcriptionist DON'T make 50,000-80,000/year, as I advertised on some sites. I'd be perfectly happy with $20,000/year as long as I could be home AND still be a part of the medical community. But I am scared of investing in the course and then not being able to find work, as I've seen some say (while others say they have job's the first week). I've read some say they work from home right away (while others feel you need to work in the office for a few years first). So from those who are in the field - do you like it? Is this something I could do in the evenings/nights so I can still be home with my kids during the day? Do you see the field in a downward spiral or feel it will be around forever? Did you have a hard time getting into the field? Any school recommendations? Did you start out working at home or will I need to work in an office?
