What are the top 3 traits or skills every mental health worker must have to excel?

As a Peer Specialist working in the field of mental health, I can honestly tell you first hand that any worker who has a desire to excel in this field has to first examine their motives. If you want to truly work with an individual with a mental illness you must 1st. Have empathy and the belief that recovery is possible. 2nd. You have possess knowledge/understanding of the individuals illness in an effort to identify how you can best assist in their recovery process. 3rd. Having patients is critical because everyone recovers at their level of understanding whereby it's important never to transfer your beliefs but rather listen intently to what you are being told and learn to work from their frame of refernce or belief.
