Know the OSI model inside out, backward and in your sleep.
Understand at least some of the requirements from all 10 domains in the CBK for CISSP.
MATH is essential. I recommend at least an understanding of applied math.

*Kevin makes a good point about Checkpoint, PIX and Juniper*
The practical use and theoretical understanding (and mastering)of at least one of the above mentioned firewall/intrusion dection systems mentioned above is a great way to learn other aspects of security. This directly points to understanding protocols.

Hope this helps.

Network security comes with experience of two major things:

Computer Networking - TCP/IP all layer in the OSI model in deep like it was said by the professor and that takes time my friend.

Computer Security - Antivirus, Firewall, Intrusion Detection, VPN, Authentication, honeypots, there is so much here too.
