I have been out of work as a NMT for 2 years now after 24 great years in the profession. I have already gone back to school and on to a new career as a medical coder during this time (the local job market for other modalities is just as bad so I chose not to cross-train). Recently the program director of the local NMT hospital based program has retired and that position has become available but I will not be applying for it because in my right mind I can't tell people interested in NucMed to go into it right now. I think it'll be a long time for it to recover if ever. It was great while it lasted. Please pick something else.

Should i go into radiology or sonography instead. very interested in DI. Does anyone know about the NJ, NY, Pa,DE job outlook. I really dont want to become a RN. Im a single mom and would really need and want a job when I graduate.

Jenna,
Please request a full refund while you still can and RUN AWAY from that school and RUN AWAY from the nuclear medicine technology field and don't look back. After she graduates from this NMT program your daughter will have NOTHING to show for it except debt. Those statistics about job growth are indeed a CON. What were you told by the Program Director? Contrary to what you and your daughter might have been told by this school, there will be NO JOB for her as an NMT after she graduates NO MATTER WHAT! It doesn't matter how hard she works in the clinical rotations or even if she's at the top of her class with her grades, there are NO jobs in this field and I don't think the situation will change at any time in the future. If the Program Director tells you that there are jobs if your daughter is willing to relocate, please don't believe it. It's not true. Sorry, I know you were both excited about this opportunity but I'm honestly trying to help you because I've been where you are at right now and I feel that it's my duty to tell you the truth so you won't make this very costly mistake.

Paula in Saint Louis, Missouri said: I have been in Nuclear Medicine 30 years. I have been a teacher, department manager, sales rep, and RSO. I worked for HCA, with an incompetent tech who had an inappropriate relationship with the supervisor. It was HELL. I stuck it out for two years, but after he had 4 misadminstrations in 2 weeks, all unreported, they threatened my job if I reported them. Talk about between a rock and a hard place! Now, when anyone calls there, they tell a bunch of LIES about me. My annual reviews, however, are spotless. I need a job! I am single, and out of money. If anyone knows of ANYTHING, email me at pwilliamsgirl@gmail.com. I am so depressed.

HCA facilities are known for misconduct especially in upper management. A friend of mine worked at one, never late, always on time, never sick, took loads of call never complained, received letter after letter of praise from patients and MD's. Finally one day he got sick of his bosses tantrums in the department, the Radiology Director was known for his drug habit but they kept him until the technologist quit then they relocated the director to some other facility. Technologist that left earlier due to that same director still tell stories of the white powder on the directors face, stating it was not from donuts. Stories about how the guy never showed up on fridays or mondays(he had 4 day weekends) It is amazing how some people get away with stuff. HCA is also known for driving out and/or replacing senior staff technologist with lesser trained individuals

Thank you all for great replies. I learned a lot from all of you and I value your professional opinion.
We learned NOT to go and become NMT. But what do you recommend in a medical field? Someone said OT or PT is good direction.
I would like to hear more about what rout to take. Thank you :)

Dear Fellow Technologist,

I am deeply touched by the stories I have read here. It is obvious that the NMT Programs across the U.S. has over marketed their programs for the good of their pocket-books.

I have been practicing nuclear medicine since 1982 and have seen the changes come an go. I can not recall anything like this in the 27 years.

But, I am hopeful, and encouraged by the coming trends of new products, instrumentation, applications, and methodologies on the horizon.

You need to be regrouping and preparing your credentials now to be ready for the coming changes in the technologies. It will be important that you all become well versed in hybrid imaging systems.

I feel for all of you. But instead of complaining, start preparing yourself for the future. The future is now. Catch this next wave of instrumentation.

Hang in there people. We are entering a new generation of applications of hybrid imaging systems. Get on board. Learn the other modalities.

The wave is coming again. Dont be washed out to sea with out the proper education, training, experiences, and attitudes.

With all due respect Tim Marshall:
I think many of us have all heard about "new this, new that".."new products, instrumentation, applications, and methodologies on the horizon" before. No doubt there's plentiful of cutting edge technologies out there. But let's look at things practically and realistically.

May I ask you if your facility has the most up to date, "latest, and newest" products and do you upgrade and update constantly to the most up to date technologies. Or are you limited by budget and actual clinical use of these new technologies (ie, MRI/nuke hybrids, micro-PET, etc). Unless you work in research or the like, you(public) don't yet have access to these cutting edge gadgetries (places still where old single head Orbiters are being used--no disrespect to this old workhorse). From high cost of equipments(and upkeep) to the high cost of radiopharmaceuticals, the NM department isn't cheap.

...."You need to be regrouping and preparing your credentials now to be ready for the coming changes in the technologies. It will be important that you all become well versed in hybrid imaging systems."....

No such thing as "coming changes" as a certain time period.. HELLO..changes have been a continual process in Nuclear Medicine, and most techs have not had a problem adapting to new changes because it's been a part of NM. In addition, some places won't even let you touch the PET/CT without having a radiography license w/CT.

By the way, credentials mean nothing if you can't use them.(no jobs= no use)

Also you've REALLY got to love what you do. Better to have a person be passionate about 1 or 2 modalities, than have a multitude of credentials but a half"donkey" interest in them.

..."I feel for all of you. But instead of complaining, start preparing yourself for the future. The future is now."...

You're right, future jobs aren't in NM..and right again, the future is NOW and there's NO jobs in NM.

..LOVELY last salespitch too..

I resent your comment about us whining. I have 30 years in Nuclear Medicine. I lost my house this year, at the same time as my best friend got to retire! Walk a mile in our moccasins! I am thankful for a forum that allows me to know that I am not the "only" one!
I had to have a Bachelor's degree to go to Nuclear Medicine School. I resent these technical schools, whose TRUE AGENDA is to loan people money. They are just loan sharks, plain and simple! I spoke to one of them about a cross training program in MRI. $18K. Of course, they wanted to loan me the money, at an outrageous interest rate.
I am told old, and now so broke, I can't go back to school. I get travel gigs and try to save all the money to keep my car and eat in-between. It ruined my marriage, all the financial woes. I would like to believe you are right, that we will rise from the ashes. I know we have before, but I don't think it will happen this time.
If this forum helps keep people from flooding our profession, which is already in crisis, I say YES! I have often wondered how to get the word out to the prospective students to these diploma mills so yet another parent doesn't sink their life savings and dreams into NOTHING!

I just looked up his web site. The faculty is HIM and a DIETICIAN?! Is that your wife/girlfriend? What does a dietician have to do with Nuclear Medicine?
Were all your multiple letters after your name ONLINE?
Is it YOUR job that is being advertised on the web? I saw the opening in Florida at the place on your credentials.
Another loan shark???

Dear Friend,

I am optimistic that our profession will succeed and rise up above this slumping healthcare crisis.

I also believe that we must start to think out side of the box. I have spent many hours working with my staff of programmers, computer engineers, radiologist, educators, bankers, lawyers, technologist to develop a product that the NMTCB, SNM, and various State DOH has highly recommended. As of a matter of fact, this institute is the only company offering Alternative Eligibility training for technologist and PET Registry Review, Mock Registry Exams Online in the world.

My website is still underdevelopment. If you are angry, I can see why, but dont direct your anger towards me and my company. I refuse to be a victim of my environement. Step up, or perhaps you should get out of the way of progress.

Regardless, things can only get better. Hang in there.

You came to this forum and called us "whiners". IMO you are here to drum up business for your company. I wish you success, but under my first amendment rights to free speech in a public forum, I will express my opinion. You flaunt your credentials, etc. If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen. I hope in my heart of hearts that Nuclear Medicine will survive. It has left many of us in a bad place, and we need the support of our peers. Just my 2 cents, which is about all I have at the moment.

I appreciate the fine folks here commenting and giving us a real life reality on the state of general Nuc Med. I have a manager for over 10 years and have never seen such a rise in COST to operate a general Nuc Med Dept. I can not justify having 3 fulltime techs for the next fiscal year. The pressure is on to cut costs. If the price of the radiopharmaceuticals keep going up and the demand for general Nuc Med keeps going down...I will be forced to cut back on hours.
The reality is that 50 mpercent of the smaller hospitals can not afford PET or do not have enough patient numbers to justify the expense.
I beleive Nuc Med has its place..but will be cut back or eliminated in smaller hospitals or clinics.
MRI and Ultrasound is crazy busy now.
Good Luck NMTs.

We have looked into PET?CT..you must have a large oncology patient base. The cost of purchasing a PET/CT was turned down...no revenues to support.
I beleive training in MRI and Ct for our NMT's is a must. Lower enrollments in NM schools is a must too.

Mr. Tim Marshel:

Is there a reason why you pulled your Website online?

Can you also answer the previous questionaire's inquiry about cost/fees for your "service"? I'm sure that all of us want to know how much you're charging for your programs.

And if I'm not mistaken, for us NMT to obtain PET certification, we do not need any "formal" academic hours to sit for the exam. You can do the study on your own. The only requirements are the 700 documented hours of studies. Which brings to point the almost improbable nearly impossible hire/train by most places since they would like someone who can also do CT diagnostically.

The problem most NMTs (without a radiography license) are having is that most places want to only hire/train those with CT radiography/ license (due to the fact that diagnostic CT cannot be performed by NMT only licensed individuals). This only makes sense for most facilities because if things are slow in one dept. then the worker can work in another as well.

So to all you NMTs out there, a caveat before you pay for a service that is not required. WHAT IS required is that you have a facility let you obtain the 700 hours(this would let you take the exam for PET, but NOT diagnostic CT). Thus, Mr. Marshel's difficulty in finding places to place people (aka. "YOU find your own place to train"--which can be nearly impossible due to insurance/legal reasons). Thus, the solicitation to pay you to find him clinical sites to train.

Also, do your programs offer the individual "student insurance" coverage by which to train?). Again everyone wants to cover their "donkey".

Furthermore, I do sincerely congratulate you on all your credentials, however, is it not the case that all accredited places will require at least Bachelors or Masters degree to teach in the near future? (and I do apologize if you already have one)

To Kristina in DC:

In my personal opinion, please think carefully before going out to get the MRI (unless time and money is not an issue).

I'd like to stress that many facilities and hospitals see MRI and NMT as an extension of Radiography (X-ray). These places for the most part want someone who can do x-rays in addition to other modalities. An X-ray license is almost a "standard", then MRI, NM, CT, etc..are additional "bonuses". It's been that people who already hold a x-ray license are further trained with additional specialties if needed(at the facilities cost).

Stand alone MRI and NMT programs popped up everywhere due to a "crisis" situation when there's a shortage of people to fill them. This period of "crisis" has peaked, because the void has been filled. There's no longer a "crisis" in x-ray techs, more so a saturation now, so this gives those who already hold x-ray license to further obtain additional modality skills (thus more marketable).

No matter which facilities, x-rays are almost always the first thing performed before any other (because of its broad diagnostic, although not always specific, standard). If you have a speciality (ie, MRI, NM), how can a facility ask you to fill in to do the most basic of imaging(x-ray), if MRI, or NM is slow?

This current period in NM only exhibits the weakness of specialty ONLY based personnel(especially when hit by multiple circumstances: abundance of graduates, economy, RP issues, costs, flexibility, etc...).

Good Luck Kristina--

I can't believe how horrible all of these stories are! I am a Nuclear/PET Tech that graduated with a Bachelor's in 1995, and have never had difficulty finding full-time positions. I know it is harder to find positions with benefits right now, because everyone is cutting costs. However, I work full-time but not 5 days a week and frequently have facilities calling me looking for help! I have, in the last two months, turned down 2 local offices who needed help because I am busy enough and they weren't paying high enough. I have more work opportunities than I want! It's amazing to me that techs are having such a hard time finding jobs!

Dear Friend,

Could you be so kind as to list the various names of the doctors offices looking for help on this page? I know of at least 3 NM technologist in the Fort Myers area looking for work.

Thanks again,

Tkm

Not everyone here is out of work... there are several folks, including me that do have work, FT with benefits, but that does not mean we should close our eyes to what is going on.

CNMT/PET in Cape Coral please be kind enough to share, if what you are saying is as you are saying it. There are folks here on this forum that have come and said similar as what you are saying and never gave any info, just like you. That does not help any one here, but rather it looks like you are rubbing it on unemployed techs faces... Lets be nice and share if we have what to share.

Give me time, don't assume I won't respond ("just like you") when I only posted my message a few days ago. I don't look at these things every day! You aren't even in the area!

LeHigh Hospital had someone quit a while back, whether they have replaced the tech or not I don't know. The other spots are all PRN. They were Radiology Regional, an office on Metro called Advanced something, and RX for Imaging. I also heard recently that a cardiologist in LeHigh was looking for help for stress tests in office, but I never asked for any details. My advice is to go to meetings to stay in the loop, I hit meetings frequently whether I need points or not, just to talk to people.

I know how you feel it was very hard for me to get a job after graduation. The only thing I can tell you is do not knock part-time and/or relocation. I also have a daughter to take care of. I had to move to california and get a part-time job. It ended up being for 32hrs only 8 short of full time. Excellent pay decent benefits can take care of my family..so just cause it says part-time it may still be a great offer.

I say go for it if you have the time and $ to do it. I would just check ur state requirements becuase some states require to run an MRI you must be RT certified first, others do not. So I wuold check that out before I do anything. Good luck.

Stitch what you said is oh so true. Doesnt matter if you were top of the class we all have the same chances...slim to none...not saying there aren't chances out there they are just far and few. Most of the people I knew that got hired knows someone that is in a position to hire for that facility...right now its all about who you know.

very well put. there are a lot of other medical positions that are in demand my advice is go into you local paper or hospital websites and see what is in demand in you area. Again of course this does not guarentee that she will get a job...there are never any guarentees when a degree and college are concern. Abut I do agree please go to college 1st that way you always have other options and doors open.

OT and PT are both great professions and demand right now with good pay...I would advise to stay away from the imaging field in any form right now....

I am/was also a Fort Lauderdale resident. Born and raise. Just moved to California cause I couldnt get a job back home...i was one of the top graduates in my class so please heed my advice..I agree with some of the other replies PLEASE do not have your daughter go into a tech program right now...they do only care about making $ and if she already started try and get a refund...even if they do "promise" job placement it is not true there are so many people being taking advantage by these tech schools....it is not true right now there is no growth or promises of a better future (yet I always hope for the best).... who knows tho she might be one of the lucky ones who does get a job but I wouldnt bank on it and have all that wasted time a debt. Also the college thing is a great idea (i know many people do not want to go to college) but the majority of graduates now have AS or BS degrees and many facilites are now requiring this to get a job in any imaging modality. There are some hot jobs still out there for medical tho...of course (RN) nursing being one but again no future guarentees since many student now who cant get imaging jobs are going back to school for nursing also I dont reccomend that if she does decide to do nursing go for the RN degree becuase if you check around a lot of hospitals are no longer hiring LPNs, instead hiring RN's or CNA (certified nursing assistant). Lab Tech and Physical Therapy also Medical Technologists are in gerat demand... just look in your area and see all the job listings and see which one looks like it has great demand. You did great trying to help your daughter and direct her path. If this was 5 yrs ago she would be all set..just many things have shifted and changed and remember NOTHING is recession proof. Good luck..I am sure things will work out

As a practicing NMT here in NYC, I have to say that I am utterly outraged and disgusted by all radiology interestes who are slowly pushing myself and many other of my fellow NMT out of our professions.
When I graduated my program ALL OF US had, at the very least, a bachelors degree...some, even a Masters. Yet, in order for any of us to find work as CT techs, we need to go back to 2 years full-time X-Ray school (High School Diploma Required) and then additional CT training. What an absolute abomination.

The Nuclear Medicine community is so small, that if we were allowed to become
X-Ray and CT techs WITHOUT having to quit our jobs to go back to all that schooling, the radiographers would not really skip a beat and lose any jobs to us. However, X-Ray tech can further their education without limit and currently, they can find many jobs all over, unlike us NMTs.

If only their was a way to file a class action lawsuit against the U.S. Dept. of Labor for misleading so many of us with their phony statistics, or suing the radiography regulatory bodies of NY and the tri-state area for systematically phasing us out of our field for no reason whatsoever when we are all educated, hard-working and capable and yet only ask for a chance to further ourselves without so many damn restrictions. It's criminal!!!

I'm an Xray tech with a AS degree who went back to school and got a bachelors degree in NucMed. Honesttly Xray n nucmed are fundamentally different, so someone in nuc would have to go back to school to learn diagnostic Xray. To say a Nucmed tech should be allowed to become Xray techs without schooling is a joke. I honestly don't see some Nucmed techs who can handle the stress radtechs go through as so-called button pushers. Please don't down radtechs because the Nucmed modality is losing procedures to other modalities.

@ Radiation Boy:

First of all, last I checked a Bachelors is worth a lot more than an Associates. Secondly, I never said NMTs should be allowed to do X-Rays or diagnostic CT without any schooling whatsoever. What I did say was that it's absurd for us to have to quit our full-time jobs to go back down the educational ladder just to allow us to do the same things were already doing at our jobs (SPECT/CT, PET/CT).

If you have any suggestions as to how someone who already possesses a Bachelors degree and works full time can go back to X-Ray school, I would love to hear it. I'm pretty sure my search was rather extensive and yet there is not even a single part-time X-Ray program in all of NY, let alone, one that is not a mandatory 2 years. Now, you tell me how that is fair.

You don't think NMTs handle or go through stress? come work where I work...because it is obvious that YOU are the one who is downing the Nuclear Medicine field. This is not a matter of intelligence, it's a matter of giving opportunities to some and excluding others due to political influence in legislation.

There is no comparing how much worse it is for my field to have tens of thousands of X-Ray and CT techs allowed to cross train into it as opposed to the hundreds of NMTs who are not allowed to cross train into yours (in a reasonable time).
