Will a BSN help me get into a specialty easier?

Learning Something New Everyday in Stockton, California

I'm thinking about becoming a nurse. If I go into the field I have always wanted to go into NICU, L&D, or something working with children or babies. I don't want to do MedSurg, even though I know I can get lots of experience there. So if I get a BSN or higher, will that help me in becoming a specialty nurse?

I have been working as an L and D nurse for 3 1/2 years now. I did not have to have a degree to get into the field. Look up some of your hospitals in the area and see if they take fresh graduates even of a diploma school, which is what I did. I graduated from a diploma school and did six months on another unit then transferred to the L and D unit. At our hospital we have people starting in l and d and nicu areas right from graduation. I am just now going for my BSN. I feel that one day it may better help me down the line when I am to old for this. Good Luck to you.
