I am looking to change my career from commercial real estate to geriatric care. Problem is I have no idea where to start - degree in Business Mgmt. and no experience. Can anyone tell me where to begin?? Education, licenses needed, what sort of job I could potentially get? Thanks so much for any help!

In the US most states have a licensure requirement for Nursing Home Administrators or Assisted LIving Facility Administrators. Both are good business management jobs with good pay structure. In most states a Business bachelors degree is sufficient to get started on the licensure. Next you need to do an on-the-job and didactic study program to prepare for the licensure exam. You could start by contacting a local geriatric facility, take a tour, talk to the administrator and find out how he/she got into the field. Another great resource is the local/state/regional healthcare association. Look for a AHCA/ICAL affiliate.

Hope this helps.

Traci, contact the state licensure board of nursing home administration. Ask for schools that have programs available. Some community colleges have these programs and are less expensive. In most cases, 1.5 to 2 years of course work and in most cases, a practicum experience will qualify you to sit for the boards, state and federal exams.
