I am at the moment out of work but I am working on my Associate's Degree in Business Management majoring in HealthCare. I am looking for a job but it isn't easy right now with so many people out of work at the present time but I am persistent and I will find something. I want to work with the elderly as I find that very comforting. I would like to know what courses I have to take or what I have to do to take the Administrator's Exam without actually working at a facility. If there is such a thing do I then have to be in training for a period of time before I actually get my license. Please let me know whatever you can that will help me in my quest.

The requirements for licensure are allocated differently by state. In Ohio, you are required to complete 1000 hours of an AIT with a bachelor degree or 600 hours with a master's. In addition, there are core courses that are required from Ohio State University. You must attain a successful score on the national and state exam for licensure. The minimum requirement for eligibility is a bachelor degree. I have a diploma in licensed practical nursing, a BA in general studies, and an MS in leadership strategy. The field is competitive, and I would recommend that you attempt to find a position that gives you experience while you continue your education. In a nursing home, you may attempt to apply for an admissions assistant position. This may help you get started. Best of luck! |

Looking to make a career change. I also have a CNA I license (although I only used it during the summer before going back to college). I would be grateful for any help! |

I am still trying to arrange for an AIT position in Western NY. I think the best bet is to contact the administrators at various nursing homes directly. The state of Dept. of Health can't really help in NY. They have no list of facilities that have taken on AIT's in the past. They want us to find the AIT positions and then after getting the facility to take us on we have to hope the state will approve it. Seems backwards to me but....good luck, and again, try contacting any and all facilities with in the area you hope to stay in. Tammy |

Good evening everyone I actually wanted to see if anyone had any information to give me regarding how I would be able to land a health administrator position. I was looking at the requirements for Colorado and it states that all is needed to be a licensed Healthcare administrator is by having an associates degree. I was quite shocked I also thought you had to have a Bachelors degree. I guess some states have different requirements. I guess my question is do you think that an employer will offer you a AIT program without saying you don't have expierence? |

C in Tampa, Florida said: I understand your frustration with the entire ordeal. Have you ever considered asking the internship director at your former university to seek out a nursing home that will be willing to accept you as an AIT. It makes sense to strive for your Bachelor's as well as Master's degree because no one can take that education from you. I too am in the Masters program with my concentration being in Gerontology and I have had a wonderful experience as an AIT here in Tampa under the care of a nursing home administrator is knows his job. I graduated 2 years ago with a BS in Health Care Administration and got my FL NHA Lic. in March. Instead of doing an AIT (1000 hrs) that you most likely won’t get paid for, I did a 120 hr internship that was accepted by the state board. I would recommend to those of you who are going to school to enroll into a course that is strictly an internship. It takes less time and satisfies the sanctions to qualify to sit for the exam. |

I'm on here reading about all of these people looking for AIT programs and say they have experience, they worked in a rehab setting, blah blah blah- why are you not using your connections? When I was looking for an AIT, I had 2 offered to me within one week of getting the word out there that I was interested. I've worked in Admissions/Marketing (which by the way is probably some of the BEST experience you can get if you're looking to get your feet wet) for about 2 years since graduating with my undergrad in Health Sciences/Geriatrics. I called up a friend at another facility, told her I was looking for an AIT position, and she said she'd see if her administrator needed one. The next day I had an interview and was offered more money than I make in admissions to do the AIT. I went back to my own boss, let her know of the situation, and she got me all the information needed to do an AIT within our own company.

Please let me know what you know about A.I.T. programs in Mississippi or Louisiana. I have seen the list of preceptors for Mississippi. In Louisiana you may or may not get paid. In MS, you have to be hired by the company. Any suggestions on where to start? |

I to have my BSHA and am looking for an AIT position. I contacted the state and got the list most of the information they gave me was wrong. I did get a few responses though; however, with the economy most companies have a hiring freeze on. In response to this I have continued as a CNA and continue to work and go to school until I can find one. I am continuing my education by taking my MBA with a core in healthmanagement. So if anyone outthere has another suggestion I would appreciate it. |

Have you had any luck in your search for an AIT program. I read that Martin University has paired with the Indiana Health Care Foundation, however, it is only for minority students. I was going to contact the Professional Licensing agency, but didn't know how helpful they will be. |

I just finished my BS- Business Administration but I am doing my master's at Webster U. Just started last monday but I thought it would be a good idea to gain that experience while I am doing my master degree which is in Health Admin. I am also looking for a good review book for the NAB exam so if anyone can help, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you and good day. Sincerely, Juliano |

I was wondering if anyone has any information as to where I could find a predeptor in the local Las Vegas Nevada area? I will be graduating with a Bachelors degree in Health Administration-Long term Care and want to be a licensed administrator. I found a lady that is willing to accept me, but until I get something in writing or saying that it is approved then I'am looking for other options. I guess you can say plan B. I'am graduating in February 2010 from the University of Phoenix so if anyone has information as to where I can start looking it will be appreciated. I have called around to different nursing homes and it seems that none besides the lady that I spoke with has any such program. So anything will help. I have nursing home expierence and healthcare expierence for 10 yrs. |

I have not had any luck in my pursuit of an AIT program either. I interviewed with a company in Kansas and I have been bugging their office with phone calls. I am told due to the economy the person I interviewed with is now doubling as an acting administrator. We can only hope something positive happens soon. |

Hi Pamela, I wish you luck in finding that match. I know what you mean by it being a struggle about finding an AIT program I know of a couple of companies here say that they do it but when you try to look further into it then then say that they don't have any open positions. It like how does a person gain that experience if no one is willing to assist someone in pursuing their career goals. I know it can be frustrating, but just hang in there. Hopefully something will open up for you |

Hi there, I can truly say that finding an AIT program has really been hard, alot of places are stating they are doing them any more because of the budgets. So i my self just decided to take my state licensing exam and work from that. I want to know if any one can give pointers on how to study and pass the NAB exam. |

I am looking for a Nursing home Administrator in Training program to gain my license in FL,NC,TN or ARK. I am currently working on my Ph.D in Public Policy. I have taken course work in Health Service Administration and would like to get the proper training in this profession so i am able to succeed. The process here in GA is taking so long and no nursing home really are producing preceptors in the area. |

Thanks for the hint, but that kind of defeats the point in finding an AIT in the first place. In that, I mean, it has been really hard to get one any where. I wrote my congressman and state representatives last week to help. So far, I have gotten feedback, but no calls. But it has only been one week, so I am waiting still. |
