best way to do it...Leslie Powell class and speak with Patricia. Although they cannot guarantee you a job, they can surely help you pass national and state exams..you have to do the work though. They have put together a detailed plan into passing the tests. I have 22 years in the industry and they have shown me many new eye opening ways of succeeding...Ed

Hi Julie,
I am going to be moving to Cincinnati soon and was wondering how did you get into the AIT program? Did you work in a nursing facility for a long period of time? I graduated last year with a BS in Health Management and Policy and I have a year experience in assisted living facility and many years of experience managing a small business but having trouble getting a job in a nursing facility as a head department (admissions, social services, activity director, etc). Do you have any advice for me because i would like to have a job lined up or an AIT program before moving. So, the sooner I get a job or get in a program the faster I move. Any advice or suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

The books that I have been suggested to study are NAB satudy guide and James Allen 5th Edition book. But some people said the watermelone book is a great help too.
If you have already taken the Exam I hope you have passed it and if you have not taken it Yet... Good Luck!
PS. would you please let me know how was the nab exam???
Thanks

Hello Ladies,

I was just reading your message back and forth to each other. I have been an administrator for 6 years, so it has been a while since I took the NAB, but moved from another state to NC and had to retake the state test. Any state you move to, you must retake the state exam. Directly out of college I was given an AIT and became licensed and received my own building shortly after. The best method to secure an AIT is to go to different nursing home company websites and look for AIT positions. Usually only large corporations do them (from my experience). Second, the difference between the NAB and state exam is like night and day. The state exam is ALL memorizing the regs...if you are not good at memorizing, you may have a hard time. The NAB is all practical info that you could apply to everyday professional life. The state exam gives you the reg word for word and you must fill in the blank with the best multiple choice answer. Although the NAB was difficult, at least you could apply reason, you can not do that with the state exam. Best of luck ladies. I wish you the very best. Although it's hard, it's worth it!

Hello,
Thank you for your help. I have been looking online for the AIT positions but so far no luck. Either they are not available at the moment or I dont hear from them. Sames goes for head departmental position. Sometimes i feel like are they really hiring or do they not take down the position as it fills up. Its just been a real touch year and frustrating. Did not think it was going to be hard to find a job. Well, thank you for your reply. take care

Hi Julie, Saw ur quote online, I am also preparing for my state and Fed exam, but I believe for state exam "Law and Rules" book provided by state is enough for anyone to prepare for the exam for the Fed exam i have already placed the order for Nursing Home Administration by James Allen and the other book by same author that has almost 800 sample questions.
I just want to know if there is a short term course that help candidates in preparing for the exam.

This is just my opinion but I think those courses are a huge waste of money. There are only 3 books you need to pass the NAB.

1. The NAB Study Guide - you'll see very similar versions of questions out of this book on the actual test.
2. Federal Regs (watermelon book) - you don't need to memorize every single reg but understanding how surveyors interpret those regs will come in handy on the test.
3. Townsend's "Principles of Health Care Administration" - it's almost like this book was written for the test. Personally, I think it's written much, much better than the Allen books and it is very comprehensive. It makes the perfect addition to the NAB study guide.

Good luck to you all and have a great Christmas!

I think this site will help you. I believe within 30 days the state will let you know if you have submitted your application successfully. I haven't gone through the process yet, so I don't personally know how long it takes.

Oh boy. That doesn't sound good. I'm eligible through a masters program to sit for the exam, but I'm waiting on my transcripts before I can turn my application in. Have you found any good study material/practice questions for the Florida Rules & Regulations test?

obergdena in Oxford, Massachusetts said: Is it a requirement to take the state exam before the national exam? Anyone have study materials/exam questions for the NAB or the state of MA? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Does anyone know of any AIT positions in Central MA??? These positions are non existant! How is one supposed to apply to take the exam when you have to go through the AIT before even applying when there are no positions. Additionally, I contacted the state board and they basically said it is my responsibility to find an AIT position. Unbelievable. Anyone out there with any suggestions? I have a BS in Business Admin. and currently working on my MS in Healthcare Admin. I have been an executive in the healthcare staffing industry as well as worked in medical records and as a CNA in a long term care facility.

There is no state exam in Massachusetts. I did an AIT in MA in 2008 as an internship for my Masters degree. If you find an AIT which I hope you do and if it is in Massachusetts apply to the board as soon as you find one. The administrator/preceptor must write a letter. Massachusetts only requires a 3 month AIT if you have a Masters degree. This is where I got screwed they gave me 6 months because I did not have my Masters. I started June 1. Left in December when I received my degree. Have no administrator's license. Administrator was not interested in mentoring/precepting me. So I left. I'm now $$$ in debt with no job and no prospects.

I ordered my study guide book from NAB for the national exam and that is all I studied. I got a 96% with an hour to spare. It has practice questions at the end of each domain and some of those questions were on the exam. When I went online to sign up for the exam, it gave me the option of ordering the book.

If I were you, I would find someone on this site that's already in an AIT program and try to get confirmed with their preceptor for their next opening. They are more receptive if it's an associate of someone they know. Or do like my girlfriend did: She applied for a position at a preceptor's facility, worked a couple of months PRN and then inquired about the AIT program. She got it and is now licensed a year later.

I found my AIT position by contacting the state for a listing of all licensed nursing homes. I then called each and every one of them in the area I was interested in, asked to speak to the administrator (or left a msg), and then I inquired whether they were accepting any AITs. In doing that process, I found the best facility and preceptor ever! I finished the AIT, took the state and federal and passed the first time, and now in process of looking for a facility. Good luck!

I have tons of materials and have studied and did an AIT of 1,000+ hours even though my state only requires 480. (Kansas)

I took the NAB test twice and missed it by a few percentage points. The first test I felt was mainly accounting and finance; many tend to be weak in these areas, but I felt like I did well. Got my results and I got a 106/150.

My 2nd attempt I got a 112/150 which is 1 point away from passing. I was so mad! I've read the James Allen book about 4 times and I know the Federal regulations. I plan on taking it in the next few weeks, if I pass I will DONATE my materials to someone in need of them.

For those of you who live in Kansas, talk to KACE in Topeka, KS. They will get you lined up with a preceptor and have quarterly training classes trained by seasoned Administrators. Also, the 480 hours is NOT enough time to get properly trained to be a successful administrator.

The test is difficult for me, for one I have ADD and it is increasingly difficult to remember the material even with hands on training. I figure that I have put well over 2,000 hours into this so I keep my chin up and keep at it.

When I pass the test I will upload the math questions that are very similar to the test questions. Please remember your not allowed to use a calculator at all.

Word of advice from my preceptor is to eat a high protein breakfast, eat a piece of chocolate right before going in and chew a piece of bubblegum during the test. It helps with memory...

Good Luck

I'm starting my preceptorship in 2 months! I just found my preceptor, so I figure now is a good time to start looking for books... Any clues to which ones I should start reading now? I've looked through some of these posts.. is there a regulations book? or can I find that online somewhere...

I've searched a bunch of websites, but never really got to any content. I'm looking for some real study material, or some thick reading that will be helpful to start reading now.

Any help would be wonderful.
