Hello, I am a 12-year old boy with VERY severe farsightedness. My right eye is -9.00 diopters (not sure if that is the correct unit) and my left is -7.00. I have a few questions: 1) What age can I have LASIk surgery?
I've had glasses since kindergarten, and am currently wearing hard contact lenses. There have been times when my vision increased by -2.00 diopters, and there has been a time when it has not changed at all in a year. I'm pretty concerned, so please answer my questions. Thanks! |

Your prescription is pretty high, and because you're only 12 years old, you wouldn't want to have LASIK done now because your prescription will continue to change until at least your mid-20's and getting LASIK with such high of a prescription may cause you to have severe side effects, which could leave you with worse vision than you currently now have. Hope this helps! |

Let's say I'm 18 (legal age for LASIK; you're saying I shouldn't have LASIK since my vision is already this bad? And by the way, my vision should probaly increase by -4.00 diopters by 18. |

I'm not saying you shouldn't have LASIK bc you're vision is already this bad, but it's not at all stabilized. It's like getting plastic surgery on your nose when you're pinocchio (sp?). Also, bc you're prescription is so high, you might not be eligible. LASIK isn't a procedure that can be done on everyone, you have to meet certain qualifications. If you really want to know, go to your optometrist and get a consult. Hope this helps! |

Lasik Surgery should only be considered once your Rx has fully stabilized... this is usually in your mid 20s. Its not weird to have your RX change a lot if you are growing.... If you Rx is too high, lasik can't be done and fully correct your vision the cut off is different for everyone but -7.00 is a pretty good guess at the cut off of fully corrected lasik... (need to have enough tissue there to do it safely) .. your doctor would have to measure the thickness of the front of your eye to know if you qualify for lasik or not, and if not, PRK is likely your best option for surgery with the current options, your doctor could tell you more about that if you ask (but again can't be done until your Rx stabilizes) However, the good news is if you're only 12 now though by the time your Rx has stabilized an implantable contact lenses may be more of an option, they are a fairly new procedure now, I don't know any people personally who have had one yet but in 10 years who knows! There are always new things on the horizon.. Right now the hard contact lens is your best and safest move, so sounds like your doctor is taking good care of you...you could consider one with a bifocal in it to minimize your focusing if you want, there is some research to suggest this is a good idea. Also, make sure you get a yearly dilated exam to continue to monitor the health of the back of your eye. Good Luck! |

I don't understand where this mid-20's number comes from. I never needed vision correction until my mid-twenties. Now I am 40, and I don't need it anymore. I don't know what caused my distance vision to get worse, then get better. It got gradually worse for about 6 years, leveled off for a few years, then started getting better. Now I need no corrective lenses at all. Perhaps all my reading and watching tv at the same time "exercised" my eyes. Anyway, my son has had poor vision all his life, he's 12 now. He wants lasick. Like me his vision was getting much worse every year, but recently it has started to taper off. Maybe with exercise we can improve his vision as well, instead of surgery. |
