Coastal Contacts, a mail order company that has been selling contacts without prescription, has engineered a bill that will eliminate the need for a prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses and would allow opticals to prescribe from autorefractors in British Columbia, Canada. This is due to go into effect May 1 and is currently in the public hearing stage. A precedent would be set that eye examinations should be required only in high risk populations and optical products can be sold on a buyer beware basis if this goes into effect. More details are presented in the supplement below.

Soon, these laws will be implemented throughout Canada.
