Coastal Contacts, a mail order company that has been selling contacts without prescription, has engineered a bill that will eliminate the need for a prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses and would allow opticals to prescribe from autorefractors in British Columbia, Canada. This is due to go into effect May 1 and is currently in the public hearing stage. A precedent would be set that eye examinations should be required only in high risk populations and optical products can be sold on a buyer beware basis if this goes into effect. More details are presented in the supplement below. Soon, these laws will be implemented throughout Canada. How will this effect Optometry and Optometrists in Canada? |
