What do you enjoy most about being an orthodontic assistant? What do you dislike the most? Is it challenging? Are there many opportunities to learn and advance?

What keeps you at your job?

hello, i have been an ortho assistant for 6 months now, at 1st very frustrating i'd leave crying some days, but let me say, now I know the job,can anticipate all the orthodontists needs and really feel comfortable now in patients mouths, especially when their parent is there. go for it & good luck!!

Hi, for months now I have been pondering on the idea to go to school for orthodontic assisting. It hasn't always been a dream of mine, but since I have gotten braces on, I feel more and more interested in seeing what the ladies at the office are doing. I am a very organized person, I love having a "set" way of doing things, and I like office work. Also, experiecing all of the joys of having a great smile now makes me want to give this feeling to others. I have a few questions..

What do employers look for in a person who wants to be an assistant?
Is the day physically hard?
Is going to a regular dental school enough to get hired as an ortho assistant?
& how is the pay?

I've done a lot of research, and the info varies. I would like to hear the answers come from a real assistant. Thank you so much!

I have been an assistant for 11 years. It is the best job in the world. It is challenging and rewarding. I love changing people's self confidence. I love the variety. The pay is good too. If you can multi task and are a hard worker it is a good fit.

The job is fine as long as your Dr realizes your an assistant not his slave. After I learned everything, he went from 23 patients a day to 51! His patient intake and fees he made made him double but not my pay. (Thats just one example.) Standing ALL day is no joke either while he sits. BE THE ORTHODONTIST "Not" the assistant. 5 years assistants chairside every side was enough for me.!
