Alright so it appears to me that the paralegal field is dominated by women. How do man fare in this career by comparison? Are they treated like emasculates? What is it about the nature of the work that attracts primarily females? Is it the fact that women are more content to be suboordinate? |

Check out my answer in the other thread. Also, the field is not very high paying when you are talking about supporting a family. That's why it has mostly women. Also, you can never be the boss which can be frustrating to ambitious men and women. And it can be very secretarial feeling. The male paralegals I have worked with have all been very popular employees. Well liked, well regarded. The attorneys like them a lot, too. Being a paralegal involves a lot of box carrying (at least it does in litigation), so if you are physically stronger that helps. |

Women get into "these types of jobs" because most women do not do physical labor jobs. When women look for careers, they look for indoor work, wear nice clothes, nice environment, decent paycheck. The history of paralegal is from secretary (i.e. legal secretary). From the Roman days, as men moved up the social ladder, they took understudies (who were usually men). By the 1900's as those understudies were slaughtered in war (WWI and WWII), more understudies were needed. (If you do research, you will see a lot of women worked in real physical labor during the wars.) So when the war over, men moved up the social ladder, women continued to work - but in the secretarial jobs. As men were accustomed to having women do their dirty work at home - they naturally chose to have women do their dirty work in the work place. This can be confirmed by Clinton having Molly busy under the desk. |
