My 17yr old daughter is interested in becoming a paralegal or legal secretary. She currently is a junior in high school. Can anyone give us information on what we should look for as far as a good program? She would either be attending a school in WA or FL. We are trying to gather information early to be able to make an informed decision on this career option now before she graduates next year. Would a business degree be beneficial & then get a certificate for paralegal? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would just seek a 2 year degree - an Associates degree. If she gets a 4 year degree and then gets a post-bac paralegal certificate - she'll never feel like she is getting paid what she is worth - someone with a bachelors degree. The pay just isn't there. It's like being a teacher - requires a 4 year degree, but the pay isn't that great compared to other people with 4 year degrees. Of course law firms love to require a job applicant to have a 4 year degree and a paralegal certificate, but then will pay them the same or less what they are paying their legal secretaries who only have a high school diploma. It's a weird industry. |
