Ater graduating from Paralegal School, I was temping while looling for my full-time Paralegal job. One assignment was working for a corporation in the legal department..the war room. When I arrived, anther girl was working there. The assignement was easy..Boxes of documents rubber banded with a Table of Contents. We were to put the document behind the tab that corrsponded with the table of contents. Simply put, when you open the binder and attorney needs specific document, he/she looks at table of contents, and if it is document #3, that document should be behind tab #3. So myself and the other girl are putting binders together seperately..ONe day I arrive for work and she is no longer there, so I proceed to do my job. YOU had to pay close attention to the Table of Contents as the packaged documents behind them did not always correspond with the table of contents. An Attorney comes down to get a Binder and he is saying the documents is not there..(where is should be accorking to table of contents) I take a look and see that he is right, tell him I can fix this, I know what I am doing, I did not put that binder together.. Next thing the phone rings and it is the woman in charge of project...She mad, attoney can't find his documents....it's my fault..I explain that someone must be just putting the documents in the binders and not checking that they correspond to table of contents..I know what I am doing and I can fix it...She does not want to hear it..I am FIRED...I needed that temp job and it was easy. |

Then I had another temp legal job..Worked for this attorney for about 1 week...that was all he needed as he was leanving for vacation, and he was in a good mood.
THen I get called back to work for him again..He was working on a brief..The secretary had left the name of the document and how it was titled so I could find it..So I go to retrieve the doucument..which she has listed in WP. It is not there.. So I check the document title under WORD. There it is..I think , great..The secretary had startd typing the brief from the dictaphone...so I't just pick up from there. The attorey must have tried to retreive the brief under WP...and he comes out of his office...It's not there. I say, I know..I found it in WORD..then the madness starts..He starts going crazy..maybe he does not know WORD...He is stressing me out so bad I can't think straight on how to keep the documnet in WORD and copy it into WP...I guess you can copy the WORD brief onto a disk and enter it into WP as well.. He is going so crazy, I am getting frazzled and cont't think it through.. Then another attorney come over, hears all the loud raucous..asks me what is going on..I tell him... So I keep typing the brief, already started by his secretary....hand him some of the pages... More fits..this isn't the way my secretary gives it to me..I say, what's the problem...it's double spaced, you can read it...and the rest of the formating can be cleaned up later..ANd I am not being nice anymore..I have had it with this madness. I just don't care.. He says, why don't you take the afternoon off (i'm fired) and I don't care...Had enough for one morning.. So I say thank you...fill out my time card, get it signed and faxed and want the hell out of there.. |

Attorneys in California are going "nutty" too. I was let go from a job I'd been on for a year in January. They gave me 6 week's severance pay and a glowing letter of recommendation. Supposedly I was let go because they were bringing in someone with a "book of business." I have never heard of secretaries bringing a "book of business," but hey fine. Now 10 months later, I see the same job being advertised again. Before me, they had a series of people who did not know the software programs and couldn't seem to do simple filing. The office was a disaster when I got there. I have some to the conclusion that some attorneys thrive on confusion and lack of organization and cannot function when things are orderly and done corredtly. Also, the longer you are with a firm, they have to raise your salary and provide benefits. |
