I'm currently a Finance major at Florida International University. I will have completed my bachelors within a year. I recently came to a understanding that a bachelors degree has very limited value. There are many unanswered questions and many topics not even touched upon. So to better my finance education I was very interested in learning corporate law(without going to law school), so I started looking around for minors or a certificate in law. But after two weeks on grunt research I was unable to find such a program. Then I was advised my a dear friend to into paralegal studies (certification) and I have been doing so for the past week. So I guess my question is; will the paralegal certificate help my knowlege and make me a better finance manger or a better investment banker, or will I just waste my time and $5000? Or is there any other programs, I could look into? |

No, paralegal studies will not make you a better finance manager or investment banker. Depending on the program curriculum, you may have ONE class in contract/business law. Most of the substantive law is learned on the job. $5k is a lot of money for one class that may have any value to you. Since you still have a year of school left, see if there is a business/corporate/ or contracts law class you can take as an elective. Do not waste your time or money on getting a paralegal certificate if you do not intend to pursue a paralegal career. |

New York University offers a paralegal certificate which is ABA approved. It is a one semester course (5days a week, 6hours a day) the topics offered are basic law and corporate law. NYU is ranked really high just under Yale and Duke. Tuition is about $13,000.

You're the only one who can decide if the investment is worthwhile to you or not. In my opinion, considering what you've stated your career field goals are, I think $13K will be a waste of money for you. I can't imagine an ABA Paralegal Certificate program that is only one semester long. The ABA has strict criteria for credentialing Paralegal programs, and one of those criteria is a specific number of semester hours, much more than the one semester you've indicated here. Also, a Paralegal program curriculum will include more courses than just 'basic law' (whatever that is) and Corporate Law. All the investment, banking professionals I know are doing just fine without any paralegal courses under their belt. I can't imagine how a substantive law course in that area will help you, as non-lawyers cannot give legal advice. Whoever gave you this advice has sent you on a rabbit trail. |

While a paralegal certificate is excellent training, it is geared primarily toward assisting attorneys with practicing law. You don't need a paralegl certificate to be a finance manager. You won't learn enough about corporate law to really help you. You'd be better off taking a college course(s) in corporate law, which you should be able take as electives. Also, you should learn enough of what you need to learn about corporate law OJT. |
