I am preparing to apply for a career in pharmaceutical sales. I will be entering my senior year of college this coming fall. I am wondering how soon can I start applying for jobs? Ideally, I would like to start applying as soon as possible. I am confident I will get hired but I am also realistic in expecting the process to take longer than a week. On the other hand, I obviously cannot accept a job before I finish school. My goal is to have a job lined up following graduation next spring. Any input or questions are welcome. Thanks for your time.

Qualified or aspiring pharmaceutical sales applicants should be familiar with clinical pharmacology, medical terminology, plus rules and regulations for selling pharmaceuticals to effectively sell to healthcare professionals. Applicants who have no previous pharmaceutical sales experience but who have acquired industry sales training, pharmaceutical product knowledge, managed care guidelines plus selling regulations will always be more qualified versus others without it. No successful pharmaceutical sales professional will be successful unless they have to up-to-date pharmaceutical industry education and product knowledge. The NAPSRx provides vocational pharmaceutical sales education (CNPR Certification) that candidates add to their resume to attract pharmaceutical employers and qualify for pharmaceutical sales interviews.

Certification and vocational training programs can only qualify individuals for careers in their prospective industries. Such accredited healthcare certifications as listed above cannot guarantee employment. Certification programs will only match candidates to meet job requirements and qualify them for interviews. Vocational healthcare certification programs at best only employ 70% of their graduates. Graduates from such programs must interview for all positions and possess other personal skills not taught in the educational course, such as: communication skills, professional image, self-motivation, work ethic, etc. If you are considering such a healthcare industry certification program understand that at best you will only qualify for interviews. Certified applicants typically must succeed through a multiple interview process. If you have questions you can contact the U.S. Certification review board.

Work in the healthcare industry is supported by people in a host of related jobs, such as hospital accountants, pharmaceutical sales representatives, doctor's office secretaries and the like. If you include all of these behind-the-scenes players, the healthcare industry will grow from 15.6 million jobs in 2010 to 19.8 million jobs in 2020 - 13% of all jobs. By 2020 we will be spending 1 out of every 5 dollars we earn on healthcare.

The Supreme Court ruling could give the biggest boost to hospitals and health insurers, but drugmakers and biotech companies also will get additional customers because the law requires nearly everyone to have health insurance by 2014 or pay a fine. That's expected to bring coverage to about 30 million more Americans.

With the growing demands to present up to date clinical research and drug efficacy to physicians by the pharmaceutical reps it is extremely important for entry level applicants to get Certified and educated about the industry. It can be easy to be overtaken by fear and trembling if you do not know our industry and the pharmacodynamics behind the products or the biostatistics. Thanks to NAPSRx, the CNPR Certification is up to the challenge of properly training and qualifying individuals for a career in the industry. They made the training process actually enjoyable; but more importantly, a real learning experience.

Due to continued growth in the industry, pharmaceutical companies are looking for qualified candidates that possess industry specific training, such as the CNPR Certification, in order to properly communicate with doctors and physicians.

Another reason that pharmaceutical companies look to hire educated and trained reps is that there is just less time and money devoted towards entry level training. According to Steve Rauschkolb, Associate Vice President of Leadership and Management Development at Sanofi-Aventis, "The most important result of the changing sales structure for pharma firms is a reduction in the amount of training resources that are available to them….It is also going to mean rethinking the structure of the training department to support the new field alignments."

The NAPRx®’s education course is designed to provide the workforce skills necessary to acquire professional caliber positions in the pharmaceutical industry. Students can take the course directly through the NAPRx® by correspondence/online or it can be taken at over 300 colleges and universities (these schools include: Ohio State University, University of Texas, Rutgers University, University of Central Florida, University of Mississippi, Indiana University, University of Colorado etc.)

The United States drug market had sales last year of about $300 billion, with an annual growth rate of 5 percent, IMS said. And if Congress passes new health care legislation, according to a recent Credit Suisse report, could increase drug sales by $10.7 billion.

These revenue targets will drive a need for more experience pharmaceutical sales representatives. Pharmaceutical sales training programs, such as the NAPRx's Certified National Pharmaceutical Representative (CNPR) certification, help to educate individuals trying to break into the field.

The National Association of Pharmaceutical Representatives® (NAPSRx®) has developed the CNPR® Certification program to educate candidates so that they will be able to differentiate themselves from other candidates. The majority of entry level candidates do not know enough about the pharmaceutical industry, drug patents, FDA regulations, CDER regulations, laws governing the pharmaceutical industry, the anatomy, pharmaceutical terms and abbreviations, drug sampling rules, effective physician selling skills, pharmaceutical selling guidelines & regulations, managed care, etc.

Pharmaceutical companies are looking for well trained representatives to promote their products, and handle the potential of sales increase. One reason that pharmaceutical companies prefer industry education and training is because they look to get newly hired candidates quickly out into a sales territory. If the new employee has limited training in pharmacology or the medical field then their training could last many weeks or months. This typically means no physician coverage for the assigned territory of the new employee while they are being trained. Thus the territories market share could be affected the longer it takes to train a new sales rep.

Although many top drugs will lose US patent protection over the next 5 years, sales from new and existing products will more than make up for any lost revenue in coming years. An aging population, particularly baby boomers who demand a better quality of life in retirement, continuing medical breakthroughs, and patient awareness will drive the demand for medication.

The United States drug market had sales last year of about $300 billion, with an annual growth rate of 5 percent, IMS said. And if Congress passes new health care legislation, according to a recent Credit Suisse report, could increase drug sales by $10.7 billion.

The "PROS" of Working in Pharmaceutical Sales Are Explained by PrincetonReview

The Princeton Review announces the PRO's of being a pharmaceutical sales rep. Saying "excessive profit margins of many brand-name pharmaceutical products can mean enormous commissions", many are flocking to take and receive their CNPR Certification.

The Princeton Review, a world renowned college advising website announced the PRO's of becoming a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep. Companies including Novartis, P&G Pharmaceutical, Pfizer, and others , need certified and qualified sales reps. The job includes " talking with pharmacists, hospital personnel, physicians, patient advocacy groups, and even retirement homes, increasing the visibility of their company’s products and the volume of their sales"

Someone who is fast-paced, motivated, and has the right qualifications could stand to make a $98,000 salary, and with many of the top companies paying commission and bonuses, that number could be higher.

Current sales rep say that they love the job because "products are generally consumed fairly quickly and not stored, so old markets rarely disappear; they need regular servicing" meaning that once they've made that connection with the doctor, or hospital personnel, it's hard to sever it.
