Leakena S. in Chicago, Illinois said: I am a 2nd year pre-pharmacy undergraduate student at UIC. In order to become a pharmacist you have to take 2 years of prerequisites at some undergraduate college or university. Then you have to apply again to a graduate school and complete another 4 years. So total is six years in college. But nowaways, considering how competitive pharmacy graduate schools are, 75% of people who wants to get into pharmacy school, get a 4 year degree in something at an undergraduate college to increase their chances of getting into pharmacy school. So if you plan on going that route it would take you 8 years to become a pharmacist. (Thats what I'm doing. I'm want to get a bachelor's degree in biology and then apply to pharmacy school.)
Make sure you know your sciences especially biology and chemistry. Some schools such as UIC pharmacy graduate school require you to take physics as pre-requisites to get into their graduate school. So I say take whatever class that you think you will help you learn more when you have to take it again when you're an undergraduate doing your pre-requisites. Graduate schools only look at your undergraduate grades not your high school grades. They also look at PCAT scores, volunteering activities throughout your undergraduate years, personal statement, and interview. Oh and definately becoming a licensed pharmacy tech is a plus, and and becoming certified is definately a plus for them. It shows that you're really serious in becoming a pharmacist. Hopes this all helps. ^_^

Can anybody here tell me what should I take to be a Pharmacist. I wasn't good at Math, Bio, Chem or Phy. But I'll try my best.

i am also Vietnamese. i am in High school but i know much how to become a pharmacist. the first thing you should try to learning English and learn new vocabulary from anatomy. if you are not good at Math, Bio, Chem, or Phy, you have send your a whole free time to learn them with workbook. when you take Chem course and others you have to focus on them more.i think you can do if you try your best.

HI! I'm an incoming freshman for the class of 2014. I applied to 2 pharmacy schools and I got in, but I'm completely unsure if it will be something I will enjoy studying. I honestly never really liked biology, chemistry, or physics but pharmacy is obviously really practical in terms of future prospects and I know it'll make my parents really happy if I decided to go into pharmacy. I was wondering if I could go to a standard 4 year college and then go to a pharmacy school after for 2 years if I keep up the necessary credits

Hello, I am entering my senior year at my high school in CT.
My schedule is:
AP Psychology
AP Statistics
Honors Physics
Civics
Photography
Journalism II

I have a slight interest in becoming a pharmacist and I was wondering if this a proper course load for considering this career. I am really wondering if I should take AP English as a senior because I took the Junior AP English. Please Help!!!

On my SAT's I got a
550 Reading
610 Math
510 Writing
is this good enough?

I also am not sure whether I want to become one or not so I was wondering if it is okay to go into my freshmen year in college undecided?

for you people in high school or college freshmen its good that you are interested this early but past the pre-reqs courses that pharmacy schools require coursework really doesnt matter at all. if you need a major chemistry is a natural choice.

if you really want to be a pharmacist try to get into a pharmacy as a pharm tech. thats probably the best thing to do to express interest in the profession and get experience. as you'll find out, all this AP stuff wont make any difference other than allowing you to get credit. many people have just winged it right out of college with taking the bare minimum

From what I've heard, in High School you need to take all the science classes you can, especially Chem & Biology. You also need psychology, & need to know how to talk to people. So having good public speaking skills is good.
But, if you go to UB, see you there! I'm a Junior too & want to go for my PharmD, going to UB also :)

No. I do not think pharmacy is that good any more. With the healthcare system is crashing down. Pharmacist you can only work mostly as dispensing or production work. Think and explore other option unless you want to end up with a big loan after pharmacy school and can not find work because most of the retail drug stores now cut down job. That is true and all I can say. Other people might tell you different thing. Think carefully and weigh your risk.

Pharmacy is not that great of a profession any more. Big loan after school and lot of students have hard time find work now because many places cut down hours.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone can help me with my situation. I'm currently a senior and debating whether or not to go straight to U of A since they are the only University in AZ that i can major in pre-pharmacy. Or go start at a community college or start at ASU/NAU for my first 2 years and get a degree in chemistry? or another major related to pharmacy.... don't really know how all that works when i'm taking classes not directly towards pre-pharm and i'm going towards another major like chemistry..... Not too sure on which is the best route to go? ASU was my first choice and U of A (Tuscon) wasn't somewhere i wanted to go. So i wanna know if it's better to start at a University, when i have the gpa and grades to get accepted. So my choice is go straight to U of A OR ASU/Community college such as EMCC or GCC?
