I’m tiring to get in to pharmacy technician field. If I got it correctly it is not necessary to be certified in MI. But still I would like to get certified, because I got the feeling that it would be tiny bit easier to find first job if you are certified (please correct me if I’m wrong).

Could any one suggest some Pharm Tech school in Detroit area (I’m not currently interested in online classes)

Is it realistic to get a job without certificate? If yes where? How?

I do not know if you are going to be able to get a job without a certificate..but you always can try.
If you want to do a pharmacy technician program in Metro Detroit area, my opinion is that you do one that is accredited by ASHP. There are only 3 such schools. Henry Ford Community College, Wayne Community College, Washtenaw Community College. You may take anyone's advice and go to Everest institute, Dorsey school,Oakland Community College, Baker College,...etc, but I think that a change is in the way for pharmacy technicians. I believe that in a few years they will be mandated to have a standardized program that is accredited by ASHP, take the certification through PTCB, and be registered by the state. (Great Britain mandated these requirements in 2007, and Canada if fighting to mandate them in 2008).As a result, should be an increase of pay, and therefore, a good career. Moreover, if you go to one of the above schools, your chances to work in a hospital increase due to the fact that they offer good internships. Moreover, the pay in a hospital is higher due to the fact that you should be able to do IV's and prepare chemotherapy medication.
Good Luck!

There is another option at this time, and you should hurry before the changes occur. That is to take the certification on your own, without going to school. At this time in order to be certified you need a high school diploma, no felony convictions, and a good self study, using one of the review books for PTCB at Amazon.com.

I agree, there is no guarantee of employment after school, who would waste $10,000+ going to school, and still be unemployeed, wait, I would, so i know, dont waste money on going to school.

I just graduated from Kaplan Career Institute in December and frankly it was a waist of 10,000+ dollars. Although my externship was more informative, you are going to be in class teaching yourself and learning everything you need to know out of you coarse material(books for the courses). Most of my experience was in the pharmacy at Rite Aid. I want to work in hospital pharmacy but you have to start somewhere because most hospital pharmacies want you to be certified, it would be helpful at the same time to get your education after High School try a community college to see if your financial aid will cover you expenses loans are not the way to go. Good Luck on your future endeavors.

I actually found in INDIANA atleast, all you need is a Tech in-training license to work in a pharmacy. I got into a large hospital with minimum experience and they will pay for me to get certified, gave me all i need to learn and reimburse you for the certification exam. Pretty good deal.. without school for the cert.

DEFINITELY TRY WALGREENS. THEY WILL PAY FOR YOUR TRAINING IN SPECIAL CLASSES THEY OFFER AND PAY FOR THE TEST. RECENTLY WENT FOR AN INTERVIEW AT WALGREENS EVEN WITHOUT CERTIFICATION IN INDIANA THEY START AT 9.50 AN HOUR THEN WHEN YOU PASS THE TEST ITS UP TO 10.00 HOURS. GOOD PLACE TO START AND GET ECP. THEN MOVE TO HOSPITAL OR HOMEHEALTH CARE THATS WHERE THE MONEY IS. THIS WAY YOU'LL SAVE ABOUT 10 GRAND IN SCHOOL. THE PAY FOR TECHS IS NOT HIGH ENOUGH TO SPEND THAT KIND OF MONEY LET RETAIL RX'S DO THAT FOR YOU. I KNOW SOME TECHS IN INDIANA HOSPITAL OR HOME HEALTH THAT ARE MAKING ABOUT 16-17 AN HOUR WITH EXPERIENCE. GOOD LUCK

I think that you better look for an accredited school because if this bill will pass, there are going to be major changes for the profession:

Federal Legislation for Tech Standards Introduced

U.S. Reps. Steven C. LaTourette (R-OH) and Stephen F. Lynch (D-MA) have introduced sweeping federal legislation that will mandate training, education, registration and certification requirements for pharmacy technicians nationwide.

`Subpart XI--Pharmaceutical Technicians

`SEC. 340H. STATE PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNICIAN REGISTRATION PROGRAMS.

`(a) Grants- The Secretary of Health and Human Services may make grants to States to establish and implement a pharmaceutical technician registration program described in subsection (b).

`(b) Registration Program Description- A pharmaceutical technician registration program described in this subsection is a program under which--

`(1) the State prohibits an individual from performing the duties of a pharmaceutical technician in such State unless the individual is registered by the State Board of Pharmacy to perform such duties; and

`(2) as minimum requirements for such registration, the State requires the individual--

`(A) to have attained a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent;

`(B) to be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board; and

`(C) to have--

`(i) attained an associate's degree in pharmacy technology;

`(ii) completed a course of training for pharmaceutical technicians accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists; or

`(iii) graduated from a school of pharmacy recognized by the
