Claudia C., It depends on your state law. Check your state's Board of Pharmacy's website. In Texas, you are not required to have an associates degree and you can still study & test on your own. Texas recognizes the PTCB test and then you have to register with the state. |

It depends on who is doing the hiring and if they really need to fill the position.

Claudia in Monterey Park, CA - I read the requirements for Pharm Tech in CA (California Business and Professions Code section 4202). To be qualify for a Pharm Tech, you only need to meet 1 of the 4 method you mentioned. So study and be certified (i.e get the license) and you're on your way to be a Pharm Tech. Good luck! |

Well, if you are real smart you don't need to spend thousands of dollars( in this economy save your money, trust me you will need it we are in the Greater Depression of 2009, millions of people will soon be out of work) on a pharmacy technician course( a pharmacy technician course will not make you a better candidate for the pharmacy technician job) all you have to do is buy one book that is modeled on the PTCB.org National Certification Test,(tho goal is to find a book that covers all the material(from pharmacy law to solving complex calculations) on the National PTCB test at www.ptcb.org . what websit do you use for the registration after you have passed the ptcb exam |

Actually I did attend a pharmacy technician certificate program at my local community college and I do, in fact, recommend that someone should possibly pursue that direction based on the fact that if you were to just go buy the book and take the certification exam, you miss out on the hands-on experience that could possibly give you an advantage over someone who just received the certification;however,if you currently have the experience from working in a retail or hospital pharmacy, it would benefit you more just by studying for the exam yourself. |

This career path is not worth all the time and money you will invest. Seriously, you will thank me for this one day. According, to where you posted from I assume you live in California. I know living costs are high in that state. As with any career/job, make sure you are actually going to enjoy the job itself before dedicating your life to it. Anyone with enough brains could go to school for a high paying job but you're going to have to like the job in order to be happy with it.Would a salesman by nature really enjoy being a doctor? Probably not. So spend time evaluating yourself to see what suits you best. |

moi in Bloomfield, New Jersey said: hello it depends what field of pharmacy you work in. If you are in a retail pharmacy, you should not expect more than $12.00 at the highest (in the houston area). if you go into a hospital setting, which I love! it will be a little more. If you are looking to make good money in the pharmacy tech world, you need to pay your dues at a retail and hospital pharmacy and try and gain all the knowledge you can and then seek a speciality job... such as a PBM or some type of administration. Speciality type of setting will be $20.00 per hour plus! Hope this helps! I did just what I mentioned above, and now I have a great job with wonderful benefits and leadership and really good pay! |

It may help in some cases yes, or it may be unnecessary. Can I get just a few more pros & Cons please.

In most retail pharmacies such as a CVS/Pharmacy, Walgreen’s, etc its common for them to train their cashiers to fill the open positions as pharmacy technicians within a retail pharmacy. In most cases most front store cashiers probably make $1.00 less than their pharmacy technician counterparts. However, the real opportunities for pharmacy technicians are in the hospital setting and not in the retail setting. That’s the biggest problem for most newbie pharmacy technicians to comprehend. Becoming certified and having pharmacy technician experience within a hospital setting is critical when it comes to working in a hospital pharmacy setting. Certification will be a requirement in some states as of 2010 in order to work as a pharmacy technician such as Florida. Check with your local state board of pharmacy for more specifics. Most certified pharmacy technicians, who do not possess pharmacy technician experience within a hospital setting usually, obtain this by volunteering within the hospital pharmacy. The majority of hospital pharmacies will not hire you without pharmacy technician certification and having at least 1 – 2 years of hospital pharmacy technician experience. Also, the starting wages and benefits for a hospital pharmacy technician are much better than retail. Unfortunately, this is the sad reality of this profession. You don’t need to take anymore classes for this profession because most of the training will be on the job. You just have to pass the national PTCE Exam in order to become certified. If you sign up for a pharmacy technician course unless it awards an associate degree with transferable college credits it’s not worth it. |
|
brown_dude_CPhT in West Roxbury, Massachusetts 24 months ago |
The pharmacy technician course that you are considering taking will just be an introduction to the pharmacy technician career field that’s about it. They don’t teach you anymore than you can learn by yourself by opening a book specifically geared to passing the national pharmacy technician certification exam and studying for it. The book I used to pass the exam was Delmar's Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam Review by Patricia K. Anthony you can find a free preview of the book on Google books by clicking the link provided below. books.google.com/books?id=fhd2Q8ANlZAC&printsec=frontcover&dq=delmar's+pharmacy+technician+certification+exam+review&cd=1#v=onepage&q=delmar's%20pharmacy%20technician%20certification%20exam%20review&f=false Retail pharmacy and hospital pharmacy are two very different paths to take when becoming a pharmacy technician. I would advise you to stay away from the retail pharmacy environment. Due to the fact that there is a lot of potential for abuse specifically from rude customers and pharmacists who are self absorbed and under the delusion they are human Gods because they possess a Pharm.D degree. -Good Luck |

Anyone who wants to be a Pharmacist Technician in California should try Harbor Occupational Center in San Pedro. If you do it full time you finish in about 4 months. You pay less than 1,000 dollars including to get your liscense,uniform,books.. I have two other friends that have tried it and already have jobs at a Walgreens and get paid 13.95 an hour. They are on a waiting list for a hospital & that starts you at 20 dollars an hour.. Good luck! |

Do you think a registered nurse would be able to pass the exam without studying? |
|
brown_dude_CPhT in Boston, Massachusetts 23 months ago |
pgalicki in Sugar Land, Texas said: Do you think a registered nurse would be able to pass the exam without studying? The best advice I can give is never, never, never go into any examination facility without being prepared for the examination or else you are just wasting your valuable time and money. I am strongly for researching any examination thoroughly and finding the right study materials to prepare you for successful passing any standardized examination. For every exam there is usually a comprehensive book that has been written to prepare exam takers for this task. You just have to know were to find the correct study materials and this can take a lot of trial and error and the study materials that worked for me might not work for you. Each individual’s approach to preparing for this exam is different. Last time I checked the fee for the national pharmacy technician certification exam (PTCE) was $129.00 U.S and in this economy that’s a lot of money to throw away due to poor preparation for the exam. For more info on this exam click here:www.ptcb.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Help&Template=/CM/HTMLDisplay.cfm&ContentID=3051#Pharmacy_Exam In conclusion, because you are an R.N doesn’t necessarily mean you will pass the national PTCE on your first attempt. Do not take this examination without studying for it. Make sure you know what material is covered on the examination, find a book/program that comprehensively covers the examination, study for it and then go sit for the exam. -Good Luck |

Do you think that the automated robotic dispenser will take over pharmacy techs position and or jobs? Why or Why not? |
|
brown_dude_CPhT in Boston, Massachusetts 22 months ago |
Lingo in Waterford, Michigan said: Do you think that the automated robotic dispenser will take over pharmacy techs position and or jobs? Why or Why not? No, I don’t think the automated pharmacy dispensing systems currently in use such as ScriptPro will replace the pharmacy technicians anytime soon, unless some company specifically designs some kind of artificial intelligence pharmacy system that is able to fill itself and authenticate prescriptions accurately without human assistance. We are still a long way from an advanced artificial intelligent pharmacy dispensing system which completely phases out the human resource. However, pharmacy technicians will still be needed to perform the grunt work, by this I mean filling the automated pill dispenser bins manually, cleaning the machines, replacing the prescription labels within the machine, etc. Nevertheless some pharmacist’s may consider some task’s within the pharmacy too menial and time consuming , such as answering the phones, ringing the cash register, manually entering prescriptions into the computer system and might rely on the pharmacy technician’s to perform those tasks. Moreover, due to advances in technology retail pharmacy is changing from a more peopled retail pharmacy environment to an automated store as human resources are being phased out and replaced by smart registers, self check-out, etc where you the customer ring your own transactions and swipe a credit card for payment. |
|
brown_dude_CPhT in Boston, Massachusetts 22 months ago |
It’s only a matter of time before customers walk into a pharmacy and an advanced interactive computer system will process your prescriptions, but that’s probably at least 15 – 20 years down the line. Furthermore machines are not perfect they tend to break down frequently and they don’t stock their pill dispensers bins by themselves so you will always need individuals to service the machines as well as manually clean automated pill dispensers. I worked at a CVS/Pharmacy that featured a ScriptPro automated pill dispenser machine which allowed the pharmacy to speed up the process of prescriptions. By this I mean the pharmacy technicians assisted the processing of 600 – 1000 prescriptions daily and had it not been for the ScriptPro machine the prescriptions coming into the pharmacy would have been backed up beyond belief. ScriptPro definitely smoothed the efficiency of the pharmacy to process so many prescriptions on a day to day basis. So in this situation pharmacy technicians will always be needed to perform the menial tasks within a retail pharmacy as the pharmacist’s role will shift to an emphasis on accurate prescription verification, counseling the customers/patients in regards to the proper use of the medication, designing a regime for effective medication usage. -Good Luck |

i just wanted to say pharmacy techs are worth alot more then the low pay b.s. i have went to diff forums, i live in GA when you go for surgical tech training here in GA right after you get out of school. you only make $13.00 buck an hour here. let me give ya'll guys the run down!!! THIS IS STARTING PAY IN GA ....< SURGICAL TECH... $13.00> <DENTAL AND ORTHODONTIC ASSISTANT BETWEEN $14.00 AND 15.00>...< DIALYSIS TECH $ BETWEEN $11.00 AND $12.00>....<PHLEBOTOMIST TECH $11.00> PHARMACY TECH BETWEEN $9.00 AND $14.00> ..<MEDICAL ASSISTANT $12.00>....<PATIENT CARE TECH..$ 11.00> I JUST WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW HOW LOW THE PAY IS FRO THESE CAREERS .. IF YOUR'E IN THESE CAREERS MAKE A STAND ASK FOR MORE MONEY !!! THESE JOBS COMING RIGHT OUT OF SCHOOL SHOULD PAY $15.00 ABOVE!!!!!! |
|
pgalicki in Sugar Land, Texas 21 months ago |
Kristen in GA: the reason the pay for these jobs is what it is, is because they don't require much education or skill to do them. phlebotmist pays $11.00/hr? well, physicians make in the 6 figures per year. There is a HUGE difference in the educations of a phlebotomist and an MD. Same goes for a pharmacy tech vs a pharmacist. a dental assistant vs a dentist, etc etc. If you want to make more money, get more education. Become a pharmacist instead of a pharmacy tech. Become a nurse instead of a phlebotomist. Become a dental hygienist instead of a dental assistant. |
