It looks like the Richland program is out of commission.. their website is not updated for 2009. I've found several websites that offer stuff but it would require me to travel to Houston or San Antonio to get the hands on training. I've read about weekend or 3-day courses that you can take?? But I can't find any information on those, anyone please help?

My training and experience for the past 5 years is solely retail. Would the hospitals train or certify in IV even if you are not an employee ? .

That is right in my situation, I did volunteer in a hosital and asked
the supervisor regarding this, they said they don't have any plan to
train the people who are not an employee.

But I heard some hospitals may train the people, If they need IV technicians, Good luck

The best way to become I.V certified is simply to sign up for a 1 year certificate phlebotomy course at a local community college. Upon completing the course you will have gained the knowledge and skills to become a phlebotomy/ i.v certified technician within a community hospital.

The majority of these community college programs offer some kind of clinical internship within a hospital during your training session, drawing blood and preparing total parenteral nutrition packets (TPNs).

You can add the phlebotomy/i.v certification along to your CPhT on your resume once you complete the program and that should take care of the I.V certification requirement. I sometimes think that this certified pharmacy technician career is a strange pathway for some individuals to enter the nursing career field.

Due to the lack of formal training in most states to become a pharmacy technician and also the low-pay. Your next step up might be enrolling in nursing school in order to command a decent wage in this economy.

-Good Luck

Hi! I am currently a CPhT, and I am kind of interested in becoming IV certified in order to add to my resume, and my applications to pharmacy schools here in the fall. I was wondering how much it might cost, and where to get started if it is something that is within my budget. Thanks!

The best way to become I.V certified is train as a Phlebotomy Technician.

Try a local community college that offers a 1 year course that teaches phlebotomy.
Phlebotomy is the back door way to becoming I.V certified. Also, phlebotomy credentials look good on a CPh.T resume.

-Good Luck

Christie in San Antonio, Texas said: I teach an IV Course in San Antonio.
This course is supplemented online and is for registered pharmacy technicians. We offer it through the University of Houston and it is an accredited ACPE course which will be important for hospitals or compounding pharmacies to know as it is what is recognized as a standard in the United States.

Christie

I've inquired about this course twice before - I believe you are omitting information when you advertise about this course. There has to be a minimum of so many students enrolled, the students have to pay for your travel expenses along with the course fee, and classes are usually held at hotel conference rooms. All in all, it turned out to be A LOT more than $450.00. www.pharmacytechnician.org offers classes for anyone in or around Houston.

Hi thanks for your comment.

I believe I make every effort to let students know up front what I do. I do travel to different cities and have certified students this way as well. You have to understand that I do not work for free. It costs money for me to travel, find a place to conduct business and supplies. For this reason I no longer teach the IV Course. If you are in San Antonio I can train you. I have many students who have taken the course and have certified and weere satisfied. All in all it is a success. Thanks Good luck to you and all.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is considering offering a new certification program in IV admixture as well as continuous testing
Dec 11, 2007
Drug Topics Daily News

Certified technicians who want to move up the career ladder may have a new option open to them in the future. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is considering setting up a certification program in IV admixture, now that the U.S. Pharmacopeia has finalized its Chapter 797 clean room standards. That's one thing Melissa Murer Corrigan, CEO of PTCB, revealed at the ASHP midyear meeting in Las Vegas last week. Another plan PTCB is mulling is to offer continuous certification testing, rather than holding tests only on certain days, she added. This will offer technicians greater convenience in taking the test.

How can i take advantage of testing or certification
any body can send me email gwpharmacy@yahoo.com
i want to get a job to get busy in life in the Hosp. I have Electronic enginnering backgrpund I can cope with school and the certification tests. all i haveto do is take ptcb.org test and find where is iv certification is given.
kindly any one with due respect guide me how to get iv and compounding Certifications to land on the job market to by pass retail stores.
i have to work for retail sector to get state certification or there is any other way like certifications from the board.

I want to know what books thaey assign you so that I can read them and take the test, also where do I take the test.

Christine in Dallas said: I have 1 week left of the Pharm Tech I program at Richland College in Dallas and I DO NOT RECOMMEND the program. This is the Community Pharmacy Program. This is more of a PTCB review program and you could easily purchase books and study at home and save a lot of time and money. When you attend an information session prior to enrolling, they will tell you the classes will provide lots of hand-on learning. NOT TRUE! We had 2 class periods of "hands-on" learning and during those classes we couldn't even complete some of our labs due to the fact the materials had not been ordered. The class was too large so we weren't shown how to compound, we were just given written instructions and told to do it. Our entire class has voiced several concerns/complaints to the instructor, the Program Director as well as the Dean and nothing has been resolved. We're about to start our externship and there are only a couple who are continuing on to the Institutional Pharmacy program at Richland. There are a handful of us who are looking into Sterile Solutions, and other IV Certification courses. The majority of the class is just ready to get out of there.
