However, it seems very hard to get hired at a pharmacy without experience except in a retail setting such as CVS/Pharmacy, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, etc. Trust me you don't want to work in a retail establishment. Very similiar to working at McDonalds. You take orders, fill orders, answer phones, ring the cash register and perform drive thru service.

Most people volunteer at a local hospital in order to get the 2 year experience requirement out of the way. But keep in mind in this bad economy nobody wants to work 2 years without a salary.

Hey brown dude, I have an associates degree in pharmacy and I just passed the PTCE. Now do I need to get licensed? If so how? My state is Michigan. Should I go to my nearest Michigan works or what?

brown_dude34 in Hyde Park, Massachusetts said: In most cases the courses you will take at a community college or vocational school will not help you pass the national pharmacy technician exam. Passing the national pharmacy technician exam requires you study from a book or a program of study that specifically is geared to passing the test.

Furthermore, in order to obtain a pharmacy technician license in the state of Massachusetts you don’t need a formal education.

At some point possibly after 2010 in order to be a pharmacy technician in the state of Massachusetts you must pass the national pharmacy technician exam. Some states such as Florida have already adopted this policy. Massachusetts at this time has not. As certification becomes the standard in order to receive a license.

Keep in mind those certificate programs are basically an introduction to pharmacy technician career field. You might as well sign up for the pharmacy technician course at the community college.

Good Luck

Every bit of information you have written in all your posts is correct! It's great that you have taken the time and energy to help out people. Bottom line, folks, is that most states DO NOT REQUIRE a diploma or certificate from a training school - just a HS diploma or GED. You need to pass the PTCB exam (self-study is acceptable if you are disciplined), and you can obtain tons of study materials for this exam online. And then you use your PTCB certification to get a pharmacy tech license in your own state - IF that is what your state requires!!! Please check with your state's pharmacy board for their requirements!

As of now I've been trying to look for a job....I don't know if they will consider me coz i don't have any work experience here in the US. ABout the exam just review your calculation and the Laws here in the US...try to review the Delmar review for pharm tech.

I took a pharmacy technician class that required a 240+ of class hours. I passed my final but my overall grade was a 75% and for me to qualify for an externship and a license i needed to pass with an 80% or higher so they failed me. This class was $2,000! Should i take a cheaper online class again or should i go on and take my national instead?

Please don't get down on yourself. It has been over 15 months since I got my license and still nothing has came out of it. If you have a resume you can mention that you have 240hrs of course work. In the meanwhile you can apply as a pharmacy service representative/assistant/clerk (no license required). Just mention that you have 240hrs course work so they know you're aware of sigs and all the other material (that's you'll never need to know anyways). You can also mention that you are studying for the exam. If you pass the national exam (which I hear is not difficult) you will be national certified which will help you a lot more than being just state certified. Also if you pass the national exam it will be the same as taking a course which is why people say not to take a course (wish I knew that). Some places won't interview you unless you are nationally certified. I might as well not have a license cause it's been impossible to get an interview. So now I'm applying for pharmacy clerk positions also cause no one will hire a pharm tech w/o experience. I have a Bachelor's degree but that doesn't help (at all). Can you tell that i'm quite aggravated? I'm going to apply to whatevers left then I'm just gonna toss this scam of a career out the window. Seriously this "career" is a scam and a joke. There's 100 unemployed licensed techs for every 1 job opening. Sounds like a scam to me. Well at least those schools got their money back for those ads they aired every other commercial over 1,000x a day per channel. I'd rather work at an office anyways. At least they get weekends off.
