I am trying to return to the phlebotomy field. I have a year and a half hospital experience, and 7 years of vet phlebotomy experience(yes, animals...now that was a challenge). I am a hardstick specialist and spent alot of time in the ER. I found out the hard way I am not cut out for trauma situations. I have been in retail management for the last several years and hate the hours and stress. I am concidering Talecris. I am hoping the stress level will be lower than that of a hospital setting. Anyone have any info on this company. Policies and procedures, pay scale, dress codes, benefits, work settings...etc. I have done several internet searches but not much comes up. |

Okay you guys it is really hard. I finished school and started immediately @ a hospital an hour away from where i lived at. I was called by a supervisor @ another hospital to work for them (only through friends who worked at the current hospital i was working at). I went to work for them due to increase pay. I quit for a year (had baby) then of course went back to work at the hospital that i first work at. Yes, all places work you like a dog. I hated being the only one putting up with the boss's favorites or the lazy ones who sent you to do all the work period. I changed my way of thinking b/c that was the only way i was going to be appreciated. It wasn't my co-workers who ever appreciated me, it was my patients. Yes I called them my patients b/c they were the only ones who cared and I took care of them as far as drawing their blood, so in my eyes, they became my patients and they like that i treated with great no matter how my co-workers treated me and i used that to my advantage. It is the patients who know how crappy the medical field can be. I treated them with the upmost respect and that made me feel great. I relied on them for strength a lot of times.

Hello Everyone, I live in Atlanta, Ga. Considering going to school this summer for Phlebotomy. Do you know of any good schools in Atlanta that offers Phlebotomy courses? Also, how long does it take to complete these courses? Sometime ago I saw an advertisement online ( I don't remember the name of the school) that offered courses that you can complete in as little as 5 weeks. Is that true? Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you. |

Try the American Red Cross they will hire you with no experience you just need to have completted a clinical, have your cert and your own transportation.Quest diagnostics will not hire you to draw without experience however they will hire you as a speciemen processor.Try some doctors offices or imaging and diagnotic offices.I had the same problem a currently work at a diagnotic and imaging office(they do x-rays,sonograms,mammograms ect.),some of them draw blood. It took me over a year to find a job in this feild.Try not to get discarraiged and if any and I mean any position in this feild opens up take it to get your foot in the door, regardless of money and hours.I hope your blessing comes soon keep us posted. |

And are you saying that you had no prior phlebotomy training but was able to talk your way into a position? The practice of hiring just anyone to be trained on the job, when there are already plenty of extensively trained and certified phlebotomists who are having trouble finding work, should not be encouraged. Brianna in Fayetteville, North Carolina said: I am currently looking for a phlebotomy position. I just graduated from school and have not yet taken the ASCP exam. I hope to take it soon though. As far as phlebotomy positions in other areas I can be of some assistance. There is a company called Talecris. They have a few openings in Texas but they won't become available until June I think. If anyone is interested their website is www.talecrisplasma.com They usually hire students right out of school and sometimes hire people who have never had any education in this field. Good luck to all. HA HA HA HA good luck at talacris i was the team lead there in the fayetteville branch when they first opened it but got so stressed out from the people there while in training in illinois i quit....good luck |

For anyone looking for a Phlebotomy job in Fayetteville, NC. Try Quest Diagnostics. Talk to Elaine Heath @ 910-762-5137. If she asked how you got this number just tell her that someone who works for Quest gave you this number. I believe she has an opening. If she doesn't, she will be straight up honest with you. Good luck. |

How far is the local Red Cross? They do hire people right out of school, the only thing is that you have to travel in your own car and the hours are sporatic. |

Hello, I just happen to run across this website. I'm very impressed with what has been said. I too, am going to school in August to obtain my Phlebotomy & EKG Certificate. I recently obtained my CNA certificate and I wanted to add to my skills. I enjoy working with people. I'm looking forward to working in the field. The school that I will be attending has placement assistance. The ratio of placement is 90%. I did my research of schools and found this school to be a good place to attend. I wish everybody luck in the field. Hopefully I will be able to find something quickly. Best wishes to all!!! |

The bads habits were, not using gloves, recapping needles, not putting names on tubes, drawing the wrong tubes, not washing hands and so on.

Just a question for you experienced Phlebos....I am on the waiting list for LPN and was thinking about taking the phleb course while I'm waiting. Is this a good idea or will I learn all the phleb stuff once I'm in the program for the LPN? Thanks!! |

that would be cool if u had money to blow but y do that when u r going to learnbit in the nursing coarse trust me I know. U r going to need that extra money on books, uniforms, clinical requirements, and trying to study and pay for ur licsence. |

But it's ALWAYS a good thing to know how to do properly because from what I have heard, some nursing programs just skim over the basics in phlebotomy. |

Omg!!! I must say am impressed that u buckled down and got them kudos!!!! The fact that u did it at a early age show that u r responsible u r dedicated and down the road when years add up its going to look good say I have x years of experience. companies r not suppose to discriminate on ur age but some do they might say its for another reason but they do. So I say give it at shot anyway putting out resumes look for summer positions volenteering so u can have them as a reference on your resume keep ur head up and don't give up. I have been a stay at home mom for the past 18 years. I need to work now but don't want to work in retail or office setting. I'd like more of a hands on type job, and something where I could make a difference in someone elses life. I am considering going to school for phlebotomy certification. At 50, however, I am wondering if I will have a problem getting hired in this field. I appreciate any advice. |

At 50, however, I am wondering if I will have a problem getting hired in this field. Congrats to you, MYKat for making a life changing decision! After being a Cosmetologist for 25 years, I've just completed my Phlebotomy course in April and yes, even though I was the 3rd oldest in my class (46) I did just fine! It was a great experience for me and with encouragement from my family and friends, I'm glad I went through with it. It's taking me a while to get a job here in Tennessee, but this seems true everywhere in the US with the economy ?Recession? being the way it is. I'm volunteering with the American Red Cross as a Licensed Hospital Volunteer right now and just signed up as a Collection Tech/Phlebotomist and hope to start my paid career there. Yes, I've been on several interviews, (4) and have my resume in several places (16)and put the great advice here to use, but I don't think my age had anything to do with any of the rejections. Those who responded stated they wanted someone with 1-2 years experience. So, with this in mind I remain confident in my ability as a great Phlebotomist, and when the right job comes, I'll be ready! All in all I say...GO FOR IT! Good luck in school and your future endeavors! |

Hello Everyone, I completed the program years ago, and I never found a job actually doing phlebotomy. I live in Chicago, and they require 1 year of experience everywhere out here. I will be starting school for Nursing in 2009, after working in the mortgage industry soon to be laid off, I have to get into a career that is stable. I have always had a love for working with people especially hands on care with the elderly. Does anyone know how I can get some hands-on experience in Chicago? Hospitals, clinics, schools, etc..? I called American Red Cross and they said they do not allow inexperienced individuals to volunteer anymore. I have also worked as a CNA, just never drawing blood. Please help. |

I currently work as a lead phlebotomist in southern california at Labcorp, it is difficult to get into a phlebotomy job, just apply everywhere you can, I am very new to phlebotomy, just under 8 months, and i am already the lead at my site. As for Labcorp, just apply for all jobs online www.labcorp.com (any that are near your area) becuase turing in a resume will get you no where. Also try dialisis centers, they use phlebotomists too. My job is super stressful, and it takes up most of my life, tread lightly, you dont get paid that much, and work 12 hour days, a dr. or dialisis center would prob be a better bet. |
