Sarah in Soldotna, Alaska said: You should be proficient in phlebotomy, drug testing, strep testing, paternity test, ABG. You should also have a handle on medical terminology and meditech. Also make sure when turning in an application you have a current first aid and cpr, and type 40 wpm without errors. I work in AK and they tend to pay between 12-18 an hour depending on experience. If you work a year as a phlebotomist and you dont have a license you can challenge the test. She is correct you must be profecient in all fields

How can I get this experience if nobody want to give me this chance? I enjoy drowing bllod, and I would like to start a creer in Clinical Laboratory. you should find a plasma center or somewhere like the american red cross they usually dont mind if you dont have experience sticking, but they will get u some experience. |

Could you explain in detail all that goes on with learning something like this with online courses? I have always been curious about it. What exactly is taught, and how do you do the actual blood drawing practice,do you go to the school for that and is it a LOT of practice before clinicals start? |

The work is demanding but the pay is well worth it! I make $35-40 hrly as a traveling tech ( I work for 6 months and then take 3-4 months off at a time, how great is that?!). Hi Kimberlynn, thank you!! I have been in such a limbo and contemplating a decision on a new career choice, coming from the mortgage industry...I have always considered Ultra sound or Phlebotomy, the only experience I have is medical records as well. I think that is why your comment caught my eye. I also live in California. How would I get started in this field? Im a single mom and dont have a lot of money? srmata@yahoo.com "thank you" |

Shelby in Georgetown, Texas said: Then apparently you shorted your students. I have drawn kiddos to rest homes and healthy to on their death bed. I think you are both wrong. And on top of all that a book can only teach so much and a clinical is all as good as what you get to stab. I have rode the horse and then some. I am not just a phlebotomist, an EMT-I and in nursing school. Phlebotomy is not the high tech oh so special art form that you are making it out to be. You either get it or you don't. There is no big cover up or immpossible gimme that is taught. 1. Find vein by touch 2. Test vein how does it feel, is it strong or weak?? 3. Hold position, anchor if you will 4. Fast but gentle poke. Do I really need to continue?!?!? This is by far the easiest medical procedure. CPR is failed more!! If it is that easy then why did you leave your job @ Prolab? you had a very good shift working at night getting paid for miles and hours what happened? i did a lil research on ya and from what i understand u just complained all the time and you took off with their supplies!!!so i ask if it's so easy, then y aren't you still doing it? |

Jenn-Read all the phlebotomy forums on this site and all the advice that is given. Try the usual avenues at first, applying at blood banks and the easier to get into plasma banks. There are many in PA. Don't pass up anything if the wages are low and it's a far drive. What counts is getting experience. Don't do all your applying online or in your county only. Go to the work sites and ask to speak to the lab boss. They can tell you if they need more help. Always do follow up calls to any job you apply at. If you have it in you,be pushy. There's LabCorp and Quest but these are not easy companies to get into. LabCorp is always hiring and Quest is hard to apply to on their site. After 6 months and if nothing is coming your way you need to get in contact with your instructors or the program director and ask for their help. These people know the directors of labs and who is hiring so don't let them get away with not helping you when they can. They know who their good students were and can make a recommendation. I regret that I initially didn't ask for help from my school but I was too embarrassed to. I only know what the exam is like for ASCP and AMT. Of the two,ASCP is more recognized but was a more difficult test. Get a test preview book to help. Take the test as soon as you can while the stuff is still fresh in your head. |

No offense but you may want to work on your spelling and grammar. If you cant effectively communicate with a potential employer how are you going to communicate with patients or fill out parperwork etc. Hospitals dont want to open themselves up to any more liability than they have to. Good Luck. Steve |
