I FOUND A SCHOOL FOR PHLEBOTOMY TRAINING IT WAS FOR 9 WEEKS, AND ONLY ON MONDAYS. I FINISHED THE COURSE IN NOVEMBER '06. AS SOON I GOT MY CERTIFICATE THE HOSPITAL GOT RID OF THE LAB PEOPLE AND HIRED AN OUTSIDE MAJOR HOSPITAL. WHEN THOSE GIRLS CAME IN I ASKED THEM WHO THEY WORKED FOR AND THEIR SUPERVISORS #. I JUST KEPT CALLING VERY POLITELY, MAYBE ABOUT ONCE A WEEK TELLING THEM THAT I WAS ALREADY A TECH THEIR AND I JUST FINISHED SCHOOL AND I HAD NO EXPERIENCE, JUST IN CLASS ON EACH OTHER. BUT I WAS WILLING TO EVEN DO VOLUNTARY WORK, SO I COULD GET THAT UNDER MY BELT. AFTER ABOUT 4 1/2 MONTHS I ALMOST GAVE UP. THE SUPERVISOR CALLED ME IN FOR AN INTERVIEW I TOLD HER I WAS ALREADY CNA CERTIFIED, AND THE HOSPITAL I WORKED AT TRAINED ME TO BE A MENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN, AND I WAS NOT SCARED TO STICK THEM. I WAS SO ANXIOUS, JUST BECAUSE I TOLD MY CO-WORKERS THAT THOSE GIRLS WOULD BE ME ONE DAY.SHE TOLD ME I GOT THE JOB! MAKING $16/HR, I STARTED IN MAY '07, TRAINED FOR 3 WEEKS, GOT 3 DAYS OFF & SHE TOLD ME I WOULD BE ON MY OWN STARTING SUNDAY. I ALMOST POOPED MY PANTS. I HAD TO PRINT LABELS, SORT BY FLOOR LEARN HOW TO DO DIFFICULT STICKS ON MY OWN,SPIN, BAG, LABEL URINE, STOOL & WOUND COULTURES ALL ALONE. I NOW WORK IN THE LAB BY MYSELF, NO CO-WORKERS, OR SUPERVISORS REMEMBER I WORK AT A HOSPITAL THAT HIRED PHLEBS FROM ANOTHER HOSPITAL. IF I NEED HELP I HAVE TO CALL THE OTHER HOSPITAL, IF I GET AN ANSWER. I EVEN HAVE TO CALL AN ANSWERING MACHINE TO LET THEM KNOW IM DONE. MY HOURS ARE 5:30am TO 10:30am IF IM RUNNING LATE I HAVE TO CALL THE COURIER SERVICE FOR A PICK UP TIME. SO ALL IN ALL GO FOR IT I LLLOOOVVEE IT! I am having a difficult time finding a phlebotomy program in the philadelphia area. Where did you go to school? |

Hi EB, I checked out the program requirements online and the one I'm most concerned about is the personal health insurance requirement. I'm a diabetic and have hypertension, which are both controlled with medication and exercise (I run and cycle), but I've been unable to get or afford health insurance. Will the program work with me to help me find a health insurance provider who will accept folks with pre-existing conditions that is also affordable? I'm part-time at work, so not eligible for insurance through them, either. When I was in nursing school in the 1980s, the program provided students with a student insurance program, but I think it was just liability insurance, not health insurance. |

The wage depends on your experience, around $18-22 per hour, comes with a company car, gas card, american express for travel, visa for supplies to complete the job, the average apt.1 bed in Portland,Or is 5-6 hundred. You can always call Sandyia in the recruting office at Quest Diagnostics in Seattle,Wa thats there main office for the Northwest. Quest is the largest or next to the largest laboratory in the United States East Coast is the corporate headquarters. So go online and see if they have anything in your area if you don't want to move |

I can tell you guys that if you are in Texas your schools for Sonographer/Ultrasound is extremely limited!! Unless you feel like paying more and taking more classes thru a college, the school in Houston has been reviews. I do know that. I looked in to doing it myself. Looking into nursing. More of a need and more pay. :) |

For one thing,it just pushes many of those who did receive the proper,in depth training and certification further away from getting a job. It also cheapens the science and art of phlebotomy, which is too important and complex to be learned properly in a weekend training session. A good program should last a semester, about 16 weeks, with at least 8 weeks of clinicals. |

Because how were you able to get a job doing that in CA without certification? Certification costs less than $100. Once the paperwork is sent into the certifying agency it will take maybe a month of waiting for the exam date. There is no grant to cover it. You need to talk to your supervisors and coworkers about the certification laws in your state. |

Nor should the training be a semester long. There is nothing that was missed, skipped or left untouched. It was a 2 day course, however we learned hands-on and not from a book. We had arms to practice and even practiced on each other and our instructors. I propose the question to you, have you ever attended on of these training courses?? |
|
Vicci in Johnson City, Tennessee 10 months ago |
I beg to differ with the respondant. I have taught many of these 2 day classes and readily agree with the fact that the students do not learn what they need to. There is a fine art to being a "good" phlebotomist, and there is also a big difference in sticking dummie arms and healthy students and instructors in class and being able to consistently draw injured or ill patients. These students do not learn about the many variables that can and do affect blood analysis. Many times a phlebotomist must step beyond the "average" procedure and call upon professional knowledge and skill. I agree with the Professional Center for Phlebotomy Education, all on the job training should cease. This is part of the reason our profession is the only invasive procedure on the books, that does not require a license. I'm sure if you took a poll from the patient's perspective, you would find the extreme need for professionally trained personnell. |
|
Shelby in Georgetown, Texas 10 months ago |
Then apparently you shorted your students. I have drawn kiddos to rest homes and healthy to on their death bed. I think you are both wrong. And on top of all that a book can only teach so much and a clinical is all as good as what you get to stab. I have rode the horse and then some. I am not just a phlebotomist, an EMT-I and in nursing school. Phlebotomy is not the high tech oh so special art form that you are making it out to be. You either get it or you don't. There is no big cover up or immpossible gimme that is taught. 1. Find vein by touch 2. Test vein how does it feel, is it strong or weak?? 3. Hold position, anchor if you will 4. Fast but gentle poke. Do I really need to continue?!?!? This is by far the easiest medical procedure. CPR is failed more!! |
|
Vicci in Johnson City, Tennessee 10 months ago |
You can obviously quote a text book, almost. Yet I would like to see your skill level. If you honestly think that this is all there is to Phlebotomy, it is a good thing that you are in nursing school. The Lab is definitely not your home. Of course, I will concede to you that my personal opinion is that those people who use the stepping stones from the Lab to nursing are the ones who couldn't cut it in the Lab. I most certainly wish you all the best of luck in your nursing career, I'm sure it is for the best of patients and staff. |

I truly support your comments about phlebotomy training and experience. Prior to attending the school, I witnessed a nurse who attempted 6 times to draw blood from my mother. If I knew back then what she was doing wrong, I could have stopped her and let another nurse or a phlebotomist did the job. Bottom line two unsuccessful attempts should have been turned over to the next expert. Not to insult nursing professions, she should have known this protocol just as a phlebotomist. |

Hi I went to school from Jan- May, and then only had one month of clincal training. And doing live pokes on elderly people and people in ICU is totally different than doing practice pokes on the dummy that we had in class. I am still sending out resumes and I still haven't got a fulltiume job as of yet. When I was working at the hospital the phleb there were telling me that prior to them getting the job at the hospital they volunteered , unpaid for doctors here in the Dallas area. I need a fulltime job so that I can start paying off my school loan. Good luck!b |

I went to school for phlebotomy, my class was 5 and a half months long, 4 hrs a night 2 days a week. There is alot to learn about the correct "areas to stick and areas to avoid because of nerve placement, formation of hematomas and injury and lawsuits from those injuries." I agree that Phlebotomy isn't the most invasive procedure performed in the hospital but it is a very important part. I have seen nurses attempt to draw blood and say they were leaving it to the "experts" in the lab. I have many patients who ask for me by name or say "Oh I am so glad it's you, the nurses tried but couldn't get me or say that they wouldn't let the nurses draw them, that they had told the nurses to call the lab". If you are in the hospital alot or for long periods of time the patients know who they want to draw their blood and most of the time is the phlebs. I am not saying Phlebotomy is rocket science but a good phleb is worth their weight in gold to the person being poked. I have drawn on newborn babies to the elderly, to the cancer patient, ICU and PICU. I have leared many tricks of the trade from senior phlebotomist, I don't think a weekend class covers all their is to know. |

I know that both are hiring. Along with that if you have no actual experience employers are less likely to hire you. I wouls suggest that you contact hospitals directly even in person would be better. Talk to the hiring managers and bring a copy of your resume. Let them know you and not a piece of paper. It would appear as if I hit a nerve. Please don't be so upset. I am extremely glad that you are striving for your nursing degree. What I don't condone is your reference that anyone with 48 hours of free time can achieve the same professional knowledge and skill as those who seek the educational betterment of the profession. Must your guidance be so negative? I would truly expect you to have pride in what you do, just as I have pride in 12 years of Professional Laboratory experience and value every member of our staff in bringing their expertise of quality care to the table. It is bad enough that you can't see the error of your ways in trying to give ill advise to those seeking knowledge, but to stoop to belittling the achievements of other staff members and name calling is reprehensible. It is every healthcare provider's responsibility to continuously push for quality care provided by a knowledgeable and professional staff. As much as I would love to continue a daily debate with you, I realize the waste of my time. There are some people you can not educate no matter how much evidence based research you try to guide them to. I would beseech you to open your mind and let not ignorance guide you. Encourage those seeking knowledge to strive for the best sources available to them. Help build them up, give them confidence and a path to a better future. Don't stand idly by and watch someone limit themselves. To use your own reference, "get back on the horse baby girl" you are not there yet. |

I would like to add my comments on the people looking for phlebotomy training. I know things have changed drastically in the past few years, many states don't require certification but to get hired some facilities require it. I was a medic in the Army and performed venipuncture every day but could not find a job without attending school and becoming certified. I would check to see what qualifications your state's or local facilities prefer. I attended a program that was at the local vocational school because I didn't have alot of money to spend, and they let us all make payments, I think it was around 1300.00. It still wasn't easy to find that first job but I think it sure did help. Just my opinion and something to think about. You may also run into some very negative people in the lab, best advise stay far away from those that verbally attack or belittle other employees. That's not the way you want to spend your days and it happens more than you would think. |

Hi Shannon I would see if there are any teaching hospitals in your area. Inpatient phlebs have a high turnover, most hospitals do not run ads but have them on their website. Make a list of local hospitals you are willing to travel to and keep applying to them. Do you know anyone who works in a hospital? That is sometimes the key but not always. Good Luck! |
|
Sassygirl in Jeromesville, Ohio 10 months ago |
Also what state do you live in Shannon? You can try Quest Diagnostics, LabCorp, Plasma Donation Centers. Just keep throwing those resumes out and call them once a week to find out if the postion has been filled. Let them know you are serious. |

I took a basic class, then took and advanced phebotomy externship at a hospital which required 125 hrs, 125 successful veni puntures, 25 dermal puncture and class work. It was intensive. I'm going to take my national test now which I was told is about $100. I'm looking to transfer to pheonix, or Sandiego area, but was wondering how the pay was out there and the job availability. I'm trained as a NA, emergency med tech, med terminology and now phlebotomy and going into the nursing program. thanx in advance for your reply |

Hello,
Salaries vary depending on the cost of living in whatever area you reside in. In the Washington DC and Maryland areas you can usually make anywhere from 11.00 to 21.00 an hour. Some of my experienced friends make 20.00 and more an hour because they are well seasoned in the field. |

If yes where could i get it?? Yes, you have to be certified in CA to work as a phlebotomist. Contact the state and you can get the information on line, you also have to take a national test...(CA doesn't test they just license) NCCT is a good testing school. Be prepared to wait anywhere from 6 months - 2 years to get your certification after you apply (the department that handles the applications is very understaffed and slow. Unfortunately you can not work as a phleb in CA without the license.

In case is too expensive for you try to call NCCT, www.ncctinc.com/, and find out what papers do you need to apply for you licence or call DHS www.dhs.ca.gov/ to find out what do you need to apply for certificate.
