I just took my exam last week through school at RVCC here in New Jersey. According to our textbook, The Art And Science of Phlebotomy, the correct order of draw was as follows:

Yellow, Blood Cultures, 8-10x inversion Microbiology
Light Blue, Sodium Citrate, 3-4x inv., Coagulation

SST(tiger top)gel, or Gold 5x inv.
Plain red(serum) plastic-5x inv. glass 0x inv

Green, Heparin 8-10x inv. Chemistry
Lavendar, Pink, EDTA, 8-10x inv.
Grey, Sodium Flouride/Potassium Oxalate 8-10x inversion

I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A YELLOW TUBE AS THE LAST TUBE

And don't forget to invert tubes during practical. They WILL deduct points if you forget.

They will also ask inversion questions on exam. They will also ask which systems are affected by certain tests. Diagram of the heart and diagram of vein and you have to identify. Just know the text and you'll be fine. I was more worried about the Practical than Written and I aced the Practical.

Since you need an 80 to pass, try and think of it as you only need 30% of the wriiten part right. Not that you want to do lousy, but you HAVE to ace Practical since it counts as 50% of exam. So figure out of 220 questions, you MUST get at least 170 right to pass written.

Also you need to remember EXACTLY the test, tube, order of draw and which department. I figured that, for instance, most tests for Chemicals, such as Creatine, Calcium, Bilirubin go to Chemistry Dept. But they wil try and throw you off by adding something like a GTT which is a grey top tube that goes to Chemistry. Anything having to do with Blood Sugar is a Grey top tube. Hgb A1C. Hemoglobin Electrophoresis are LAVENDAR top which go to Chemistry. LACTIC ACID-GREY TOP CHEMISTRY. They might throw in BNP lavendar top chemistry. Just stay on your toes as far as Chemistry department tests. Everything else should be easy.

Hi Mike:

I recently moved to Fremont, CA in August 2010. I took a PBT course in 2008 (Loved it)along with my clinicals in a hospital update, NY. I tried to get a job as a PBT, but could not obtain one as the recession was in progress. Being out of a job for a while, I took the 1st job that came my way which was a receptionist/office manager for a Behavioral Health Center which I also enjoyed. I am presently job hunting - anything at this point (& its really bad) & would eventually would like to get back in the business especially since I am paying back a student loan & I have kept all my text books. Do you know of a very cheap OR FREE place where I can attend a brush up course. You can also e-mail me at ccollins42@ymail.com. Am still learning my way around the area.

The last yellow tube (the ACD) you're referring to is for HLA typing. It will say ACD on the tube instead of SPS (blood cultures).

If I'm understanding your question correctly, the X means "times". Example: 8-10 TIMES inversions of the tube.

American University of Medical Technology...Are you going just to become a Phlebotomist or is it to add to your medical career? I took the class and got my license a year ago and still can not find a job. Not many if any in my class ever found jobs, so Id really think about it unless you already have a medical background..

Hi Everyone!

I am confused regarding LFS and NCCT.

I just took the test for Phlebotomy Technician Test at NCCT today and I passed. They have all my documents already so I just need to wait the certification in the mail.

Once I received the certification from NCCT. WHAT I need to do next? Do I need to apply for LFS too? I am sorry, I am not from California really and I just took my course in a hospital so there is no really guidance form my instructor unlike if you attend a short program.

Please help
