My son finished his certification in phlebotomy and can't find a job due to 'lack of experience'. How can he get the experience if no one will hire him unless he is experienced. |

First of all he needs to start off in the hospital or red cross! Hope this helps |

LuAnn Padilla 53 months ago |
Thank you for your comments. I will definately pass on the Red Cross idea. He has been applying at hospitals but they don't need him. He is trying for the Sacramento, California area like, Roseville, Placerville, Auburn, Folsom, Sacramento, etc. Thank you for your ideas and Colorado placement. I will also tell him of Karen Kennedy. Thank you again for your immediate answers. LuAnn |

have him start off in a temperary staffing service! i'm sorry but even though he has his cert, california is one of the hardest places to find jobs without exp. off the bat. but by going thru the medical staffing services major hospitals and business hire people from there because it saves them training money and insureance if the person cant do the job. and by going thru a temp employers will give you the chance to get better because you are still under the temp for three months and that gives the employer time to see if you are worth bringing on full time, and if so then you will just be hired on full time and ended the temps contract.....i hope this helps out. my cousin was a medic in the military and went that route so.... |

Same is happening to me, I finish the course three month ago, and I've applied like at 30 diferente places already, but nobody has call me, I have applied for reposted position like 10 times already. It's frustating that you paid all that money for a course where you can't find a job without the experiencia. If no one give you the chance to start, how can you get any expirience. I hope the companies, hospitals, etc. were more flexible and more willing to give new commers an opportunity. |

Does your school have a career coordinator that you can contact and ask for help? Sometime when THEY call a site you have applied at,you get more attention that way. Have you talked with your teacher or the program director,to see what they have to suggest? If all they can do is shrug their shoulders then it was a worthless program. These kinds of letters should be a warning to all who want to enter a phlebotomy program. First find out if there IS a career person at the school and if they ever do any job placements. If they say no to the latter, then ask WHY NOT,since it isn't going to kill them to attempt doing that. Some of these coordinators have a LOT of connections. It may make you feel like a little kid, that you have to have someone help you to get a job,but that is what they are getting paid to do,and they should be doing more than just posting jobs and sending out resumes for you. |

Do you know by any chance where can I go work as a phlebotomy or where can I go volunteer I really need to work I been waisting my time. I don't know whay in California it's hard to find a job. Thank You |
|
LC in Cleveland, Ohio 51 months ago Guide |
Well Brenda,do you have the required training and certification in your state? Because if you don't then that is why you can't find anything, even as a volunteer. Unless you mean ANY job in California. But I have asked over and over and have never received an answer as to whether it is easier or more difficult to find a phlebotomy job in a state that mandates being certified. I have been thinking easier since places will not be hiring anyone off the street anymore like they do in most of the other states. As long as they keep doing that, then too many actual phlebotomists will remain jobless. |

I finished my Phlebotmy training in October of 2007. And it seemed like I applied everywhere in Las Vegas, but no one would hire me without at least 6 months experience, even the hospitals here. And some of the staffing places too wanted at least 6 months experience. All I have is a national certifaction that my Phlebotomy instrustor told everyone to get, well none of the employers that I applied, have never hard of the American Soceity for Clinical Pathology (which is who I'm certified through), and would not take that. So now finally after about 6 months of looking, I finally got a job in a lab at a plasma donor center. It took a long time for me to find something. My suggestion is apply for any Phlebotmy/lab assistant position that you see, even if they say needs experience, because who knows you may be the only one that puts in an appilcation for that position. |

LC in Cleveland, Ohio 50 months ago Guide |
I hate to admit this but I had never heard of plasma centers until last summer, and I was certified 4 years ago. Not once did I hear about them in school. They are not advertised or pushed enough. There are usually one or even two banks within an hours distance of everyone. New grads should be prepared to have to drive a long way to get your first job. Apply to all places in your surrounding counties. Many labs are ASCP labs so that part doesn't make any sense, unless it was the HR staff saying they never heard of them. |

What I suggest, is that he gets more sticking in. He has to at least make a goal of 100 sticks!! The more practice the better.. Have him keep stickin, try going to churches and put up signs for helping out.. And have a sign in log... It worked for me very well!!! |

Im an employee for ZLB plasma services. Our program has on the job paid training but he would have to apply online and then just keep checking in to see the status of his application. Alot of people dont realize if you call everyday and bug them about your application, you will definitely stick out in there hiring minds and shows you really want the job. we are located on 162 and glisan in gresham. there is also biomat on 82 and holgate. Wish your son the best of luck and Im sure he will do well |

Try an VA clinics or military bases. I'm a credentialing clerk for a government contractor, not sure if we have any openings in MA, but he can go on our websites and send in his resume. We will hire them if they're just out of school.

I am going through the same thing as well...however i am finding more job openings within the hospital that pay equal or even more than phlebotomy... the best thing to do is volunteer around once or twice a week, and it will give him the exposure and employers will start to notice him. |

i too am having a hard time finding a job in phlebotomy. when i started school, i was soooo excited to get out into the work field. but they all want at least 6 months experience. I learned that you can use your externship or internship as experience on your resume. also, places such as the health department are always looking for phlebotomy volunteers. So, just volunteer for a few months and get a crappy job to keep yourself afloat. and there ya go, your volunteering IS experience. |

Thank You Okay maybe you need to take your medication now. This post wasn't in response to you but since you ask, yes I have a job in health care. I'm a PCA on a Critical Care Unit. I see nothing wrong with what I wrote since strong communication skills are extremely important in health care. If you can read I also wrote " Please don't take offense" Wow how rude of me!! If you get that worked up over constructive critisism then working in health care is not for you! When doctors or nurses tell me there is an easier way to accomplish something I don't jump down their throat for suggesting I'm doing something the wrong way. I listen and learn because their way might be better then mine. The only rude person was the one that responded to my post! |

Amy, If communication skills were an obstacle to finding a desired position, then yes, I would run out and take a class. I'm taking a Spanish class because it would benefit me in my current position. I wasn't told to take Spanish. I wanted to be able to communicate with the patients that can't speak English. You have completely misunderstood my initial post. I've had patients ask me what their doctor said to them after the doctor walked out of their room. That's not good in my opinion. Although a doctor won't have poor communication skills held against him. If you want to think I'm so rude, whatever, it wasn't meant that way! Oh and yes I'm a PCA and certified through the NPA in phlebotomy. I have over 20 years experience in health care and have never been called rude by anyone! |
