I am new to Salem Oregon and need a phlebotomy job. I am nationally certified (PBT) and it's current. I have over a year of experience and can't find a job! I had a great job but had to quit because we moved from Eugene to Salem which is 70 miles away. I love doing Phlebotomy and I am eager to get back to work. If anyone can help, let me know! |

contact Superior Mobile Medics in San Diego California. www.superiormobilemedics.com Can you do EKGs? This company does in home or in office mobile exams on life insurance applicants, and you take blood, collect urine, take the medical history, and do the EKG.

Marlene in Weirton, West Virginia said: A CNA course will not teach you how to do DNA testing. A CNA course is a waste of money to someone who is already a Phlebotomist. That is incorrect, I've been a CNA since the early 80's. I went back to school for PCT (Patient Care Technician) which is basically an advanced skill CNA. I also just finished my phlebotomy certification through the NPA. The more skills you have the better off you are. I now have a job in the CCU drawing blood, doing EKG's with minimal patient care, earning far more then a entry level phlebotomist. |

Lea08 in Wisconsin said: I just finished going to school for this at a tech school. It was a 3 month program, 6 weeks intro to phleb, 3 weeks phleb techniques, followed by 3 weeks to do a 45 hour clinical rotation. I think that this should be the mandatory schooling for this, people trust in you to know what you are doing in a profession such as this. Plus alot of the jobs you are titled as a lab assistant, and you need to be able to process the samples and perform waived testing. At least around here you do. There are quite a lot of open positions for phlebs in my area. Where are the jobs listed? What city? |

ALot of them aren't listed on job sites, make a list of all hospitals/clinics that might do draws and then find each of there websites. They will have job listings, usually under the about us tab, then careers. |

For a first phleb job, the Red Cross isn't so bad, and you learn a lot. They are unionized and so their pay and bennies are better than area labs and hospitals. They will work the butts off newbies and give you the worst hours to start with, but with Red Cross training and experience under your belt, you can work just about anywhere when (if) you leave there. Hi, Ricci! |

Where can I go find work as a phlebotomist in southern California. Any info would help greatly Ive been doing phlebotomy for some time and my father is a cop- when i first got out of school i worried about the different consent issues, doc holiday is exaggerating. If the patient refuses the police are not going to push it because the patients refusal is as good as a positive test. Go for it- its a fun great job. Yes there are a lot of crazy people and occasionally they get violent but whats the fun in life if its same old same old all day everyday? I like a little action but maybe thats just me |

I am in California, and the DMV here makes you sign a consent when you get your drivers license, that you agree to alcohol or drug testing if requested
You cannot drive with out consenting to that. So,, They have the legal consent on file at the DMV,,
Now if they were driving without a license,,, I dont know. But you get hazard pay. I have a friend that does this work in a jail, she is a R.N. though. |

Well, I didn't hear back. When that happens, I just write the person/company off, because my time and talents are too valuable to waste on anyone who won't or cannot communicate. One should be able to see by now, that we're a hard-working bunch of phlebotomists here, and we also want to work. |

Okay, Carmen, here's what you do: Put a nice, neat resume together with all pertinent experience, training, and certification(s). Make copies. Call ALL the labs and hospitals in the area you are interested in and ask for the name of the lab supervisor. Send a resume with a cover letter to the laboratory supervisor of ALL hospitals and All labs in the area you want to cover. Your cover letter can be a form one, but be sure to personalize it with the name of the supervisor and the facility and write a little bit about why you want to work for them and what you feel you can do for them. Make a list, for your own use, of when, where, and to whom, you have sent these letters. After 7 days, call the person you sent the resume to, ask if they have received it and ask for an interview, ("when would be a good time for me to stop by to meet with you and see your facility?")even if they are not hiring right now. Offer to work per diem, if necessary. |

Susan in Elk Grove, California said: Hi everyone ! I finally found a lab to at least volunteer at to keep up my skills and it will turn into a job as well in a few months, Ya ! The women I spoke with had told me, that finding a JOB in the health care is going to be hard right now, BECAUSE their on a HIRING FREEZE because of the California budget. So now I know why I haven't found a job in the last few months and its been real depressing. So if everyone has been feeling a little discouraged like I have, its not us its because of that budget ! So ask places to see if you could volunteer some were and once the sign that budget, you'll be first in line to get that job. Oh and when you volunteer they let you make up your own hours, so you don't have to quit your day job. I'm volunteering 2 days a week for 2.5 hour so I can still get my son from kindergarten. I hope my information helps ! I applied with a agency to find me a job and with in two weeks I started working at a hospital, after my contract was over, the hospital hired me first per diem then full time. don't give up, go to an agency and start there. They start at 15.00 an hour but its better then nothing |

It's so sad that you go to school, work hard to finish the program only to lose your mind trying to find a job! I'm also disappointed over the pay. I was already a PCT when I started the phlebotomy program and worked at a hospital. I spent the entire summer in phlebotomy and took my NPA exam in September. I transferred from the medical floor to critical care, this gave me the chance to gain phlebotomy experience, we didn't draw blood on the medical floor. I was disappointed to find out that the pay didn't change. I earn $15.00 an hour plus $2.00 more on the weekends. I read so many posts of people unable to find jobs. The hospitals are a good place to start for new grads. I'm happy to at least be in a place where I can keep my certification plus gain the experience required by most labs. |

Try the local Red Cross. They are unionized. As a newbie, your hours will be terrible (nights, weekends, on call) for the first year, but the pay is very good and so are the benefits. Hint: they don't want to know that your car needs repairs or that your "kids come first". You must be reliable and able to handle any personal problems without calling in (although you can, in some cases, trade off shifts with another worker.) Once you get trained by them and work for them fora year, you'll probably want to stay, but if not you'll be in demand anywhere! |

Also, all you guys and gals out there, beware of the outrageously high priced phlebotomy courses that are popping up on every street corner. As far as lab workers go, phlebs are on the bottom rung of the ladder, the lowest paid and the first to be let go in most facilities. Instead of taking a 3, 6, or 9 month course in phlebotomy, take a community college course in medical assisting, lab technology, lab assisting. It will cost about the same, take much longer, but you'll learn phlebotomy, get a 2-year college deree out of it, and have a lot more job opportunities. I'm in my sixties, and semi retired after working in medical practices, emergency care centers, and corporate medical departments, all with just a 2 year degree in science and medical assisting. Phlebotomy was only a part of my training. I would have been a nurse, but I wasn't that interested in medicine until I was 50. Those of you who are younger (under 45) think seriously about nursing. You'll always have a job and the variety of jobs is endless! Although phlebotomy is an art, and top notch phlebs are few and far between, if phlebotomy is your only skill you will never make a decent wage, you will always be underappreciated, and will always be anxious about your job security. CROSS TRAIN NOW! |

Oh my i could write a book here :) Ive been a Phleb for the better part of 16yrs, 12 of them just doing phlebotomy in a hospital, 4 yrs in dr's office, 10 of those yrs ive also done DUI checkpoints which there is alot of discussion here, wish this was a chatroom...I love it, i consider myself excellant at doing my job, you are right its a skill, you either got it or you dont, i can draw hours old babies to old ppl near death, but not dead, they are a bit hard :) unless you catch them as soon as they expire, i watched a Dr stick a patient in the heart one time, was abit creepy...and i agree dont expect a big salary $12-15 tops...phlebotomy schools are a waste of money, spend a few extra months and either do LPN or medical assistant, which is what i am...9month course in PA...people do not want to hire phlebs just learning, i run a small dr's office and we take externs from medical assistant school and they ALL want to draw blood and think they are good...well let me tell ya what, they know nothing, plus they are 22 yrs old and have NO work ethic, but in time im sure they will grow, if you have patients with them, but seriously, ppl want experienced phlebs, who wants someone ungracefully digging around in there arm?? :) as for questions in interview...know what tubes drawn in what order, how to clean the site, at what angle to hold the needle, how to deal with the public in any and all situations...maybe step by step what to do, im sure some safety questions...oh and for the questions froma few months ago about how to go about getting on with the dui task force, they came to our hospital lab and ask us to help, it was just the local police, then recently the state police contacted me and ask if i wanted to do it with them...but thats about it...id love to know how many sticks i have...id lend you all out some..lol...i bet between 6-8 thousand, i would do health screens with 300 ppl just sticking 1 after another...great way to get slick at it..ok ill shut up now :) |
