Think thats tough, I have over 20 years phlebotomy exp and no one wants to hire. I do not like to brag but I am one of the best, no matter which hospital that I have worked at, I always went above and beyond, unfortunately the last hospital didn't see it that way and after 4 years let me go. I am one of the best neo-natal, pediatric Phlebotomist, and when ever there was a difficult draw I was the go to person. Now, because of the exp no one wants to hire.

I know your pain! I had to jump from here to there to get enough patients in to be accepted anywhere. But it seemed like once I had over 400 sticks, it seemed like I was finding more and more jobs. There are a few staffing companies that pay pretty decent if you have LOTS of experience. Try either Maxim or Phlebotek Staffing..maxim does all types of staffing, becuase I;m also a RN. Both are nation wide. www.phlebotek.com pays better, but only takes you if you have a LOT of experience. |

I graduated last year from a phlebotomy program that i later realized was not CAAHEP accredited so it is harder to find out how to get certified. there was no clinical portion so all I have to show are the 100 sticks we performed in class. The school that I went to no longer offers their phlebotomy program so it seems that I have no one to talk to about my issues. I have not been able to find a job or even get noticed. I have applied to every job I can find (every shift, reg, temp, on call only) I have had 2 call backs and I was told that I needed experience. I'm quite frustrated at this point because it seems that it was a complete waste of my time and money. Can someone offer me any kind of advice or suggestions on what I can do? |

What are good websites to learn about phlebotomy certification? |

I would get a certification from either a community college or an actual hospital that offers phlebotomy courses. Honestly, it is so hard to become an actual working phlebotomist, I would only consider a certification from a community college that also offers scheduled clinicals. Once you are certified you will need to apply for every phlebotomy. Take whatever job you are offered to get experience., much Not to be a Debbie downer but the pay isn't great, much less than what the schools all tell you to expect, especially for the risks we take on a regular basis (I work in a hospital), and it is extremely hard to get a first time job. Remember schools need to fill their programs so they spoon feed you information about the career that isn't exactly spot on.

Apply, apply, apply for any and all shifts, particularly in a hospital. Keep applying...it may take months and then only an overnight opportunity...this is the only way you will get a job or get your foot in the door......it would not be unusual to put in

Were Experienced when we leave the school. otherwise you wouldnt be graduated from the class to start with. . Im also certified. I have been looking for a year now. No job because I have no other experience , then class. its never going to change in the job world. Those people forgot that they once were beginners in their job's as well. As far as an insurance liability. they all carry malpractice insurance on you when you start. |

Sorry your wrong. Certificate in hand -you are not experienced when you leave school. Working phlebotomy experience and school clinicals are not the same thing. Yes, clinicals gives you 100-200 or so sticks, and yes, it was on people....Honestly what you did in those few months doesn't even compare to real world working phlebotomy. And yes, while the facility may have malpractice coverage for people working in their facility, it is only if you are following exact hospital/facility guidelines and protocol during your draws. Many people do not. They have the attitude of get the blood however they must and who will know.....Bad! In addition, you have no idea what the patient or their family may or may not say about you and your actions during or after a draw, especially if they have been injured. And if by happenstance you should do anything outside of the guidelines even non intentionally, you are definitely liable and can be held liable-with no protection from your facility. There are active lawsuits against phlebotomists that are very serious. I recently went to a seminar where a University Phlebotomy Instructor actually reviews lawsuits against phleobomists in the U.S. The simplest mistakes can become the biggest ordeal. This is an invasive job we do. Phlebotomy is serious business. That is why there is private liability insurance available to Phlebs. and all medical professionals. It is unfortunate that it is so hard to break in to the field, but, once you finally do, know it is very serious business. |

Tell me about it, I have completed my Phlebotomy class for the second time (I was certified back in 98) and have been unsuccessful as well. There should be a website or something for newly licensed phlebotomist. We pay all that money to, one complete the course at an accredited school and then, two pay the money to the state of California to obtain a license. Humm, but then there is nobody to help or give us a chance to prove that we can do the job just as good and a seasoned phlebotomist. I tend to think that a person just out of school is a likely candidate because they just took the test and have to necessary knowledge and perhaps necessary skills. If we didn’t, then how did we pass the class and national test? If anyone knows how or where we can look, please help. |

Try applying for positions doing Insurance exams, Quest, or Lab Corp. Usually they aren't looking for much experience and at the same time you can gain more experience to apply for other jobs later on. I hope that helps and happy hunting! |

I agree it is not easy getting a job with no experience, but to get experience can be done. I used to be a work in this field. The best way I suggest is to enroll in a program that has an internship so the company will be able to see your work habits. It is a win, win situation. You get valuable experience and they get a free employee for some months. I worked for a company and they hired me as soon as my intern was over. My intern ended at 12:00 noon and I took lunch and I went on their clock at 1:00 pm. Good Luck. |

If you really want to work in the medical field, I would speak to the lab manager and try to arrange a free internship with them so they can see your work habits. You have a better chance of getting a job with them if you show initiate for the job. If they do not hire you, you will have experience to show another company. Good Luck |
