Lab Corp and Quest are very difficult to get into,at least in this state it is. |

sassygirl in Jeromesville, Ohio said: Hello everyone I have thought of a few other options to try also. There seem to be alot of "Plasma Services Companies" out there, like ZBL is a local one for ohio. The hours are sometimes long but it may be another way in after you get experience you can move on to something more to your liking. One of the girls I work with started out at a Plasma collection site and she hated it but she ended up getting a job at the hospital because she could say she had experience. I have read some of the other forums and I hope no one thinks I am being smart, I just want to help. Take Care All and Good Luck!!!! I started training at Plasma Care not far from ZLB. It was the sadest experience I ever had. I will keep looking before I go to another plasma place. These places are not what healthcare represents. They are in business for money. |

I can be reached at victoriaholden19@yahoo.com. Thanks. I think she was referring to "Summit Health". They are one of many health screening companies. The jobs are now and then, here and there, but they pay well. Try doing an online search of these companies. "Health Fitness" has a lot of screenings in the Columbus area. If you want more info, write me (e-mail address is in my profile). I know what you are going through, believe me. And I bet you had class members who were poor students and had a lousy technique yet were able to find a job. |

To answer that question- YES. They recently interviewed someone who was okay, but certainly not at the top. His test scores weren't the best either. If I'm correct he got the job I was applying for. I'm not jealous, all I'm looking for is an equal opportunity. |

The only problem with Lab Corp is that they usually want 2-5 years experience. It will be my third time trying to apply at the hospital which two of the phlebotomy classmates that I was in the same class are now working at. All I want is a fair chance to interview and then whatever happens, happens.... |

I went as far as`having a professional resume made-up. Also, what I don't have in phlebotomy experience I have in people skills. I have dealt with the ederly on a personal level and am also a P.O.A. for my parent. I have raised children for over 30+ years ans am an excellent student. My appearance is alway's to notch and I keep up with the latest hairstyles and fashions. I'm well educated and have a business degree, but I must tell you that all of this seems to mean very little to some HR's. I get along with all types of people from all walks of life because I was in sales for many years. All I want is the opportunity to get an interview and hopefully thry will see that there is more to me than just a phlebotomist with an NHA Certification. I beleive that my age is a factor when they look at my resume, but how can I surpass the dates that I graduated without lying? I'm in a no win situaton....I am located approximately 25 minutes from Columbus, Ohio. |

Can anyone give me any information on any of these titles:
Our Phlebotomy Teacher never discussed any of these other specialty fields with our class. So, if anyone has any information on any of these titles, I really would appreciate the information or how to begin finding schools that offer the extra education. Thanks to anyone that can offer any ideas or leads. |

I graduated at the end of 2007, and certified at the beginning of 2008. I am not working yet and am very discouraged to say the least. I have applied twice at our local hospital and didn't even get the opportunity to have an interview. I also had a professional resume made so that I would'nt look so new.

they are tough to get into any where yet they promote such a great advertising technique. They must of hired a great ad campagin company to do nothing but lie to every one. that must be where all their money is going, on the lies that they will hire new students. |

What is a Phlebotomist Processor and what exactly do they do? A Phlebotomy Processor is someone who registeres the patients requisitions into the computer and enteres the tests. Just basic computer knowledge is needed (how to use a key board). Laboratory Assistant Phlebotomist? Basically the same thing. Medical Technician Phlebotomist? 4 years of schooling as a generalist with the knowledge of a phlebotomist because you will have to draw blood as well. |

I really don't think that this is just in the field of Phlebotomists, because I have been on several forum sites and find the same complaint over and over sadly enough. Some have undergone extensive schooling in some of these different fields. Their problem is getting a job for the first time because everyone wants experience.

LC in Dayton, Ohio said: A lot of highly trained, certified people are applying and applying and getting nowhere while others can waltz right into a position, sometimes with very little or poor training. Until that is changed, until everyone who DRAWS BLOOD has to prove that they have a lengthy amount of phlebotomy and clinical lab science education and are registered, then this will continue. I was told that lot of hospitals have to advertise that a position is available and you will see that ad for weeks or months. What they are doing is gathering up a lot of applications so they can pick and choose, but then they end up hiring in a recent student that did their clinicals there. A teacher of mine admitted that hospitals LIKE to hire those type in because they are familiar with them and the former student already knows what to expect, and doesn't need to be shown much more. But these same ex-students have the EXACT amount of experience as you,if you did a clinical. How these HR people can excuse that is beyond me,and it should be brought to their attention. Unless these places NEVER hire in a recent ex- student that did their externship there, then they do not have the right to be telling anyone else who ALSO did several weeks of in and out patient clinicals- "You don't have enough experience". |

Im right there with you honey tell me what to do and I will do it, I went to medical assisting school and now my loans are in collection. when I went to school they told me I would get jobs left and right and come to find out that they want bilingual people. I am not bilingual, so I am not working but they also want one years "paid" experience. How do I get the experience if no will hire me? The same as the Phlebotomist, no experience no job. If we all went in together then fine we can do it or if we wrote to the Health Career Agency for the US then that would be great also, just I dont know where to start. If you have any ideas call me 951-735-5056 my name is Denine but I go by Dee. |

I feel where you all are coming from, because most jobs want you to have at least 3mos. to 1 year experience. I did get a job offer from a plasma center before I finished school, but they wanted me to go out of town and train at one of their sites for 10-12 weeks, but I have kids in school and was not able to do it. They didn't care if I were certified or not or had experience, because they trained you like they want and certify you. If it wasn't for my kids I would have taken it. That's the price you pay when you have kids, but you can also call around to blood banks like red cross to see if they take volunteers which is what I did, but I only give them 5 hours a month since I don't get paid. I have to work to pay my bills and take care of my kids, so that is all I could spare just to get the experience. When I move to Atlanta next year I should not have any problems. There are also other websites you can go on to view Phlebotomy jobs. Websites:
These are some great websites so please check them out. I hope that this has been helpful. |

My fiance is about to do his clinicals for phlebotomy school. I really hope that he gets hired where he does his externship. I think he will because he has great people skills plus he is really smart, and he said his teacher is always tellin him that he is the best in his class so who knows. but he really needs a job he has had no income since january b/c he can't find a job that he can do he is somewhat disabled after being ran over by a bobcat on a job site while doing landscaping work. well then the only experience he had was in manual labor but he can't do it anymore b/c of his injuries. he can't do cashier or anything like that b/c he can't stand up all day. so that is why he picked phlebotomy so that he can get a job that he is physically able to do.

That is really sad and I feel your pain. Check out this website for disabled people to work from home. It is a legit company. Keep your head up. Things will get better and fall into place when you least expect it. Hope this is helpful. Website:

I recently was hired at our local hospital after several months of applying for every position and any position that came up. I was called in for an interview and was offered a position just recently. My suggestion is to not give up and keep applying for all phlebotomy positions, especially if they are always hiring at your local hospital. They like that someone has gumption and continues trying eventhough they are turned down more than once. Good luck and don't give up! |

Well they help you. For the most part, they show you how they want it done. They give you a cheat sheet as they call it. It has all the tests that are performed by the Lab. They will also have you shadow someone as well while you are training. |

Just keep an eye out on the hospital site that you are interested in applying for. They change all the time as you will probably find out when you check on a regular basis. Just apply for any of their positions that you might qualify for. The reason I say this, is that when you are an employee, it is easier when positions become available in your particular field of expertise. Most of the time they will hire from within before they hire non-employees, which in a sense is really pretty nice. You can as an example we'll say, become a full time rather than stay as a part time, see what I'm saying. So if you can, apply and don't get discouraged. Go in to HR and drop off a resume, this will help them to remember your name when they see your resume if you apply online. Call every so often and ask if they have any positions available in your field. Say your name and keep it fresh in their minds, so when they interview they will remember you. Good luck and thank you for your comment. |

The one thing that I would tell anyone wanting a job in Phlebotomy as soon as they get out of school is: Know your tubes and the different types of tests that can be requested by a physician or specialist. There are tests that even the most knowledgeable phlebs that have been doing this for years have never heard of, but the problem is that when you work with other phlebs that have the experience and years on, they are not always happy when you have to ask what tube do I use or how many will I need. This is just good sound advice of what I ran into when I first started in an off-site lab. If you know this ahead, it will save you being frustrated on the job. |
