I am thinking of hiring a phlebotomist for my practice, as i usually send all of my patients to outside places for routine draws. Does anyone know if I need special medical insurance to hire phlebotomists? what happens if they get stuck or something.

I would ask your insurance company that question. They would know the right answer to your question.

Hire a Independant Contracted Phlebotomist and you would not have to worry about their liability issues. They will take care of their own insurance being contractors. They can come into your office when blood work needs to be collected whichever way you and the contractor agree.

A lot of physicians hire a phlebotomist for thier practices for many reasons, the nurse or ma may be busy or need to be free to get the next patient set up. As far as insurance if your nurse or ma has been doing this till now they should cover a certified person working in your office. I myself have been certified for the past 5 years and have worked in clinical and hospital settings. I also have certifications in ekg, cna, medical coding, and phlebotomy. If you are near Huntington WV. I would be interested in working for you. e-mail me at www.diana.3310@hotmail.com

I've been in this field for 19 years a few as a office manager of a doctors office, as well as an Consultant for new doctors as your self organizing and staffing their practice.
The best and most cost effective way will be for you to have which ever lab is in your area to provide you with a Phlebotomist. I had Labcorp as my primary refernce lab so they provided my office with some one to draw blood and handle it. Quest Diagnostic labs also offer this.
Just call your account rep if you have one that provide you with your lab supplies and they will walk you through it. This will cut down on a lot of over head because you will elimnate the cost of most of your lab supplies, payroll and benefits for another staff member. Your Medical assistant will be another option for blood draw. Hiring an experience CMA will give you low overhead because they are trained in all duties to run a doctors office. Front desk , Lab, EKG's, medical billing and coding , as well as other clinical duties.
Good luck and I hope this information was some help.
