Hi, I am looking to go back to school for the PTA program and I have read overviews about the general job duties/environments but honestly I am wondering if anyone cares to elaborate on their typical day, pros and cons of their specific job. I know every situation varies but do PTAs get treated as a valuable part of the therapy team? Anyone have experience working under the supervision of a PT who was difficult/possibly condescending or unappreciative? I know that respect is earned alot of times and you will need to prove your skills but what other specific cons could there be?

Like you said, it depends on where you work, when it comes to respect and responsibility. At my job, our program manager at the SNF i work at take our judgment and recommendations and never once has questioned it. He'll ask me what i think about a patients rehab potential and when they'll be d/c etc etc. He respects everyones opinion. So from my own personal experiences here in the USA, i can say its pretty okay. That being said, i also worked as a PTA in canada for a year and that was a totally different story. However, i think that is because the PTA profession has been recognized in the USA for much longer than it has in Canada. Right after i graduated from my program i got offered a job at a local hospital. I was treated like garbage compared to how im treated now. In canada i was "just" a PTA.. here in the states im a PTA. I dont know if that makes sense to you or not. lol |

Thanks for your response. I figured how you get treated as a PTA would really depend where you work/fellow co-workers etc. I am just wanting to get as much info as I can to know if this is really going to be something that I enjoy. I observed at 3 different places and one-an outpaitient place I loveed. The inpatient hospital setting I wasn't as thrilled with but I really think it was the person I was shadowing and not so much the job itself. Initially I could see myself enjoying a small outpatient clinic. Any othr input or experiences that someone wants to share would be interesting to read.
