Hi to all the PT/PTA, I am so happy that I stumble on this blog it was a miracle from god. I felt like i was the only one facing this terrible challenge. I too allowed time to pass without taking the national exam for one reason or another. Now I am face with the challenge of having to take NPTAE. I feel like am in a big pickle.. I am in a similar situations to some of you out there. I am a licensed PTA in the state of new york, I've been practicing since i graduated back in 99,great job, excellent salary, but like everything else the economy has affected all of us. Company folded, lost of job.. Recently move to New Jersey. I felt that i wanted to be closer to my family, not knowing the trials/tribulations that I would be facing, but it gives me great comfort knowing that i am not alone.. I've been such a procastinator for the past few months. I haven't done much studying. i find it difficult to consentrate and I beging to do other things, as well I continue to search for jobs that are closer to new jersey.. I did purchase the scorebuildr PTA Exam by Giles, also search for PTA refresher courses; found one online for eight wks, but unfortunetly the course was full and it began three weeks ago. the next one is oct.. therapy.com offers a refresher course which it begings in june. So i will have to buckle up ,stop procastinating and and beging to sudy, study.. Thanks to all... Good luck to all those who will be taking the exam soon.. My prayers are with you. i don't have to know your name for he does.. God bless! Remember he promises that we won't be alone.. God is always good.. he is a good god.. In response to your question, and I do not know if they do this in your state, but they send your scores and a break down of how you did in each area. I reviewed that and found that I was really bad in one area and I did good in the others. Review your test report, find out what areas you need work in, work on those and focus heavily on interventions, modalities, musculoskeletal and the neuro. Hopefully this will help you and wish me luck To all that's looking for a PTA exam refresher course Lake Superior College has a 8 weeks online course for new grad or students who been out of the field the one for March started 2 weeks ago the next course scheduled for October 2010. Hi Debbie, have you taken the exam yet or are you still reviewing. i graduated 11 years ago this may and never took the NPTAE. move to nj 4 months ago and need to take the exam; looking for a study partner... thanks gladys leesmom3 in Union City, Tennessee said: I graduated from PTA school 10 years ago this past May. During my last year of college I had my first son, thus graduating when he was 2 weeks old. I have never practiced in the field, nor taken my exam. Now that my youngest of 4 is starting school I want to try and pursue my license. I feel an incompleteness that I never finished and really want this. I don't have a clue where to begin and am looking for any advice. I know so many things have changed over the years and I almost feel as if I am chasing a lost dream. |

I have seen that there are some review courses for the exam online. Maybe that could be an option. I'm sure it will be tough after having been out for so long. Did you know the exam is the same test that a PT must pass, minus a 50 question section on something we dont need to know. Thats a tough exam anyway you cut it. I'll be taking mine in about 9 mos. Scares the heck out of me to be quite honest. I'm still in school and am all A's up till this semester. Kinesiology! Yikes! If I pull off an A I will be surprised. My brain is mush some times as the amount of material is huge, and difficult to comprehend. I heard they may make PTA a BA program soon. Anyone here that? |

Tom in Nashville, TN 26 months ago |
I haven't heard about schools making PTA programs a BA. That would mean extending the programs to 4 years, right? Most of the people I know went thru 2 year programs, and the amount of info thrown at us in 1 year was ungodly! Could be interesting! Don't know about on-line review courses, would like to find a study partner locally, think it would help me stay on track better. Did do a review course by Scorebuilders in February, and that was a good indicator of what I had forgotten! Must press on though, follow the plan! |

I did hear about an online review course here on this forum actually. Somebody was trying to get in on it but it was full. I'll bet one would be very helpful. If you google PTA exam review courses you'll probably find one. |

The BA for pta might be 4 years. At CU in boulder they are considering offering 3 year BAs. Accelerated programs are very popular these days. The respiratory students at my school were told they will have to go back for a BA at some point to continue to work when the BA requirement comes into fruition to be licensed. Needless to say, I did not choose that program of study. Theres a "grandfathering in" and cut off dates too. I know of a PTA whos state just turned "official" as far as licensing goes. Shes been a pta for 13 years and has to take the boards to continue working. She missed the grandfathering thing by only a few months they said. Bummer huh? |

I did research a couple refresher course on-line and most of them are 25% through the course. i did find one that beging in june... I did hear the PT/PTA exam are similar - the 50 questions..Kines is steep but you will get through it, we all did and you will get that A... And yes they should make the PTA program a 4 year curriculum there is too much material to cover in 2 years and they keep adding.. Good Luck completing the program. Once you are lincensed and working is very rewarding... God bless Gladys |

I am a foreign graduate PT and recently took the PTA exam. I decided to take the PTA exam because i have taken the NPTE 2x and did not make it with loosing few points to passing. I've seen the PT exam and i compared it with the PTA exam and there's not much of difference except for the research part. Frankly, I find the PTA exam to be hard. I studied the same way as i did with my PT exam, to those taking the exam study very wisely and stick to the materials your using and understand them. They ask very tricky questions, good luck to all. |

Then, a 2 year MS program and now a 3 year "Doctor" program with a 4 year whatever degree and waste of time. New Zealand and Australia, Doctors have a Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery or Dentistry in 5-6 years. PT is a 4 year BS. |

DebDeb in Keller, Texas said: I studied the Giles PTA review guide new in 2009. It's important to know what kind of "studier" you are and what really works for you. I need to hear it, see it, write it. I got artist sketch pads and made larger than normal lists and outlines of each subject section in multiple colors to keep it interesting. Bought a skeleton from Wal-Mart at Halloween and made muscles for it. I quizzed myself on a dry erase board. Made my own quizzes and flashcards on quizlet.com. Also would recommend purchasing the PEAT exams, Helped to figure out how the questions would be asked. Don't believe I would have passed if I had not taken it, although I didn't take them until 2 days before I took the exam. I would recommend doing this a bit earlier. I took about a month and did not work much. I studied for about 8 hours a day for at least the last 2 weeks. Was not going to do it again! Basically just reviewed repeatedly until I knew it. Be creative and make it fun. Hope this helps a bit. Good Luck to you! Congrates for passing the exam.I am planning to take the exam so just wondering do you have your course material(books, flashcards) and would u like to sell it.Please let me know |

I was in the same situation. I had been away from the field for about six years and wished to return. Luckily, I worked in a hospital, so I was able to hang around the PT department and that helped me get a feel for the gym again. I asked them a great deal of questions, which usually led to discussions on topics that were very helpful. The biggest thing I did was VOLUNTEER at the the hospital's Physical therapy department. This gave me a better idea of what it was like to be in the gym again. I became more familiar with the settings and some things came back to me. I read some of my old books (kisner and patient care skills are very good) because some of the procedures did not change. Shortly after, I created my resume, which included my current volunteer experience, internships and my job six years ago, I took a perdiem job on saturdays because it was not that crazy and I could go and learn sort of at a slower pace than if I worked five days a week. slowly but surely, I got the feel again and I included my per diem job on my resume and that landed me a nine to five in a good learning environment. I am working, an ongoing contract positon (staff pay is lower) and I am still at my first per diem job, both for a little more than a year and I am still learning, because whatever I read, I try to apply to my caseload, which I think is important for me before I take the test because it gives me a better understanding of what I am learning and doing. I took the test to fast and failed by 14 points. So my advice is take your time, learn and read as much as you can and ask questions. It is also very hard to support yourself ( I live alone ) and study at the same time. I would love to dedicate 3-5 hours a day to study, but the economy just will not let that happen. So I am taking in as much as I can as focusing on the basics. Before I test again. I hope this helps and good luck |

Just passed the exam with over 100 pts over the minimum. I made questions for the Gile's book. Now, I'm selling the materials. I have Giles 2007 PTA Review w/CD ($69 on Amazon) and have typed questions for the majority of the book. I also have in like-new condition Tenpenny w/CD ($100 on Amazon), Fortinberry ($35 on Amazon), and Meyers 2000 w/disk, Volume 1 of 2 ($10-20). I'll sell you the works for $200 with my typed practice questions. trvlabrd@excite.com |
