Hello, I am researching the PTA field as a new career path. I am a stay at home Mom of twin 2 year olds and I have a B.S in Psychology. I worked in corporate training (banking) for 12 years and it required a lot of travel. Having a family at home I do not want to travel and love helping others. I was wondering once you complete schooling and become certified what are the general hours of a PTA? I realize there are different fields within it but do most PTAs work 8-5 M-F? Is there evening hours? Also is it possible to work in the field part time? If you are in home healthcare can you arrange your schedule as needed as long as you fit in your patients during the day? Any advice or help regarding this would help me better understand...thanks very much.

It depends on the needs of the area you are working in. I do pt for the military and i work from 10-8 M-th w/ friday off. The facility I previously worked in my hours were 7-3:30 mon-fri.

Being a PTA is an amazing, rewarding career. There is always something new facing a person each day. I have worked in a hospital and also outpatient care. Hospital hours were 8-4:30, and o/p was 3 days at 7:30-4:30 and 2 days 9-6. Also, there are part-time hours and PRN positions. I have found the hours and the employers to be very flexible and very family oriented. During my schooling I had a 7-wk. rotation in home health. The PTA who was my CI (Clinical Instructor) certainly had freedom in scheduling and traveling that made her days very manageable, if you get my drift.
