Hi I just found this board and it is awesome! I am getting ready to apply yo PA school next year and I just had a conversation with a family friend whom is a EMT. He swore to me that I really should be shadowing doctors and not physician assistants. His explanation is that since a PA works under a doc shadowing one with the purpose of getting a referral for PA school is better. This sound fishy to me as I can understand shadowing a doc to make sure it is not what you want to do but the referral thing seems wrong. Tell me what you think. by the way I am currently a Rehabilitation aide at a children's hospital with direct patient care experience and a good gpa. What other advice do you have for me. Thanks! |

What comes to mind is: LOL. I agree with you. I think you would be happier shadowing a PA to better understand their role in healthcare. As far as the letter, some schools require a letter from a doctor-OR-physician assistant, never just a doctor… and I believe that it is WHAT the letter says rather than WHO wrote it. Maybe your friend is a “status-junkie†(I don’t mean that to knock your friend-just trying to crack a joke).

I just applied to PA school and Interviewed at a school i really wanted to attend. They did not reject me, but they did tell me that i would be placed on a waitlist because i have not SHADOWED a PA. Even though I have been a MA in a clinic for a year and worked with PA's daily! I have shadowed a million doctors, and it doesn't count!!!!! they want you to shadow a PA not a doc |

I'm having a hard time finding a PA that will allow me to shadow because of the privacy laws. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could go in UTAH? Also, I've done a little community service and I'm a phlebotomist. Should I be doing more? |

Rafi in Forest Hills, New York said: where can i shadow?????? Try going to hospitals or start volunteering and most likely you will see PA during morning rounds. Try to talk it out with them, they will be more than happy to let you shadow. Good luck |
