I wanted to know if it is possible to take a semester off from PA school for urgent reasons? Or be able to take a few days off in a semester for a special urgent reason and show proof of why you need to take time off?

Would you guys care to share your experience of what you disliked there? It would be helpful. I know two people who have graduated from the program and they said it was fine overall and had no complaints. I would still like to hear other comments. |

ok but can someone still tell me if it is possible to take time off for any given reason? I know it is possible to take time off other graduate programs. |

I do know a couple of people who have taken time off during PA school, but it was for extenuating circumstances. I mean EXTENUATING- like disabling trauma and cancer or deployment. Not for things like having a baby (other than the usual 6 weeks), time to earn more $, etc. Most PA programs are structured so you complete your didactic studies in a particular order with the rest of your class with courses given once each academic year. For the people I knew who required time off, it was during the didactic portion of training. What they ended up doing was re-joining their studies with the following class, which creates a problem logistically for most programs which are structured for an exact number of students each year. Accomodating an extra student sometimes requires special permission from ARC-PA, and re-arranging lab space, clinical rotations (if they are limited in your area, etc. CAN it be done? Yes, sometimes. Will it be POSSIBLE for you? Depends on your circumstances and the program you attend. If you are going into it thinking that you will want to take a break, now is probably not the time to start. If you foresee circumstances arising possibly in the future that would make it unavoidable, then I would say go for it and cross that bridge when you come to it. Just be sure you will be absolutely dedicated to returning. The amount of finances, time and resolve invested initially is not worth the sacrifice if you are not absolutely dedicated to finishing. I have been a PA for 12 years and could not do anything else. It is totally worth the stress that training can create in your life if you go into it with realistic expectations. |
