I'm interested in shadowing a couple of the local Physician Assistants in my area and wondered what the general "rules" were. When you request to shadow someone, what sort of time commitment did you ask for? (In other words, did you set up a schedule where you came into the office once a week for a month, two months, or never set an end date, etc.) Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Well most programs that I have seen want at least 40 hours total. With that said, I think its a great idea (and looks good) if you shadow a PA in different specialties (maybe just the ones you are interested in and/or one for each rotation you may do FP, IM, EM, Peds, OB etc). I plan to shadow those that coincide with my rotations and I would like to spend a month with each one....1-2 days a week from 9a-1p. I figured this would give me a chance to experience different settings, see slow and fast days and build a "relationship" with the PA because you will also need reference letters when you apply and its best if they are from PAs |
