Number one and most important is to become the best welder you know including everyone that has ever met you or meets you. A great welder can perform in any position and every process. I dont feel you can call yourself a welder if theres only certain jobs you can take because you cant perform certain processes. If your young and looking into this career take it for what its worth learn as much as you can in the trade let it lead you to better opportunties in life. I started my career as an 18 year old picking ciggerete butts up on my first industrial job. At age 20 I brought home my first weekly paycheck valued at 3,500. That makes a person feel confident, which is key to success.

some of that is true, the best thing to learn is know the basics of welding, a steady hand, and and learn everything you can from someone willing to teach you. dont take on any bad habits from people who are insecure about there job they just want to be-little you so they look better. you do need to be confident about yourself and your work, if your employer thinks you cant do something they arnt gonna let you. but you do need to learn how to weld in all positions with any rod. the most important part of a pipe weld is your root pass, then your hot pass, everything else just covers those up to make it (pretty)!!!!

U really need to be able towalk the cup on the pipe or free hand it all the way around, with big gaps ,tight gaps, no gaps,in tight positions & with both hands, here is 1 key to sucsesfully doing that ur fitup is critical,& heat & travel speed ,being consistent @ all times ,if the pipe gets to hot back away from it & let it cool down before firing up on it again & rule # 1 whentig welding make sure u allways have a sharp tungsten, this helps tremendously

Question? When running your 6010 root on pipe with a 7018 fill and cap should I run a 6010 hot pass or a 7018. Why or why not. I'm new and would like some input from you guys with some experance under your belt.

thats crap you dont have to know how to weld anything and everythin to be a good welder, i can weld many different ferris metals with tig and stick but crome hasent ever been my most beautiful welds, and iv been very succesful in my carrier, so dont let somebody tell you that just because you cant weld a certain metal dosent mean you cant weld cause you can learn it just takes patients and practice you cant learn this stuff overnight! so do what you all you can do to your best ability and youll be just fine, if they dont like it screw em!!!!

1) No two welders weld exactly alike. You could have the #1 Welder trying to teach you something the way he "does it". It may not work for you. The more time under the hood.... the better you get.
2) You can't master it in a hurry. When you get frustrated --- put the hood down, turn the machine off and walk away from it. You might have to be away for 10 minutes or it may take a week or longer.
3) You are your biggest critic and enemy. If you "got what it takes" .... You will NEVER turn out the perfect weld. There is ALWAYS something that could be improved. Just cause the QC buys it don't mean it's "perfect". Strive for perfection, for yourself.

perfection is great to strive for when your in a pipeshop, use of trestles, overhead crane, but on site working in tight corners,
perfection can be near impossible to achieve,as long as you are happy the pipe weld would pass an x-ray then no worries pal.
