I have worked really hard, graduated from welding school and can learn very fast, but it seems that if I want to get a welding job that pays a good wage, I would have to lie about my experiance. I was an honest person before i started welding and I would like to stay that way.

Did you join the boilermakers union? I did the same thing and they never would send me to work. I ended up going non union to goto work. Now, I can't find work because I don't have experiance. I just want a chance.

You have to go where the work is, start at the bottom and work up get the experiance makeing small money and get a reputation. and there is work out there oil field, shipyards, local metal fab and such you just have to do the foot work and find where its at dont wait for call backs in tough times any work is worth your time im sue we all have what it takes to do any job but we also have familys to feed and baby shoes to buy

in my opinion you don't want to blow the keyhole before you get to burn the rod...don't lie...they find out sooner or later, then that's when the calls never come again...

Agree don't lie if they have an opening as a fitters helper just get in the door! you better be ready when it time to test practice at work at home, because your going to have to prove to Q.C that you know what your doing.you screw it up ITS OVER! just because you can melt wire and drive two miles to work don't make you a journeyman welder!!!its kinda like this i was told a average welded joint to weld in a refinery from getting the pipe off the truck to final installation cost $5.0000.00 a joint WHY WOULD YOU ALLOW A NOVICE TO WELD THAT. YOU SCREW IT UP THE BOSS WILL BE PISSED OFF AT ALL THE PEOPLE INVOLVED.

WELDING IS LIKE KARATE:When you first go to welding school you learn the trade every test in school would be like getting a differnt color belt. When you graduate you get your black belt you think your bad. then when you get out in the real world and see how things really are you then learn you have 10 degree's of a black belt to learn.I'VE been welding on and off for over 25 years.I would say i'm a 7th degree. IF YOU THINK YOU CAN LIE TO A OLD HAND THAT'S BEEN AROUND YOUR GOING TO GIVE HIM SOMTHING TO LAUGH AT!!!!BECUZ I CAN TELL IF YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR DAD, WENT TO SCHOOL OR IF YOUR A MILLWRIGHT MASQURADING AS A PIPEFITTER!!!

hte reason the wages have gone down for a trade that is rare is because th mexican are coming in and lowering the wages. this will continue to happen as long as you are doing a job that they can do just as good and w/ no complaints. the answer is save as much as you can to buy a truck and machine to work for yourself and find a rig or pipeline company to work for. if you have your certs. and can pass a test "they will hire you"

Totally not true! I have everything you listed and havent been called out or called back! no one will give me a chance! I have the experiance in the welding pipe and structural in the plants wich are more critical than oil feild work and i recently was a welding director for a vocational school and i tell them that and it just rolls in one ear and out another...sorry if i sounded rude but ive been frustraded getting all this negative feed back...
