Are jobs in this industry on the rise? Are there any sub-sectors that are growing? Where are the jobs? Which places have the most pipe welder opportunities? |

Send your e-mail address to r51d@yahoo.com, and I'll give you the ph.no. of a 798 welding foreman, but here are some more to contact. Troy Pipeline, www.troyconstruction.com 281-437-8214. Bay Const. Alecia, 989-631-4600 Amelia La., ask for the number for the Deer Park Tx. office, or she might have something going somewhere else, the deer park office has a line that is going to start out of Mt. Belview tx.soon. R&R Pipeline Fayetteville Ar.918-546-2880 or 479-452-0331. Triad Western Const.Albequerque N.M.505-345-2975.Taylor Pipeline Dayton Tx.936-258-3860. Thats a start for you, but if you have started welding already, have a rig, and want to work pipeline, I would suggest hunting pumping or compressor sta. work first. Usually the test is one 6-G, instead of the harder branch tests, and you'll be making the money, and getting better at welding at the same time. There are flow lines and gathering lines going in around Buffalo Tx. right now that you might be able to chase down the contractors and get to work on. If I can help more, let me know what you need! |

Station work is a good way to get started, the pipeline barges offshore used to be, but there aren't that many anymore. Barge work generally pays less, but there aren't any expenses. You get to make 3or4 times the welds in a day, under a little better conditions, but it can be a little brutal at times. Chet Morrison Contractors in Houma is one of the few good ones to work for left. All they want is for someone hiring in to be a hand. You'll have to look up the number, I can't find it right now. The thing to do would be to work a job with them or someone similar, and as soon as you get back onshore, and while your hand is hot, hit the pipeline companies. Troy-288@McHard Rd. Houston, 281-437-8214. Tanner, I-10 Baytown713-679-1747,Bay Ltd. on Center Street, Deer Park has a line starting next month out of Mt. Belview.Driver pipeline, I would have to look up. What matters most is a rolodex of phone contacts you build up over time,(My ex tossed mine in the garbage) I am just getting those kind of numbers back. And don't be afraid to share numbers with other rig hands. If you're any good, you don't have to be afraid of YOUR job. It seem too many these days won't share the numbers, names, or any other info, and that is what keeps everyone working, the network. Flint Energy is another one, and they are nationwide. Flint-Tulsa Ok.918-294-3030. Hope this helps. |

i was trying to find out how i could get an apprentice job with the 798 welders union. I m currently going to trade school to be a welder but i have not completed my training yet and i need to go to work. Im 21 years old and i have family working on diffrent pipelines all over the U.S. but i cant seem to find out how to get a book. If anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it because i plan on making a career out of this and the faster i can get started the better. |

Rick in Sutherland Springs, Texas 50 months ago |
798 is a hard local to get into. Not that it is any better than any other, its just that most apprenticeships are granted by referal from existing members, either because someone hired out as a helper to one of the welders, or they are related to an existing member. Find out where union lines are going in, and ask to talk to the Steward, and tell him what you want. If they are shorthanded there is a chance to get to know some of the welders, the steward, and others that might help. In any case, they can give you some information at least. Or, probably the fastest way would be to contact Local 798 in Tulsa Oklahoma, and ask to talk to a Business Agent. |

I have been welding since 1994. I started in Shop while in high school, then went on to trade school after I graduated high school in 93. I had to wait till I turned 18 in 94 to get a welding job. Since then I have welded many types of metal. Over the years I learned to fit and read prints as well. 3 years ago, I was able to start my own LLC. I began to work on the levy systems for New Orleans. I then had bridge Projesct I helped as a sub contractor. Now here in Louisiana, work has been slow. I am looking to travel out side La for work I want to head west. I will travel as far as Az. for a oil gas pipeline. Thanks for any help I may receive. |

I am finally trying to get a rig together to start working pipelines. I have the truck but am trying to determine the best weld machine for the job. Though I know that a diesel would be best it's price is not possible at this time so I will be getting a gas welder at this time. I am still interested in the opinions of the best machines for the job (gas or diesel), brand, and amperage needed. Thanks for the help. My wife has more time to research prices on the internet than I do, so what you recommend is what she will be researching. |

Canuk.....I understand the sentiment, but I believe the people on here are just not being specific about their feelings on the ILLIGAL workers (no matter the nationality) that are taking the jobs in their areas. Most countries require that workers from out of country be sponsored and that the worker that is being hired and brought into the country IS NOT TAKING A JOB AWAY FROM A WORKER that is already in the country. Doesn't seem to be the way here in the U.S. and it doesn't help with the safety of the job site that these foreign workers won't or can't speak English. |

Ive been in construction since I was a kid, 6 years ago I got into structural welding and pipe welding and now I want to start on my own rig welder, im just not to sure where to start. I want to rig a 1500 4x4 gmc pick up. I know its alot of weight to haul. I want to use it only until im able to afford a more suffitiant working truck. Would I need air bags or tougher springs, or would it hod out on the original suspesion for a few months. Besides the equipment, business licence and the insurance what else would I need. For all you experienced rig welders, I could really use your help out there.....thanx! |

Dude I've seen some dodge dakota pickups with ranger 305 lincoln/ 302 trialblaser miller as welding trucks. Up here in canada alot of guys rig up 2500/3500 short box crew cab trucks. they work fine if you dont have too many tools. Even in 2500/3500 trucks an extra spring or two helps alot. Keep in mind a 1500 size truck can legaly haul about 500 pounds + -.( the weight of a ranger 305g is 570 lbs) |

I have an oppertunity to start as a welder apprinticship with 798 union by way of referal by a member. This is the only lead I've found to get out there. Does anyone have any input about the 798? Good idea should I keep looking? I am not familiar with unions or the way they really work. ANy input would be appriciated. |
