I don't know about GA. Here is the national numbers (from www.police-hiring.com )

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment Statistics Survey, the average annual salary for police and sheriff’s patrol officers was $53,540. This is compared to all other occupations combined which is $44,410 (as of May 2010).

It is just an average and the numbers will change drastically from rural to urban. We police officers do well overall. Plus it is a steady job w/ few layoff and good benefits. If you are looking for certain cities or counties most of that information is posted on the respective government agencies sites or you can contact the HR dept.
