DISAPPOINTED !

Pat, I am almost the same boat. I'm heading toward retirment and looking for a position and nothing has developed. I have been putting in resumes and applications from Oct. 07 to Jan.08. I refused to submit any more applications after January so here I sit wondering what my next move should be. I found a job,perfectly fits my background, was rejected but it's re-opened. So do I re-submit or not? Good luck and hang in there.

Hey, don't feel that bad. I have been looking for a job for 11 months as of yesterday and have applied to at least 65 places either on line or at least 25 face to face interviews.
The last one really frustrated me. I was TOTALLY qualified because I have transcription experience which is what they are looking for. The manager told me it came down to me and one other person. They chose the other person because she was "already in the company and they knew her..." Well how about giving someone else a job?
So, don't feel bad. These companies don't know what they are missing.
We shall move on and take each day as it comes. As long as we are still breathing, have a roof over our heads, have family who will help up, we will survive!

Boy, I thought I was being mistreated. That is deplorable. The only job I got offered after being an Admin. Asst. for 10 years and a legal secretary for 8 years and after searching for 10 months was for a customer service rep. job, $8.00 an hour and the place was disgusting to work in. I was the oldest person in the place. I took it, but only lasted six days and I'm sure you know why. I will not degrade myself that low after all my years of experience.

Take care and as many people have said to me and I STILL believe it, things will work out in the end (they always do) and something good is coming your way soon.

I like thinking positive. It makes me feel great and then more positive things happen. You should try it!!!!!!!!! Things could always be worse.

Ok, so age discrimination does happen, but some of the problem may NOT be age. Some of it could be your attitude. If you're going in there with a defensive mindset, or prejudicial against younger people that might also work against you. Plus having a negative or bitter attitude ages you more. Like it or not, employers want a happy, youthful mindset. You don't have to be 21 to have that. I'm 47 and I have it...because I work at it.

Some ideas:

Have any of you considered revamping your image? Think about coloring your hair if it's going gray or getting a new style if you've won the same one for 20 years? If you wear glasses, consider contacts or younger looking lenses? Maybe you could lose some weight or at least start exercising more to firm up what you got. If you can afford it, and have no problem with it, consider getting Botox. Get your teeth whitened...nothing shows age faster than teeth. Look at your wardrobe...does it look "old" or "dowdy?" What about bringing it up to date? Try the book How not to look old and that may give you some good ideas...or find an image consultant at a local department store to help you pick out flattering but more youthful looking work clothes.

Maybe you can revamp the resume to play down the years, but play up the experience...use a functional resume instead. Demonstrate to a potential employer you're computer savvy and are energetic...

and most importantly, DON'T GIVE UP. Best of luck to everyone here.

p.s. I work for a company where 2/3 of the employees got hired after age 40...so I KNOW it can be done.

yeah, instant answer: Botox in a form of boosting up your self-esteem. I am 100% natural and I love every wrinkle. Age is not important if you're applying for the right job ad if employer wants you to work there. Of course, decent grooming won't hurt anyone.

It is all about strategy and having self-confidence in yourself. Being overqualified can be a burden (sometimes), but any good recruiter will recognize the true values in potential employee. No matter black circles around the eyes, or non-symmetric eyes.
If understand you want to be paid commensurate with your expertize, in that case talk to your boss, communicate the issue, if it's not working - look for another job.

I agree with you totally. I have been asking far less than what I am worth and still cannot get the job. My problem is not that they see how old I am by my social security number, but by my hands, which have done tons of typing over the years and they look like the hands of an older woman. This was my life'work for many years. Also, I have a disability from birth and walk with a cane. I have no pain and can do the job with no problem at all. I still have my experience and everything else it takes to do a good job. Who will hire someone who they think will fall on the job or have problems down the road?
Another point brought up to me by my very wise brother who is an attorney is that what employer wants to hire someone who they think will retire in two or three years. I don't WANT to retire, I WANT TO WORK and can work, God willing for another twenty years.

and you've come to this conclusion how? Did you do research and observe 90% of the "young" workers in the world's population. If you want a raise, then you need to tell your supervisor why you deserve one. You can't just sit back and expect to get a raise without showing why. and the best thing to do is to ignore the gossip going on at work, do the best job that you can, and stop stereotyping the younger generation. I don't see how my comment is absurd, I said it right you are backstabbing. Just because you post it on indeed.com does not mean that you were woman enough to say it to your coworker's face. Honestly, if I felt a coworker was slacking off, I would let them know in a respectful manner. I don't beleive in acting childish and coming to the conclusion that a person acts a certain way because of their age. You know I am right because you feel you have to justify your behavior by stating that "younger workers can read it on here". Yes, it's a free country and everyone is entitled to their own opinions, however, some opinions are just way too stupid to ignore. Poor Narai. I'm with ya, though you should not have swallowed the bait. These flame wars (do they still call it "flaming"?) so easily break out when the world view is restricted to the computer screen. I'm guilty of it myself; getting so emotionally involved with proving my point that I forget to consider alternative points of view.
I have found it instructive to talk, face-to-face, with other people who have gone through a similar, but much more poignant, experience regarding equal employment opportunity, fair wages and respect in the workplace, specifically African-American men and women who continue to struggle to banish the foolishness of discrimination forever to the ash heap of history.
To distill my understanding, the first small steps were achieved not by complaining about it but by doing something about it.
"Doing something" involved uniting across small differences and forming a larger, nationwide, demand for justice. Justice was not achieved by those in Watts claiming they had been more grievously wronged than those in Mobile, it was advanced slowly through clear and constant demands that our government enforce the laws already on the books.
This talk of gossip and backstabbing does not dignify the question of what is to be done about true and verifiable age discrimination in the United States and I would urge you who have personal issues here to take a moment and try to seek a solution for our nation as a whole. Otherwise, the status quo wins internecine atrition.

Patricia, Most of us sitting around here on the computer are looking for jobs. We do not sit here to gather information like some of the others do. We vent, we read what others are going through. If Displaced is upset over whatever, he has the right to say whatever (within the boundaries of Indeed's guidelines). I for one will not sell insurance of any kind. No work is great. I do this part time and it is NOT insurance!!! You need to get your facts straight. I usually do not say anything on this forum becuase I have been reading lately without saying anything at all and some of you people are some of the most cruel or unhappiest folks I have ever seen. In fact, I feel sorry for allot of you and the ones you blast. But...when I do make a comment, I usually end up helping somone out there so I will take the insults to help one. I agree with all of you ... I am in the 50 some range of age and I still have the skills. I have been hired for some jobs in the past but, for some reason they did not work out. But, sometimes when you go on some on these interviews they waist your time interviewing you knowing that they want someone younger. And sometimes it depends on the company -I have found out that some companies prefer the more "mature or seasoned" employees because: "we have the knack, know-how, finesse, class, skllls, and get to work on time type of additude and not talking on the their cell phones or wearing jeans or seductive attire in a professional setting type of employee." I have started seeking out websites that cater to "us" so to speak, one is RetiredBrains.com, SeniorJobBank.com, AARP, Walmart, Giant, Safeway. Stores such as these do not discriminate. What I do is submit my resume not knowing what age they want or care and if called walk in their with all my qualities that I always had even when I was in 20 thru 45yrs. and hope for the best, sometimes you never know.

Hannie, sorry I didn't realize it was a travel site. My friend did that and there was no income from it other then a few friends and family members. She even made a pitch at work and everyone got turned off by her. She tried to push the same website on co-workers and it nearly cost her her job because everyone got fed up with it. It cost her more money for the fees that the company charages for their website but you are the "owner". I hope you do better.

The company is still great.....they can not help what the legislators do in S.C. I would still be with them making good money like the rest of the US and my good friends....some of the folks moved . If you want to say the joke is on me....so be it....doesn't bother me. I've had a great time helping lots of folks with their health care ( and will still stay with the company to do that end of the business) that can not afford insurance and it is not by all means a scam or the company would not be in business for 16 years nor the #1 health care benefits company in the nations.....where do you get your information since you "think" you are so smart??? All, quite frankly, some of you sound like bitter, self-pitying people that most employers would avoid hiring at all costs. Check your attitude. It might be contributing more to your employment dilemma than you think.

I'm an employer and small business owner who would love to hire a mature and experienced worker if I could afford the salary. I look for people who are enthusiastic, open to new ideas, not locked into old approaches, eager to learn, and eager to achieve. That's not age-specific. I've run into recent college grads who think they know it all, and I've hired older workers who think my flexibility means they can take advantage of early retirement while on salary. And on the other side, I've had older workers who made fantastic employees and young grads who worked hard and earned promotions. It's not age. It's attitude, experience, willingness to learn. Also, it's about COST. Some businesses simply can't afford the kind of salaries older, experienced workers demand.

Some people do not realize what we "oldies" face each day when it comes to interviews. BEEN GOING THROUGH THE SAME THING AND I'M NOT RETIRED. I'M 57 YEARS OLD AND HAVE APPLIED FOR AT LEAST 200 JOBS AND NO RESPONSE. THEY GO AFTER THE YOUNGER PEOPLE TODAY. WE WORK JUST AS HARD IF NOT HARDER. HAVE NO JOB AND THEY DON'T CARE

I have to stop reading here on page 2 because I am laughing so hard at what I am reading that I don't have the patience to keep reading to the last page in order to finally comment. I'm reading about having positive thinking versus negative thinking. Heck, 'wishful' thinking worked for me! LOL Seriously, my sister has been looking for a job since October 2007. Each time she fills out an application or sends in a resume she will call me up and say that she thinks that this job will finally be "the one". When it doesn't pan out the way she thought then she says that it wasn't meant to be and that soon a job will come her way that is meant just for her. I on the other hand seem to be a little bit of a pessimist and recently had begun looking for a job for myself. I sent out 3 resumes and 2 contacted me for an interview. After the first interview for both companies they both called me within hours of each other wanting a second interview. After going for the second interviews for both companies they both called 2 days later within 1/2 hour of each other saying they would like to hire me. I did however, come away with the feeling that I was going to get the job, for both jobs. No more than 10 minutes had passed when I said to my sister that I wish I would get a call first for the job I really wanted before the other one calls because I was going to say yes to the first one that called me back. And my wishful thinking worked, lol. The job that I wanted the most called me first with the good news...within the next half hour the other job called and I had to turn them down. So, sad to say my sister is still looking for a job after 9 months yet staying positive about it. I didn't think I was going to get a job this quickly quite frankly because it seemed everything was going wrong for me lately and I was preparing myself for a long wait. I guess I have a lot of wishful thinking to do on behalf of my sister!
