I'm a little worried about something. I have a Bachelor's in Biology.
I'm almost set to start a program that would certify me as a Medical Lab Technician here in Illinois.

However, I've been searching and looking at job postings at hospitals. It seems that they all want is a Bachelor in biology and certification as a Med. Lab. Technologist (MT), it doesn't say anything about a Med. Lab Technician (MLT).
So, I'm worried.

It seems to be a trend, I contacted an MT and she said there is not a great demand for MLTs, they only have a few in her hospital.
It seems to be the demand is for MTs.

I just wanted to get things going and that is why I decided to take a MLT program at a community college.
I know MTs also make more money than MLTs but I didn't want to post-pone things any longer. I also know that I can get certified as an MT after a couple years of working as a MLT in the labs.
However, now I'm not so sure, I see postings for MTs, but not MLTs.
So how can I get the experience if there are no MLT postings?

I hope I can get advice and hopefully there are technicians out there who did get employed.
I think I might have to speak with the Evanston director again. They have an MT program, but I'll have to start next year.

Hello,

I am i the same position, I am getting my MT. Here in baltimore MT are in demand and theyhave certificate programs for people who have a biology degree already, in maryland it would take the same amount of time to get a MLT and a MT. MT gets paid way more money, I think for you to get a MLT would be a step down, but if you want to get your step in the door, MLT would be a good way for experience but I think a waste of money.

Hi Tasha,

Can you provide a bit more information on the certificate programs that you mentioned?

Thank you!

I think it's a regional thing. I used to work in a hospital in LA that didn't even hire MLTs - just lab assistants and MTs (and microbiologists, virologists, etc). But where I am now, they hire MLTs.
